Two shutout wins
for EHS girls soccer
The Everett High girls soccer team put together a total team effort to post a pair of shutout victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Revere and Lynn Classical last week.
In the 3-0 blanking at Revere last Tuesday, Odalis Sandoval gave the Lady Crimson Tide a 1-0 lead off a corner kick and a scramble in the box. Sofia Arana-Quintanilla earned the assist. Johanna Flores scored the second goal, assisted by Brianna Santos. The third tally came via an own-goal by the Lady Patriots.
“Both Johanna and Brianna are making a name for themselves this season,” noted EHS head coach Domenick Persuitte.
Persuitte listed a number of Lady Tide who had a major impact on the game. “Kayla Andrade in the midfield and Connie Paz-Hernandez on the outside wing, who was moving the ball into the center and controlling her side,” said Persuitte. “Bella Mitrano, on the opposite side of Paz-Hernandez, crossed every ball into the box when called upon. Freshman Mahiya Begum showcased her speed as the definition of an off-the-bench player.
“Lastly, Sofia Arana-Quintanilla showed her ability to stay calm under pressure and made countless runbacks when the situation needed her skills,” said Persuitte, who also lauded the goalkeeping tandem of Julianna Rivera and Kaylyn Rivera, who combined to post the clean sheet.
“”This was a massive overall team win. We played as a unit and it looked and felt great,” Persuitte added.
Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide trekked to Lynn Classical and came home with a 4-0 victory. Brianna Santos led the offense, scoring the first hat trick of her varsity career.
Brianna’s first goal came from a deflection in the box and she was there to put it away. Her second came from a nice through-ball from fellow freshman Melany Arana. Santos achieved the hat trick late in the second half when she dribbled through the Classical defense and slotted the ball past the keeper.
Everett’s fourth goal came on a penalty kick (PK). Odalis Sandoval was taken down in the box and senior captain Sofia Arana-Quintanilla stepped up and nailed the PK, delivering the ball into the back corner of the Lady Ram net.
“Sofia was cool, calm, and collected when she was shooting the PK,” noted Persuitte.
“It was very hard to point out a notable player, as everyone played their part in the win,” said the coach. “However, Brianna Santos, Odalis Sandoval, Johanna Flores, Mahiya Begum, Gissell Lemus, Rosa Romero, and Sofia Arana-Quintanilla all showed the extra effort needed to win the game. Both of our goalies earned their third straight shutout and played very well.
“It was another great game for us,” Persuitte continued. “We are really starting to see the team come together and play as one. I am very pleased with our play. Watching them move the ball around really shows the hard work they have been putting in.”
The twin wins made it three victories in a row for Persuitte’s crew, all by shutout, a skein in which they outscored their opponents by a margin of 16-0.
This past Monday, the Lady Crimson Tide overcame the elements and O’Bryant High to record a 2-1 victory on the latter’s rainy and windswept home field.
Everett, which now stands at 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the GBL, was scheduled to entertain Revere today (Wednesday) and travel to non-league foe Waltham on Friday. They will return home to host Classical next Tuesday.
Volleyball team
defeats Chelsea
The Everett High girls volleyball team split its two contests last week with Greater Boston League foes Chelsea and Somerville.
In the 3-1 victory at Chelsea last Monday, the Lady Crimson Tide took the opening set, 25-21. Melissa Meireles had an early ace, MariaJose Cardenas had a kill and two aces, and Elora Philippe had three kills. Abigail Falkowski had two aces and a kill, and senior Kiana Flores, who was perfect from the service line in 15 attempts, served the final three points in the set.
The Tide dropped the second set 25-22. Everett missed seven serves in the set and managed only three kills (two by Falkowski and one by Philippe). Senior QiongQiong Chen had two aces, as did Meireles.
In the third set, junior Cecilia Da Silveira had two of her four kills. Philippe delivered three aces and a kill to give Everett a 23-22 lead, and captain Cassandra Tayag aced the final point.
In the decisive fourth set, Da Silveira had two aces and a kill. Sophomore setter Yahaira Pineda Tejada had a rare back row kill. Meireles had two aces in a string of six serves. Tayag had four kills. Philippe had a kill and an ace that sealed the match, 25-17.
In the contest with Somerville, EHS head coach Michael Fineran was pleased with his team’s effort despite coming up short by a score of 3-0.
“Somerville has a strong team this year and a height advantage that we could not overcome,” Fineran said. “Despite the final score, we actually played a solid game. Co-captains Melissa Meireles and MariaJose Cardenas played well, particularly on defense, and each had an ace.
