EHS girls lacrosse earns two victories

The Everett High girls lacrosse team broke into the win column with a pair of victories this past week. After coming up short to Medford last Monday, 14-2, in which Amanda Verteiro and Nicole Damaceno scored the goals for the Lady Crimson Tide, coach Nicola Jones’s crew put it all together the following day to defeat Malden, 11-9, behind the offensive efforts of Verteiro and Victoria Rodrigues, who scored multiple goals.

The team not only celebrated their first win, but also the performance of three-year varsity player Lais Antonio, who scored her first-ever goal.

The Lady Crimson Tide wrapped up the week with another victory at home on Thursday, defeating Revere, 9-5. Damaceno and Verteiro led the way in the scoring department, with Rodrigues, Trinh Dang, and defenseman Cassandra Tayag contributing a goal apiece.

“Throughout the week, the defense, led by Kadwina Alcin and Cassandra Tayag, was consistently strong, and special recognition goes to our goalie, Briana Sequeira,” said Jones. “As a first-year player, she’s shown impressive dedication to improving her skills.”

Jones and her crew, who stand at 2-3 on the season, were scheduled to play Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and will travel to Somerville next Tuesday morning for a 10:00 opening draw.

EHS baseballwins two, now 4-1; Tide host three games this week

The Everett High baseball team enjoyed a successful week, winning two of its three contests with victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Chelsea and non-league opponent Charlestown.

The lone setback came via a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at GBL foe Lynn Classical last Tuesday.

“Both teams played phenomenal defense,” said EHS head coach Malik Love of the battle with Classical. The Tide received a superb pitching performance from Derek Soper, who tossed five innings, striking out six Ram hitters and yielding only two hits and one run. Nordeivy Santana tossed a scoreless sixth. The Crimson Tide managed only two hits, those coming from MJ Guida and Isaiah Goffigan.

However, the Everett offense came back in a big way two days later with a 14-1 triumph at Chelsea. Guida (double) and Nordeivy Santana (triple) struck for extra base hits against the Red Devils. Tyer Freni started on the mound and went 2.2 innings in which Tyler fanned six Red Devils. Guida tossed 1.1 frames, striking out two, and senior Renato Santiago tossed a perfect final inning with one K. (The contest was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.)

This past Friday Love’s crew hosted Charlestown at Glendale and cruised to a 13-6 triumph.  After grabbing a 3-0 lead in the opening inning, the Tide exploded for six runs in the third to move out to a 9-2 advantage (Charlestown had scored two runs in its half of the third) and never were threatened.

Guida and Freni, hitting in the 1-2 spots in the lineup, wielded the big bats. Both went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Santiago had two big hits, one with runners on second and third and the other with the bases loaded, to produce three RBI.

Soper, hitting in the DH spot, had a nice day at the plate with two hits, two walks, a run scored, and an RBI. Albert Santana delivered two RBI with a base hit and also scored a run.

Armani Negron started and went the first three innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits. Nordeivy Santana tossed 1.2 frames of hitless and scoreless baseball, though he walked five. Guida came on for the final 2.1 innings, allowing no hits and an unearned run.

Love and his crew have a busy stretch with five games in 10 days as they reach the midway mark of the season. They played at Lynn English this past Monday and will host Somerville today (Wednesday) at 4:00; non-league opponent Belmont on Friday at 4:15; and Revere on the Monday holiday at 10:00 a.m. They will make the short trek to Medford next Wednesday morning for a noontime opening pitch.

Two wins for EHSboys volleyball; hosts Somerville today

The Everett High boys volleyball team improved to 4-1 with victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Chelsea and Lynn Classical this past week.

In the 3-1 victory at Chelsea, seniors Sidney Valentim and captain Henrique Franca were clicking early, with Valentim serving 10 in a row and setting Franca up for six kills in the opening set win, 25-16.

Things were tighter in the second set, but junior Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had a run of eight serves, and senior captain Bryan Soares Gomes had seven kills (Bryan had 13 kills on the day) to give Everett a 2-0 lead.

After dropping the third set, the Tide rallied to tie the fourth set late. Junior captain Christian Ramirez served five in a row, and was 15-for-15 on the day. Lopez Ardon tied it up, and Franca nailed his 17th kill of the match to give Everett a 27-25 win in set four.

Everett hosted Lynn Classical last Wednesday, with the match following the same script as the Chelsea encounter. Everett controlled the first set, but had to rally to win the match in the fourth set.

“Both teams entered the contest at 3-0, so we figured it would be a tight match,” noted EHS head coach Michael Fineran. Franca had six serves, two aces, and four kills in the opening set, but it was Soares Gomes who was the star in the set, tallying seven of his 12 kills and hitting all five serves in, including the last three points in the 25-19 win.

