The Everett High girls basketball is sporting a perfect 1-0 record after recording a 46-37 victory over Arlington last Tuesday,
Tori Cyurus and Michelle Fenelon shared scoring honors for the Lady Crimson Tide with 12 points each. Taylor Sweeney chipped in with nine points, while Lisa Aylward added seven, Rachel Pierce (who was playing in her first varsity game) hit for six, and Jackie Hanlon scored two points.
Coach Tammy Turner’s squad, whose season opener the week before with East Boston was postponed, got off to a slow start, as the Lady Crimson Tide scored only 15 points in the first half and left at the intermission trailing by a 20-15 margin.
However, Turner changed her team’s defensive strategy at the start of the second half by employing a man to man defense with her guards. The new defensive scheme energized the Lady Crimson Tide, as it both created turnovers and led to easy transition baskets.
“Tori (Cyrus), Michelle (Fenelon), and Taylor (Sweeney) really picked up the tempo for us and got us going,” noted Turner. “The forced Arlington into a lot of mistakes and that gave us opportunities on offense.”
Turner and her crew have a busy week, as the girls hosted Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and will host East Boston today in the makeup of the earlier postponement. They will be at home again on Friday against Cambridge and then travel to Marblehead on Sunday.
