EHS Roundup

EHS baseball stands at 7-6

The Everett High baseball team stands at 7-6 on the season after splitting its last six games.

In a 3-2 victory over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Somerville, starting pitcher Derek Soper tossed a brilliant two-hitter through 6-and-2/3 innings of work in which Derek struck out 12 Highlander opponents. MJ Guida came on in relief to fan a Highlander for the last out.

Everett grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening inning and, after Somerville tied the score in the fourth, the Tide pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth before Somerville rallied for a run in the seventh.

The Tide managed just four hits on the day (by Guida, Jevaun Berberena, Chris O’Neil, and Soper) with O’Neil, Soper, and Albert Santana providing the three RBIs. The Tide left eight runners on base.

In another one-run victory over GBL foe Revere, 5-4, in which the Tide tallied the winning run in the bottom of the seventh (after Revere had scored three runs in the top of the inning to tie the score at 4-4), Guida started and went 4-and-1/3 frames in which he yielded just three hits and an unearned run and fanned five Patriot batters.

Tyler Freni came on to toss the final 2-and-2/3 innings, allowing just one hit with three unearned runs.

Everett managed just three hits on the day, which included a double by Isaiah Goffigan and singles by Freni and O’Neil. Guida, Freni, Nordeivy Santana, Goffigan, and Armani Negron accounted for Everett’s RBIs.

Last Wednesday the Tide came through with a 12-2 win over Chelsea that ended after five innings. Goffigan started and tossed the opening two innings in which Isaiah allowed just one hit and struck out four. Jose Portillo came on for the final three frames, yielding just two hits and no earned runs and fanning four.

Freni wielded the heavy lumber for the Tide (who scored seven runs in the opening inning), going 3-for-3 with two triples, a walk, three RBI, and three runs scored. Reinaldo Santiago had a double and a triple with an RBI. Guida, Berberena, O’Neil, and Charlie Govostes also contributed base hits.

Goffigan, who had a walk and twice was hit by a pitch, scored three runs. Nordeivy Santana

drew two walks and scored two runs.

Also worth mentioning in the Tide’s recent stretch was a fine pitching effort turned in by Soper in a 3-2 loss to Malden in which Derek went all seven innings, allowing just eight hits and two earned runs while striking out eight Golden Tornado batters.

Guida had two hits to pace the six-hit Everett attack, but the Tide left 10 men on base, which proved fatal.

Coach Malik Love and his crew, who need three more wins in their final seven games in order to qualify for the MIAA state tourney, are scheduled to host Lynn English today (Wednesday) at Glendale Park and will trek to Malden on Friday, to Somerville next Monday, and to Revere next Wednesday.

Two big wins for EHS boys volleyball

The Everett High boys volleyball team moved two steps closer to punching their ticket for a

Journey to the Tourney with a pair of victories this past week over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Chelsea and non-league opponent Pioneer Charter School.

The twin wins raise the Crimson Tide’s record to 7-5. Coach Mike Fineran and his crew now need to win three of their final eight matches in order to achieve the .500 record that is necessary to qualify for the post-season state tournament.

Everett almost came away with a third win during the week, falling 15-13 in the fifth set against a strong, experienced Malden team (which is in first place in the GBL) at home last Monday, before beating Chelsea at home 3-0 Wednesday and Pioneer 3-1 on Friday.

“Our record is 7-5, but we will need to continue playing our best to get three more wins to qualify for the state tournament,” said Fineran. “The match against Malden had a tournament-like atmosphere, especially as we mounted a comeback in the first set to win 30-28.”

Junior setter Noel Lopez Ardon served four points in a row, including an ace, to tie the match at 19, and Noel served the final two points of the set, with a second ace setting up game point. The Tide rode that momentum into the second set, where senior captain Henrique Franca caught fire, nailing eight kills along with a block and an ace. Freshman setter Danilo Teixeira Fernandes served six points and an ace to propel Everett to a 25-17 win.