Everett was far less productive in the second set, mustering a mere five kills as a team, and Danilo Teixeira Fernandes nailed the only two aces in a 25-15 loss.

However, the Tide’s offensive attack returned in the third set, with Jefferson Umana and senior Donald Vo each getting a kill, Soares-Gomes getting three, and Franca delivering nine in the 25-21 win.

Umana and Soares-Gomes each had a pair of kills in the fourth set, and Franca had seven, giving him 22 for the match. Still, Everett was down, 23-21, and struggling to receive Classical’s serves.

“I thought the same thing I thought at this point against Chelsea: this thing is going five sets,” said Fineran. “But we used a timeout to get refocused, and we were able to make a better pass off of the next serve, which led to a Franca kill off of an assist from Lopez Ardon.”

Matheus Teixeira-Fernandes served the final three points of the match for a 26-24 victory. The last point of the game came, fittingly, on a block by Franca. “Henrique is a special player,” said Fineran. “He started every game as a freshman four years ago. He has been an all-star and our team leader in kills since his sophomore year. He is on pace for 400 serves and more than 250 kills. He is fun to watch and a joy to coach. With Queiroz healthy again, and Umana and Soares-Gomes clicking as well, we have the offense to be competitive throughout the season.”

The lone setback for the Tide came Friday with a loss in straight sets to Maldem.

“We knew that Malden would be a strong team and we were looking forward to seeing how we responded,” Fineran said. “But they were able to smother our offense with a combination of blocking and a relentless back row, and they put pressure on us every time they sent the ball to our side.”

Senior captain Matheus Queiroz returned after missing the previous three games with an ankle injury and notched three kills. Senior Jefferson Umana had five kills. Junior setter Noel Lopez-Ardon had a team-high 13 service points with two aces. Freshman Danilo Teixeira- Fernandes had two aces in seven serves.

Fineran and his crew were scheduled to travel to Lynn English this past Monday before a home showdown today (Wednesday) against GBL foe Somerville.

They will entertain Revere on Monday at 11:15 in another key GBL match and travel to Medford next Wednesday.

Boys tracktops Medford

The Everett High boys outdoor track and field team opened its season by splitting a tri-meet with Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Medford and Chelsea last week.

In the contest with Medford, the Crimson Tide won by a score of 70-53. The top scorer for the Tide vs. the Mustangs with 13 points was junior captain Kayshaun Eveillard, who won the long jump with a leap of 20′-2.5″ and the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.2, and took second in the 200 dash in a clocking of 23.8.

The Tide dominated the throwing events vs. Medford, going 1-2-3 in all three to take all 27 of the available points.

Senior captain Fabrice Michaud was a double-winner for coach Jehu Cimea’s squad, capturing the shot-put with a throw of 39′-7.5″ and the discus with a toss of 94′-6″.

Senior David Roseme won the javelin with a toss of 98′-10″. David also took second place in the discus.

Senior Luvens Hector won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.1 and sophomore Arloc Akre took first-place in the 110 hurdles in a clocking of 19.2.

Adding three points to the EHS column on the scoresheet with second-place finishes were: junior captain Lucas Nunez in the two-mile and the 800; junior Kervens Joseph in the 100 dash; Miguel Silveria in the long jump; senior Kawan Medeiros in the javelin; and junior Gaetano Foster in the shot-put.

Contributing single points with third-place performances were: junior Miguel Silveria in the 100 dash; Kervens Joseph in the 200 dash; senior Kawan Medeiros in the long jump; Trevon Carrington in the shot; Lucas Nunez in the javelin; and junior Jonathan Goes in the discus.

In addition, the 4 x 100 relay quartet of senior JN Baptiste, sophomore Arioc Akre, junior Saymon Silva, and junior Migeuel Silveria nipped their Mustang counterparts  by 0.1 of a second, 50.2-50.3.

In the portion of the meet with Chelsea in which the Tide narrowly fell short by a score of 65-61, Eveillard was triple winner (400, 200, and LJ).

Additional first-place finishers vs. Chelsea were: Kervens in the 100 dash, Akre in the 110 hurdles; Nunez in the 2-mile; and the 4 x 100 relay team.

Although the long-jump trio of Eveilard, Silveria, and Medeiros and the 200 dash threesome of Eveillard, Joseph, and Hector swept their Chelsea rivals, the big difference from the Medford meet came in the throwing events, with the Red Devils winning 19 of the 27 points.

