Although the Everett High golf team dropped three matches last week to Saugus, Medford, and Malden Catholic, there were some highlights for Coach Iggy Giangregorio’s linksters.
Senior Captain Matt Huse, playing in the No. 1, slot, matched his opponents virtually stroke for stroke in all three contests. Matt shot a pair of 39s against Saugus and Medford, while his rivals shot 38s. Matt scored four points in both of those matches (out of nine holes) and played his M.C. foe to a 4.5-4.5 standoff.
“Matt played very well for us,” said Giangregorio. “He goes up against the other team’s top player in every match and he plays them virtually even every time.”
Teammate Eric Russo, who plays at No. 2, also turned in strong efforts, earning three points each against Saugus and Medford and 3.5 against Malden Catholic.
Sophomore Anthony DiPierro, slotted at No. 7 against Saugus, played well, placing four points onto the Everett score card. Freshman Stephen Garrity, playing at No. 8 vs. Saugus, won 3.5 points against his counterpart. Garrity also chipped in with three points in the No. 7 slot against M.C.
Mike Vitukevich, Everett’s No. 3 player, scored 3.5 points against Medford. No. 4 Mike Yebba added three points in that match. Stephen Chaves, playing at No. 6, played his Medford counterpart to a 4.5-4.5 tie. Jaffer Shiek added 1.5 points to the Everett total at No. 7 against Medford.
Sophomore Quinton Flint saw his first varsity action, playing at No. 8 against M.C., and scored two points. Dennis Bankus also contributed two points against M.C. at No. 5.
Giangregorio and his crew hosted GBL archrival Somerville yesterday (Tuesday) and will do likewise for Cambridge next Tuesday.
