EHS boys basketball clinches tourney berth
The Everett High boys basketball team punched its ticket for a Journey to the Tourney with a 57-50 victory at Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Medford last Tuesday.
The triumph improved coach Gerard Boyce and his crew’s record to 11-7, thereby assuring the Crimson Tide of the .500 record that is needed to qualify for the MIAA Division 1 state tournament.
Everett’s winning effort was fueled by a dominant offensive display from Cristian Vasquez, who led all scorers with 26 points, and Samir King-Dacosta, who contributed a crucial 14 points.
“This was the second game of a back-to-back and our boys showed incredible stamina and mental toughness to secure a victory on the road,” said Boyce. “This win marked our 10th victory in the last 12 games, giving us significant momentum as we head into the final stretch of the season. I’m extremely proud of my boys.”
The Tide carried that momentum into their next contest two nights later at home with GBL foe Revere in which Everett cruised to a 79-41 victory over the Patriots.
“We picked up a 79-41 win over Revere, but to be honest, it wasn’t our best showing,” said Boyce. “We were not very good on the defensive end for a large stretch of the game and we still have plenty of work to do.
“For us to be competitive moving forward, we have to play with much more intensity on that side of the ball,” Boyce continued. “Fortunately, our defense pulled us out in the second half. The guys finally found that intensity when it mattered most, which allowed us to get the stops we needed to pull away. We’re going to get back to basics in practice and make sure we’re bringing that defensive energy for a full four quarters in our next one.”
Last Friday the Tide traveled to Newton South and came up on the short end of a 72-62 decision. King-DaCosta topped the Everett scoring column with 20 points, followed by Alsaindor with 15 points and Vasquez with 14.
“We had a tough battle against Newton South,” said Boyce, “and while we didn’t play our best basketball, I was proud to see our guys stay competitive until the very end. The fatigue of playing four games in five days definitely caught up to us, and we were not very good on the defensive end as a result. Despite the tired legs, we still saw some great offensive production from our leaders.
“Even though we struggled to find our usual rhythm as a unit, having three players in double figures shows the grit we have even when the schedule is grueling,” the coach added. “We’re going to use this hard-fought stretch as a learning experience, get some much-needed rest, and get back into the gym to sharpen our defensive rotations before the next one.”
Boyce and his Tide crew, who now stand at 12-8, are scheduled to wrap up their regular season with two challenging contests at non-league opponent Beverly (which is ranked 15th in D-1) this evening (Wednesday) and at Lynn Classical (the 2026 GBL champion that is ranked #4 in D-3), tomorrow (Thursday).
They then will await word of their final seeding and first-round opponent in the D-1 state tourney.

EHS girls defeat Revere
The Everett High girls basketball team earned one of its most-satisfying victories of the season with a 47-31 triumph over Greater Boston League rival Revere last Thursday.
“This was a nice bounce-back win after our tough loss to Medford,” said RHS head coach Riley Dunn. “It was a great team win.”
Julianna Rivera led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Katerin Landaverde Vazquez reached double figures with 11 points and pulled down six boards.
Ariana Rouse, Landaverde Vazquez, and Martinez all had three assists in the team win.
Two nights earlier on Senior Night, the Lady Crimson Tide dropped a heartbreaker at the buzzer to GBL foe Medford, 52-50.
“We were thankful for a great crowd and a successful Senior Night and Teacher Appreciation Night,” said Dunn, “but unfortunately we lost at the end to a buzzer beater. However, it was one heck of a game.”
Rivera struck for 22 points and pulled down six rebounds. Landaverde Vazquez hit for 12 points and Martinez reached double figures with 10.
“Nicole Damaceno pulled down 15 boards and remains a consistent force for our team,” said Dunn.
The following night the Lady Crimson Tide took on second-place Lynn Classical for their third game in four days and came up on the short end of a 45-33 decision.
“We just ran out of steam at the end,” noted Dunn.
This past Sunday the Tide made the long trek to non-league opponent Haverhill and fell by a score of 56-42.
Landaverde Vazquez had a nice double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“Juniors Kylee Nord and Abigail Falkowski both had great minutes off the bench,” said Dunn. “Both impacted the game immediately with an ‘and-one’ play. We had great minutes from the underclassman who took advantage of every minute on the court.
“Captains Casey Martinez and Nicole Damaceno were relentless on every play. making the extra hustle plays and consistently leading by example, contributing five steals and 14 rebounds together,” Dunn added.
The Lady Crimson Tide are scheduled to wrap up their 2026 season with three home contests this week: Yesterday (Tuesday) vs. Gloucester; today (Wednesday) vs. Classical; and tomorrow (Thursday) vs. North High School. The opening tip for all three is set for 1:00.