“It was a hard-fought meet for both the boys and girls teams,” said Cimea. “Everyone went out in the cold and ran hard.”

The Tide was scheduled to travel to Manning Field in Lynn yesterday (Tuesday) for a tri-meet with GBL foes Lynn Classical and Lynn English and are off until April 28 when they will trek to Revere for another tri-meet with the host Patriots and Malden.

EHS girls track deadlocks Medford

The Everett High girls outdoor track and field team earned a rare 61-61 tie with Medford in a tri-meet at Chelsea last week.

Leading the way for coach Jehu Cimea’s Lady Crimson Tide vs. Medford was senior captain Fahema Coudo, who won the shot-put with a toss of 26′-2.5″ and the discus with a throw of 68′-6″.

In addition, fellow senior Clarice Alexis won the javelin with a throw of 84′-6″ to give Everett a sweep of the three throwing events that enabled the Tide to take all 27 points. Freshman Stessy Joseph took second in the discus and third in the shot-put; junior Keneisha Remy took second in the shot; junior Ariana Rouse grabbed third in the disc; senior Emilia Maria-Babcock took second in the javelin; and junior Casey Martinez finished  third in the jav.

Senior Captain Devonnie Gomez-Walrond led an Everett sweep in the 100 hurdles with a clocking of 20.9, followed by teammates Amina Mekic and Leylah Aubourg.

The Tide’s 4 x 100 relay quartet of Maria-Babcock, junior Zoe Massiah, Gomez-Walrond, and junior Shinead Riley defeated their Medford counterparts by 3.4 seconds, 59.1-1:02.5.

Earning three points for their second-place finishes were: Aubourg in the 400 hurdles; Riley in the 100 meter dash; Martinez in the 1-mile; Maria-Babcock in the 200 dash; and Clarice Alexis in the long jump.

Adding crucial single points in a meet where every point mattered with third-place efforts were: freshman Shashi Pokhreil in the 2-mile;  Clarice Alexis in the 100 dash; Akanksha Neupane in the 1-mile; senior Milena Antonio in the 800; and freshman Alana Diaz in the 200 dash.

In the Chelsea portion of the meet, the Lady Crimson Tide fell short by a score of 77-49. The Lady Crimson Tide outscored the Lady Red Devils in the throwing events, 14-13, led by Coudo with second-places in the shot and disc and by Alexis, who took first in the javelin. In addition, Maria-Babcock took second in the jav.

The Everett trio of Riley, Alexis, and Massiah swept the 100 dash and the duo of Martinez and Neupane went 1-2 in the 1-mile. Gomes-Walrond and Maria-Babcock took second-place in the 110 hurdles and 200 dash respectively.

Adding single-points with third-place performances were: Amina Mekic in the 110 hurdles; freshman Elora Phillipe in the 400 dash; and senior Milena Antonio in the 800.

However, Chelsea was led by its sophomore star, Thania Simon, who won three events (the triple jump, long jump, and 200 dash) and anchored the winning Chelsea 4 x 100 relay that edged Everett by 0.6 of a second, 59.1-59.7.

The girls traveled to Lynn yesterday (Tuesday) for a tyri-meet with Lynn English and Lynn Classical. Their next meet is not until April 28 vs. Revere and Malden.

Two more winsfor EHS softball

The Everett High softball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Lynn Classical and Malden last week.

The Lady Crimson Tide backed a fine pitching effort from Peyton Warren (who allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking three) to register an 8-4 victory over Lynn Classical, perennially one of the top teams in GBL, last Wednesday at Glendale Park.

After both teams were scoreless through the first two innings, with Warren escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second by fanning the next two Lady Rams (Everett also had the bases loaded in the second but was unable to score), Classical broke the deadlock with a solo run in the top of the third.

However, the Lady Crimson Tide responded with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the inning. Jayla Davila started the rally with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a base hit by Olivia Dresser. A base hit by Alexa Uga was followed by a double by Ashley Seward that brought in Dresser. Another base hit by Graziella Foster delivered Uga and, after Mia Allen drew a walk to load the bases, Warren helped her own cause with a two-RBI base hit.

The Lady Rams got one back in the fourth, but Everett responded in kind in their half of the inning when Arianna Osorio-Bonilla walked, Dresser singled, and a sac fly by Seward brought across Ororio-Bonilla to leave matters at 6-2.

Classical narrowed the gap to 6-4 in the fifth, but the Lady Crimson Tide once again rallied with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Base hits by Allen and Kassidy Rivera and a walk to Warren filled the sacks, with two passed balls allowing Allen and Rivera to race home.

