EHS softball improves to 8-1

The Everett High softball team won four of its five games in the past week to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Last Monday the Crimson Tide defeated Lynn English, 10-4, at Glendale Park. After a scoreless first inning, the visiting Lady Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Lady Crimson Tide responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. A run-producing triple by Mia Allen that scored Kassidy Rivera (who had singled) and a two-run three-bagger by Ariana Osotio-Bonilla that scored Graziella Foster and Peyton Warren were the key hits in the rally.

English struck back for three runs in the third, but Everett responded in kind in the bottom of the frame with base hits by Rivera, Foster, and Warren producing the runs to leave matters at 8-4.

Alex Uga socked a solo homer in the fourth and then tripled home teammate Osorio-Bonilla (who had singled) in the fifth for the 10-4 finale.

Warren earned the win, tossing all seven innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk, allowing just five hits and two earned runs.

“We came out strong with a complete team effort,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “Peyton Warren was outstanding on the mound, going all seven innings, striking out 11, and limiting them to just five hits and two earned runs. Her performance with catcher Kassidy Rivera was the backbone of our win. In the second inning, we capitalized on a couple of their errors and aggressive base running, and Ariana Osorio-Bonilla’s big triple really set the tone for us to take a 5-1 lead. Our offense didn’t slow down either. Kassidy Rivera, Mia Allen, and Graziella Foster all contributed big hits, and Peyton even got in on the action herself. When Alexa Uga hit that home run in the fourth, it felt like we were really in control of this win.”

The following day the Tide took care of business with a 14-2 win against Chelsea. Everett’s bats were booming from the outset, with doubles by Osotio-Bonilla and Olivia Dresser producing a run; a two-run homer by Ashley Seward making it 3-0; and a triple by Uga (who  scored on an error) adding a fourth.

After Dresser tripled and scored on an error in the second to up the count to 5-0, the Tide put the game away with six markers in the third. Juliette Romboli singled, Jayla Davila singled, and Foster walked to load the bases. Warren and Osorio-Bonilla both doubled home two runs. Dresser then hit a two-run homer to make it 11-0.

After Chelsea struck for two runs in the fourth off Graziela Foster, who had come in for Warren in the pitching circle, the Tide wrapped up the contest with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 12-run rule. Dresser doubled home Allen (who had been hit by a pitch), Uga singled to score Dresser, and a hit by Romboli scored two more runs.

The pitching line showed Peyton Warren allowing no hits and no runs with five strikeouts in her three innings of work and Foster fanning five and allowing two hits and two earned runs in her two frames.

The following day the Tide made the short trip to Somerville and returned home with a 20-3 victory. Everett grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, the big hits coming on a double by Dresser, a two-run triple by Romboli, and a double by Davila.

Everett then exploded for 12 runs in the second. Osorio-Bonilla, Dresser, and Uga all bashed doubles, with Uga adding a two-run single as Everett batted around in the big inning. After the smoke had cleared and the dust had settled, Everett was in complete control, 16-0.

Somerville eventually would chip away for some runs and Everett added four more before the game was called after five. Warren and Foster once again shared the pitching duties.

“I’m incredibly proud of the way our team came out focused, energized, and ready to execute,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Peyton Warren and Graziella Foster were lights out on the mound, combining for 15 strikeouts and just two hits over 10 innings in the two games with Chelsea and Somerville. We set the tone early and our bats stayed hot throughout both games.”

The Tide then absorbed their first setback of the season with a 13-1 loss at non-league foe Whittier Tech last Thursday, their fourth game in four days. Everett’s lone run came in the top of the first on an RBI base hit by Romboli that scored Dresser, who had walked.

“I feel we did not bring our best effort,” said Poste-Schiavo. “We were flat, made too many mistakes, and didn’t compete the way we’ve shown we can. It’s frustrating, but it’s also our first loss — and sometimes, a tough one like this is what a team needs to refocus. I know this group, and I have no doubt we’ll bounce back stronger and hungrier to focus on getting the GBL wins.”