“Captain Cassandra Tayag had a team high 12 serves, with an ace and a kill,” Fineran continued.” Junior setter Abigail Falkowski was second with nine serves, an ace, a block, and a team-high five kills. Junior hitter Elora Philippe had three kills, and freshman middle MariaClara Cunha had five serves, an ace, and two blocks.
“We are 3-3 and we play three games in each of the next four weeks,” Fineran added. “We have got to elevate our level of play if we want to keep playing in November.”
Fineran and his crew have a busy stretch ahead with five matches in 10 days. They were scheduled to host GBL rivals Medford this past Monday and Revere today (Wednesday). They will travel to non-league opponent Winthrop on Friday and return home to entertain GBL adversaries Malden next Monday and Lynn English next Wednesday.

cross-country teams
Although the Everett High boys and girls cross country teams came up short in their meet last Wednesday with Medford at Torbert Macdonald Park by identical scores of 19-42, EHS head coach Brendan Hahesy was pleased with his teams’ performance.
“We had a good day today, although we ultimately lost to Medford,” said Hahesy of the undefeated Mustangs. “I was very proud about how the team competed against what is always one of the best teams in the GBL.”
Chris Portillo led the Crimson Tide boys, finishing in second place with a time of 19:14. Kaleb Defreitas was the next Everett runner across the line in eighth place in a clocking of 21:07. Dominico Delle Rose finished ninth with a strong run of 21:36. Praytush Darai finished 12th in 22:35, and Tien Nguyen came across the line in 14th place in 22:42.
Michael Lemus (24:17), Oseas Erazo (26:48), Brasesh Maharjan (28:11), Ethan Ngo (29:46), WIlliam Le (38:00), Arnob Barua (50:00), and Tenzin Ngodop (50:02) also competed for the Crimson Tide.
On the girls’ side, Shashi Pokhrel finished in fourth place wth a clocking of 25:39 and Lina Sherrer took fifth place in 26:01. Nathalia Dos Santos (29:57), Taina Lopes (29:53), and Eve-Lynn Joseph (34:57) rounded out the top five for the Lady Crimson Tide.
Princika Humagain (35:57), Aliesha Thelus (36:21), Berthy Muscade (39:47), Bao Nguyen (42:12), and Carolina Bernardina (45:47) also ran well for the Everett squad.
Hahesy and his girls and boys teams, both of whom stand at 2-1 on the season, are scheduled to race at Chelsea today (Wednesday). They will host Malden next Wednesday at 7-Acre Park at the Rivergreen complex.

drops pair
The Everett High boys soccer team came up short in its two contests last week with Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Revere and non-league opponent Arlington.
In the 5-3 loss to Revere last Tuesday, the Crimson Tide battled back from early deficits to bring the contest to level at 2-2, but Revere scored three quick goals to pull away for the win.
The Tide scored with 10 minutes to go to draw within two goals, but it proved to be a case of too little, too late. Daniel Henriquez scored a brace (two goals) and Saymon Coelho added one.
“It was a very back-and-forth game in the first half,” said EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde. “We went goal-for-goal each time up until it was 2-2, but then Revere put back three more in a very short time period, which caused us to fall down quickly. We continued to strive forward and create opportunities until we finally got one with 10 minutes left.”
Last Friday the Tide hosted Arlington, a GBL foe from long ago), and came up on the short end of a 4-2 decision. The sides battled evenly through the first 25 minutes until the Spy Ponders struck for two goals before the half ended. Arlington added two more after the intermission to move out to a 4-0 advantage before the Tide got on the board with two goals in the final 10 minutes.
“With 10 minutes left we subbed in senior Jorge Ayala to add an attack up top with Saymon Coelho and Daniel Henriquez,,” said Landanverde, “and we were able to put in two goals before the game ended. Jorge got both assists.”
The Tide, who now stand at 2-5 on the season, are scheduled to host GBL rival Lynn English tomorrow (Thursday) and will travel to GBL opponent Lynn Classical next Wednesday.
EHS field hockey
defeats Malden, 2-0
The Everett High field hockey team posted its first win under new head coach Yasmine Akib with a 2-0 victory over Malden last Wednesday. After dropping a 4-0
decision to Arlington Catholic on Thursday, the Crimson Tide battled Greater Lowell to a 0-0 standoff.
Akib and her crew will travel to Hamilton-Wenham this Friday and will host Peabody next Monday and Revere next Wednesday.