Classical threatened in the sixth, placing runners at first and second with one out, but the Everett infield responded by handling two ground balls, with Dresser at shortstop throwing to Uga at third for the force out and then Osorio-Bonilla at second tossing to Foster at first for the third out.

Warren ended the game in the seventh with a flourish, striking out the final Lady Ram. On offense, the final stat line showed: Olivia Dresser, 2 for 4 with 1 RBI; Alexa Uga, 1 for 3; Ashley Seward, 1 for 2, 2 RBI; Graziella Foster, 1 for 3, 1 RBI; Mia Allen, 1 for 2; Kassidy Rivera, 1 for 2; and Peyton Warren 1 for 2, 2 RBI.

“We definitely started hitting the ball harder in the third inning and then again in the fifth,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “Classical had some opportunities to score and we made sure to make the plays to stop that from happening. Peyton Warren pitched an amazing game and Kassidy Rivera did great behind the plate. The team is starting to become more comfortable in their positions and at the plate.”

Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide hosted Malden and came away with a 22-5 triumph. Mia Allen saw her first action of the season in the pitcher’s circle, tossing all five innings (the game was stopped because of the mercy rule), allowing just three hits and four earned runs while striking out five and walking four.

Everett moved out to a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to 10 bases on balls, with the lone hit coming from Rivera. The Lady Golden Tornadoes got on the board with a run in the second, but the Lady Crimson Tide responded with five markers in the bottom of the frame.

A walk to Allen, a base hit by Foster, and a walk to Juliette Romboli loaded the bases. After Luiza Velev drew another base-on-balls to force in Allen, Mia Oliva delivered a base hit that scored two runs. Seward and Uga came through with two more hits for an RBI apiece to make it 15-1.

Everett upped the count to 19-2 in the third, the key hits coming from Seward with an RBI base hit and Uga with a two-RBI triple. Uga continued her heavy-hitting in the fourth with a three-run homer to account for the final Everett runs of the day.

“Our girls played well and stayed focused, but we were mindful of the situation,” said Poste-Schiavo. “The other team was short on pitching, so we made sure to manage the game with respect. We weren’t trying to run up the score. We just focused on playing the right way. When we did get the opportunity to hit, we hit hard and in the right spots.

“This was Mia’s first game this season and she did well pitching with Emma Salvi catching for her,” Poste-Schiavo added.

The Lady Crimson Tide have a busy stretch with six games in 10 days (which will bring them to the halfway point of the season). They were scheduled to meet Lynn English this past Monday and Chelsea yesterday (Tuesday). They will make the short trek to Somerville today (Wednesday) and then will make the longer journey to non-league rival Whittier Tech tomorrow (Thursday).

Everett will take on two key GBL opponents next week. They will play at an up-and-coming Revere team (which is coached by Megan O’Donnell, who played for Poste-Schiavo at Everett) on the holiday on Monday at 10:00 and then will host archrival Medford next Wednesday at Glendale at 4:00.

Jessica Du made her singles debut this season and delivered a great match. Jessica took her first set to a tiebreaker, winning it 9-7, dropped the second 1-6, but came back strong in the third with a convincing 6-2 win.

At first doubles, Khadiza Nishant teamed up with senior Brenda Vilhete, who made her varsity debut. They fought hard, but came up short, 1-6, 2-6. At second doubles, Anne Souza and Sophia Melo returned to the court together, falling 3-6, 4-6.

“However, the chemistry between Anne and Sophia is growing, and I’m excited to see how they progress throughout the rest of the season,” said Meminger.

EHS boys tennis defeats Medford

The Everett High boys tennis team earned a 4-1 victory at Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Medford this past Wednesday.

Leading the way for coach Greg Bluestein’s squad was the Tide’s top singles player, Bryant Jimenez, who defeated his Mustang counterpart in straight sets, 2-0. Anthoiny Fontes won his match at third singles, 2-1.

Both of the Crimson Tide’s doubles tandems topped their Medford counterparts, with the first doubles duo of Pablo Jimenez & Carlos Mungia winning in straight sets, as did the second doubles tandem of Eduardo Guevara & Marcos Castro.

Everett’s #2 singles player, Henry Chen, battled fiercely with his Mustang rival before falling in a third-set tiebreaker.

The Tide made the long trek to Lowell the following day and came up on the short end of a 5-0 decision.

Bluestein and his crew will travel to GBL opponent Somerville today (Wednesday) and will host GBL foe Revere on the courts at Rossetti Park tomorrow (Thursday). They will trek to GBL rivals Lynn Classical (Monday) and Lynn English (Wednesday) for matches at 10:00 a.m. during the holiday week.
