50/50 week for EHS softball team

The Everett High softball team engaged with a pair of their top rivals in the Greater

Boston League (GBL) during the vacation week and earned a split of the two contests.

In a battle on the holiday last Monday with an up-and-coming Revere team, which is coached by former Lady Crimson Tide Megan O’Donnell (who played under Everett head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo),  the Lady Crimson Tide came away with a 10-4 victory.

The Everett girls took control of the contest from the outset, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning off Revere pitcher Danni Hope Randall, who had just racked up her 300th career strikeout in her previous outing.

Arianna Osorio-Bonilla started the game with a double. Olivia Dresser singled, knocking in Arianna. Ashley Seward singled and Alexa Uga doubled, bringing in Dresser. Mia Allen swatted another two-bagger to score Seward and Graziella Foster belted the fourth Everett two-base hit of the inning, bringing around Uga and Allen. Jayla Davila then struck for yet another double to score Foster.

Revere reached Everett pitcher Peyton Warren (who tossed all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk) for two runs in the bottom of the inning and then added two more in the third to make it 6-4.

However, the Tide reinstated some breathing room with a two-out, two-run rally in the fourth. After the first two Everett hitters fanned, Uga and Allen singled, which was followed by a clutch hit by Foster that delivered both of her teammates.

Warren gave herself an additional insurance run in the fifth when she doubled, reached third on an error, and scored on a passed ball. Everett then scored the final run in the sixth thanks to an error for the 10-4 finale.

“This was a full team win, from Arianna setting the tone with that leadoff double to Peyton battling through seven innings, everyone stepped up,” said Poste-Schiavo. “We had big hits early from Olivia, Alexa, Mia, Graziella, and Jayla. They all came through in that first inning and really gave us momentum. Defensively, we tightened up as the game went on, made smart plays, and stayed composed.”

However, the Lady Crimson Tide were not as fortunate two days later in a battle for first place in the GBL against Medford in which Everett came up short by a score of 12-0.

The Tide managed just four singles on the day (by Uga, Rivera, Seward, and Warren), while Medford struck for 11 hits and nine earned runs, six of which came in the fourth that blew open what had been a tight 3-0 affair.

“It was a tough one,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Peyton gave us everything she had out there with Kassidy Rivera behind the plate, but we didn’t do enough behind her to back her up. Defensively, we made some mistakes that cost us, and against a team like Medford, you just can’t afford to give away extra outs. Offensively, we had runners on, but couldn’t produce hits. That’s something we’ll focus on and grow from.”

The Lady Crimson Tide, who have reached the halfway point of the season with a stellar overall record of 8-2 and 6-1 in the GBL, were scheduled  to meet Malden this past Monday and will make the short trek across the Parkway to Chelsea today (Wednesday). They will travel to Lynn Classical next Monday and to Lynn English next Wednesday.

EHS girls tennis splits two matches

The Everett High girls tennis team split its two matches during the holiday week. After narrowly falling to Lynn Classical last Monday, 3-2,  the Lady Crimson Tide bounced back strong with a dominant 5-0 win over Lynn English on Wednesday.

In Monday’s match against Classical, Everett received standout performances from Nga Ho and Jessica Du, who secured key victories at second and third singles. The outcome of the match came down to the second doubles contest. The Everett duo battled hard in a three-set thriller, but were edged out 6-3 in the final set.

Last Wednesday the Lady Tide swept all five matches against Lynn English in straight sets. At first singles, Tracy Pham delivered a clutch performance, winning 6-2, 6-3. Nga Ho earned her second win of the week with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 result, while Jessica Du was unstoppable at third singles, not dropping a single game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

In doubles play, Kelly St. Fort and Khadiza Nishant notched their first win as a pair this season with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory at first doubles. Anne Souza and Sophia Melo added to the victory, winning their second doubles match 6-3, 6-3.

Coach Courtney Meninger and her crew will host Revere today (Wednesday) on the courts at Rossetti Park. They will travel to Medford on Monday and return to Rossetti next Wednesday to entertain Malden.

EHS boys volleyball looks to get back on track

The Everett High boys volleyball team came up short in its two matches this past week, dropping contests with Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Revere and Medford.

Last Monday, the Crimson Tide fell by a score of 3-1 to the Revere Patriots.

“We had a chance to make a statement against Revere, the reigning GBL champions — on Patriots Day, no less — and I like how we regrouped after a 25-11 loss in the opening set to take the second set 25-18,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “We were led once again by senior captain Henrique Franca, who had nine kills and a block in the set.”

Many of Henrique’s kills were set up by senior teammate Sidney Valentim, who added six service points in the set. Franca had four kills and an ace to tie the third set 18-18, and senior captain Bryan Soares Gomes tallied five kills, but the Tide missed four serves and dropped the set,  25-21.

Soares Gomes had four more kills in the fourth set, and Franca had five kills and a block. Junior Noel Lopez Ardon served to give Everett the lead, 20-19, but the Tide dropped the set and match, 25-23.

“I liked how we hung with them, but Revere’s experience and poise proved to be the difference,” said Fineran. “I was encouraged by how we played and how we practiced Tuesday. I expected things to go better on Wednesday against Medford, but we never found our groove, and it led to a disappointing end.”

Once again Everett was neck-and-neck with the Mustangs throughout tha match, and again, Franca continued to be the most dominant player on the court, recording 18 kills for the second match in a row.

“But we struggled to get consistent scoring from other positions,” noted Fineran.

Senior Jefferson Umana had two aces, seven kills, and a block playing outside hitter, but it was not enough, as the Tide dropped the opening set, 25-19. Sophomore Adam Bousbaa had four service points, including an ace to tie the second set at 21-21, but Everett fell short,  25-22. The Crimson Tide were tied late in the third set, 22-22, but fell shy, 25-23.

“Our team had two opportunities to get closer to our goal of reaching the state tournament, but ultimately fell short in both matches,” said Fineran. “We still control our destiny. We need to win five of our last 11 matches, but we need to be more focused on offense and tighten up our defense if we want to be taken seriously.

“The players who’ve been with the program for the past three or four years know how every point matters,” Finefran said. “Any team can beat us, and if we want to win, we need to go out and make it happen. We have five wins so far, and we will play four of those teams again. Those matches were just as close as these losses, and we have to be ready to get everyone’s best games from here on out. It won’t be easy, but it should be exciting.”

Fineran and his crew, who now stand at 5-4 on the season, have a busy week ahead: they were scheduled to meet Malden this past Monday; Chelsea at home today (Wednesday); Pioneer Charter on Friday; Lynn Classical at home next Monday; and Lynn English at home next Wednesday.