Poste-Schiavo’s words proved prophetic as the Lady Crimson Tide bounced back on the Patriots Day holiday in a big way with a 10-4 win over an up-and-coming Revere team that is coached by Megan ODonnell, a former player for Poste-Schiavo at Everett.

Everett, which is 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the GBL as the Lady Tide approach the halfway point of the season, play at Medford today (Wednesday) in a key GBL matchup. They will travel to Malden next Monday and to Chelsea next Wednesday.

EHS boys volleyball defeats Lynn English

The Everett High boys volleyball team split its two matches last week, defeating Lynn English, 3-1, but falling to Somerville, 3-0. Coach Michael Fineran’s squad now stands at 5-2 on the season.

“We are in control of our destiny as we move toward completing the first half of the schedule,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “We expected Somerville to be a tough matchup, but we were looking forward to a fun, competitive match. “

The Tide started off well, with senior setter Sidney Valentim serving three times, including an ace, to put Everett up 7-6, and later serving three more times to pull the Tide to within one, 17-16. However, that would prove to be as close as Everett would get in the first set, dropping the opener 25-17.

Senior captain Henrique Franca had eight kills in the opening frame, and 16 for the match, but the Crimson Tide could not match the Highlanders’  firepower and dropped the next two sets 25-16.

“It was not for lack of effort or hustle,” noted Fineran. “Somerville has a versatile attack and their servers put pressure on us all day.”

Fineran’s squad fared much better two days earlier against Lynn English, winning in straight sets, though each one was close. Junior setter Noel Lopez Ardon was five-for-six serving in the first set, and senior captain Matheus Queiroz had three kills and a block in the 25-22 win.

In the second set, junior Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had two aces, junior captain Christian Ramirez was perfect serving, and senior outside hitter Jefferson Umana had seven of his eight kills and served the final two points in a 30-28 win.

Freshman Danilo Texieira Fernandes had four aces in a row to give Everett some breathing room in the third set, Franca added three more kills, and Queiroz had two kills and a block as the Tide took the set, 25-21.

Fineran and his crew hosted Revere on Patriots Day and will travel to Medford today (Wednesday) morning to complete their first time through the tough GBL. They will entertain

GBL foes Malden next Monday and Chelsea next Wednesday.

“We know we can play better than we’ve shown so far, but we are in good shape to get back to the state tournament,” said Fineran.

EHS boys tennis defeats Revere

The Everett High boys tennis team defeated GBL rival Revere last Thursday on their home courts at Rossetti Park, 5-0. The Tide won all three singles matches by Henry Chen, Tariq Saddidin, and Carlos Mungia. Revere forfeited both of the doubles contests.

In a 5-0 loss to Malden last Monday, Bryant Jimenez provided the main highlight for the Tide, forcing his first singles match into a tie- breaker.

Last Wednesday, Everett came up short to Somerville, 5-0.  Second and third singles players Henry Chen and Anthony Fontes fell short in tiebreakers.

This past Monday on the holiday, the Tide fell to Lynn Classical 4-1 in which third singles player Anthony Fontes won his match.

Coach Greg Bluestein and his crew are scheduled to travel to Lynn English today (Wednesday) and will trek to Revere next Wednesday.

EHS girls lax hosts Malden Thursday AM

Although the Everett High girls lacrosse team came up on the short end of a 19-3 decision last week to Medford, EHS head coach Nicola Jones saw positive signs in the contest.

“This team had a good week last week despite a tough loss at home on Tuesday against Medford, showing great spirit and concentrating on playing their hardest,” said Jones. “Our goalie and defense displayed resilience despite the constant pressure and our offensive players did their best to get the ball in the net, with many players having opportunities.”

Captains Amanda Verteiro and Victoria Rodrigues scored a goal apiece in the first quarter, with Verteiro adding her second goal of the game in the final period.

Jones and her crew traveled to Somerville yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Malden tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 10:00 on the turf field at 7-Acre Park. They will travel to Revere next Tuesday.