The Crimson Tide had a chance to sweep the match, but missed a serve leading 24-23 in the third set and fell, 26-24. The next two sets were close, powered by Franca’s 22 kills and 10 more from senior captain Bryan Soares Gomes. The third senior captain, Matheus Queiroz, had a monster game, with six blocks and two kills. Junior Matheus Teixeira Fernandes served two points to close the gap to 14-13 in the fifth set tiebreaker, but the Tide’s luck had run out, sending them to their fourth straight defeat.

“We knew we couldn’t afford to lose our fifth match in a row, so we came out determined against Chelsea two days later,” said Fineran regarding his team’s 3-0 shutout of the Red Devils.

Franca — as he has been throughout the season (and for all four years of his EHS career) — was unstoppable. The senior captain had three kills in the opening set, but it was his three aces that helped build leads of 13-4 and 23-16. Senior Caleb Jackson had four kills and a block as Everett cruised to a 25-18 win.

Junior captain Christian Ramirez had three aces and seven service points in the second set. Senior Jefferson Umana had three kills, and Franca had six kills and a block in a 25-21 win. Umana had four kills and a block in set three, Franca had two aces and eight kills, and Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had three aces. Lopez Ardon served the final point of the match, 25-21.

On Friday, Fineran and his crew traveled up Broadway to take on Pioneer, a team hoping to avenge the only loss of its season on their Senior Night.

“We’ve played each other the past four years, and it is always a close, exciting match, and this was no different,” said Fineran. “We were happy to escape with a 3-1 win. Franca had seven kills and a block, but it was a full team effort. “

Umana, Soares Gomes, and junior Victor Rosa all provided key kills to help the Tide take the opening set, 25-18. Five service points in a row from Matheus Teixeira Fernandes opened a 17-11 lead in set two. Queiroz had four kills, two blocks, and an ace, while Franca had eight more kills. Ramirez served the final points in a 25-17 win.

Pioneer built a lead early in the third set and held on to take the set 26-24, despite three kills from senior Donald Vo and six service points from senior setter Sidney Valentim. Umana, Queiroz, and Franca combined for 11 kills and three blocks. That trio had six kills and a pair of blocks in the fourth set, but it was Soares Gomes who led the attack with six kills of his own. His nine service points helped fuel the 25-17 clincher.

The Crimson Tide were scheduled to meet three GBL foes in rematches this week: at Lynn Classical this past Monday; home vs. Lynn English today (Wednesday); and at Revere next Wednesday.

They also will travel to non-league opponent Arlington tomorrow (Thursday).

EHS softball defeats two GBL opponents; qualifies for tourney

The Everett High softball team earned a pair of runaway victories over Greater Boston League opponents Malden and Chelsea last week. The twin wns boosted the Lady Crimson Tide’s record to 10-2, thereby ensuring coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo’s crew of the .500 record that is needed to punch a ticket for a Journey to the Tourney.

In a contest at Malden last Monday, the Lady Crimson Tide rolled to a 32-2 win that was halted after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Mia Allen started the contest in the pitcher’s circle and tossed all five frames, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out six Lady Golden Tornadoes and walking only three.

Everett put the d=game way early, batting around the orde and erupting for 11 runs in the top of the first. Allen helped her own cause with a double and a single. Juliette Romboli struck for a pair of doubles and other key hits came from the bats of Emma Salvi (double), Olivia Dresser (single), Alexa Uga (single), Graziella Foster (single), and Mia Oliva (single).

The Tide upped the count to 17-0 with six more markers in the second thanks in large measure to walks issued by the Malden pitching. Emma Slavi and Luiza Velev both had base hits.

Everett tacked on six more in the third, with Dresser, Romboli, Foster, Oliva, and Velev all delivering base hits.

Malden got two back in its third, but the Tide added to their margin with six more in the fourth. Dresser had two base hits, Salvi struck for a double, and Romboli and Uga had base hits. Everett closed out the game with three runs in the fifth on hits from Foster, Salvi, and Oliva. Allen completed her fine pitching performance with a 1-2-3 fifth with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to shortstop Dresser who made the throw to Foster at first base for the final out.

