Boys Soccer Team Opens Season Friday at Malden

The Everett High boys soccer team will open its 2011 season Friday at Greater Boston League rival Malden. The Crimson Tide will stay on the road to non league foe Danvers Monday before hosting Cambridge of the GBL next Wednesday evening under the lights and on the turf at Everett Stadium at 7:00.

Coach Fred Jannino, whose team qualified for the state tourney last year with a 7-7-3 record before losing to Medford in the opening round 2-1, will be greeting a lot of new faces for his 2011 edition.

“It’s almost a completely new team,” said Jannino, whose captains are seniors Gabriel Moyer, who holds down one of the two center midfielder spots, and Eric Chajon, the sweeper. “We’ll be bringing up a lot of players from last year’s junior varsity, so we’ll have a lot of underclassmen.”

The Crimson Tide have scrimmaged two opponents thus far in the pre season, Brookline and Arlington. Among those who have shone thus far for Everett are junior center midfielder Ruben Lourenco and freshmen Edgar Escobar and Girrado Gron, both of whom figure to see plenty of action at midfield and forward.

“We did well in both of the scrimmages,” noted Jannino. “But we have a young team that we hope will be gaining experience as the season progresses.”
