Golfers top Somerville, 39-33

The Everett High golf team defeated Somerville last week, 39-33, for their first victory of the season. The match took place on the Crimson Tide’s their home course at Mt. Hood.

“It was a nice win,” said EHS head coach Iggy Giangregorio. “The team played well and the victory was well deserved.”

Crimson Tide Captain and No. 1 player Matt Huse was on top of his game, shooting a match best 36 (which is two over par on the front nine at Mt. Hood), a performance he and his team  needed because his Somerville rival in the No. 1 slot shot a fine 37. Matt edged his opponent 5-4.

Mike Yebba, playing at No. 4, came through with a monster day, shooting a 40 and topping his Somerville foe 8.5-.5, giving Everett a plus eight advantage at that position.

Other winners for Everett on the day were Derek Bankus, 6-3, at No. 6; freshman Stephen Garrity, 5.5-3.5, at No. 7; and sophomore Quinton Flint, 5.5-3.5, at No. 8.

Eric Russo, playing in the  No. 2 spot, chipped four points onto the Everett scorecard, while Mike Vitukevich at No. 3 and Stephen Chaves at No. 5 both added an important 2.5 points onto their team’s total.

Giangregorio and crew were scheduled to host Cambridge yesterday (Tuesday) and take on Malden Thursday. They will compete in the GBL Meet on Monday and host Malden Tuesday.