Two days later Poste-Schiavo and her crew made the short trek to the other side of the Parkway to Carter Park in Chelsea and returned home with a 22-2 triumph. Allen once again tossed all five innings, fanning 12 Lady Red Devils (out of a possible 15 outs) and allowing one hit and two earned runs with two walks.

The Lady Crimson Tide bats once again were hot from the outset, accounting for six runs in the top of the first thanks to a triple by Uga and base hits by Dresser, Romboli, Oliva, and Allen.

Everett made it 11-0 in the second, the key hits coming from Dresser with a double and Talyciah Arrington with a base hit.

The Everett defense finally got a chance to make a play with two outs in the bottom of the second — Allen had whiffed the first five Chelsea’s batters — when Uga scooped up a grounder at third and tossed to Ashley Seward at first for the out.

The Lady Tide put up eight more markers in the third. Romboli smacked a home run and added a single; Salvi had two base hits; Dresser delivered a double; and Oliva and Velev provided base hits.

The Tide then added their final three runs in the fourth on a double by Uga and hits by Arrington and Allen.

Chelsea pushed across two runs in its fourth thanks to some walks and a base hit, but Allen  set down the side in the fifth on a strikeout, a fly ball to center fielder Velev, and another K to end it.

“I’m really proud of how our team played, but I also have a lot of respect for Malden and Chelsea,” said Poste. “Those were tough games, and their players showed a lot of heart by staying in it and playing hard until the end.”

Poste and her crew face a busy week. They traveled to Lynn Classical this past Monday and to Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday). They will make the longer trek to Lowell tomorrow (Thursday) and will return home to entertain Somerville next Monday and Revere next Wednesday.

EHS girls’ tennis tops Mystic Valley

The Everett High girls’ tennis team split its matches this past week, earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mystic Valley on Monday before falling to Revere in another close contest last Wednesday.

Against Mystic Valley, the Lady Crimson Tide came out strong and confident, a tone set early by first singles player Tracy Pham. Pham was in control from the start, taking the first set 6-2 and leading 2-0 in the second before the match unfortunately ended in a forfeit by her opponent. At second singles, Nga Ho dominated her matchup, posting a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win. Jessica Du followed with another straight-set victory at third singles, winning 6-3, 6-0 and securing the third team point.

The first doubles team had to forfeit mid-match due to illness, trailing 5-7, 2-3 at the time. In the second doubles match, Anne Souza and Sophia Melo battled hard. After dropping the first set 3-6, they came back to win the second 6-4, pushing it to a third set before narrowly falling 4-6.

Wednesday’s encounter with Revere proved to be another nail-biter. Once again, it came down to the final match. Pham continued her stellar play at first singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win, and Ho backed her up with another commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory. Du, in the pivotal third singles spot, fought through a marathon match that extended to three sets, ultimately coming up short in a valiant effort.

First doubles duo Kelly St. Forte and Khadiza Nishat showed resilience after losing their first set 1-6. They rallied to take the second 6-4 before falling 0-6 in the deciding set. Souza and Melo at second doubles also showed improvement, holding their own throughout the match despite the final result.

“I’m proud of the way the girls competed this week,” said EHS head coach Courtney Meininger. “We’ve been in some very close matches, and I’m hopeful that we can carry this momentum and confidence into the final stretch of the season.”

The Everett High girls lacrosse team engaged in a hard-fought battle with Revere last week, but emerged triumphant in double-overtime, 6-5.

“We had a nail-biter of a game against Revere,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. “Despite the heat, the girls showed some serious grit, battling to a 5-5 tie in regulation and then clinching a thrilling 6-5 sudden-death victory in the second overtime period.”

Victoria Rodrigues led the Everett offense with four goals, including the game-winner. Amanda Verteiro reached the back of the Revere net for the other two goals.

Jones and her crew have a busy week on tap.
