EHS sports get underway this week
The highly-anticipated 2021 fall sports season, in which Crimson Tide student-athletes, coaches, parents, and fans are hoping for a return to normalcy after the pandemic wiped out the 2020 fall season, is set to get underway this week.
The EHS boys and girls soccer teams kicked off their 2021 campaigns yesterday (Tuesday) against Greater Boston League rival Revere.
Coach Pedro Blas’s Crimson Tide boys will be led by senior captain Luan Cruz.
“We played Lynn Tech twice for pre-season games,” said Blas. “We won the first 2-1 and lost the second 2-4. I mixed things around in both games, so it wasn’t a solid base. Hopefully we’ll be ready for our season-opener.”
Blas and his crew will play at Medford tomorrow (Thursday) and then will make the short ride to East Boston for a non-league encounter with the Jets on Saturday.
The EHS girls soccer team, under the direction of first-year head coach Sheryl Steeves, also opened its 2021 campaign yesterday (Tuesday) against Revere. Steeves and her crew will entertain Medford tomorrow (Thursday) and will host Malden next Tuesday.
“We had a scrimmage against Dracut last week that we didn’t do so well in,” noted Steeves. “We have a few girls recovering from minor injuries. We are looking to do better in our season-opener against Revere.”
The members of the 2021 Lady Crimson Tide varsity squad are: freshman Emilia Maria-Babcock, sophomore Shyann Ambersley, senior Caelle Gauvin, junior Leah Ferullo, junior Kimberly Herrera, freshman Citlali Marquez Cortes, sophomore Layla Betancur-Cardona, senior Maria Paula Zubieta Numpaque, senior Leticia Zavala Ayala, senior Stephanie Azurda, senior Marianna Madrigal Orrego, freshman Yelsa Garcia, junior Leandra Germain, junior Lamiah Wyzard, and senior Gitalia “Gigi” Boyce.
The 2021 edition of the Lady Crimson Tide will be led by senior captains Gigi Boyce and Mariana Madrigal Orrego.
Coach Melissa O’Donnell and the EHS field hockey team will host GBL rival Malden today (Wednesday) at 7 Acre Park. The 2021 squad will be led by a quartet of captains, Celeste Fucccillo, Sarai Velez, Melissa Lopes, and Dante Masucci.
“Our team is looking good this season, with most of our Fall 2 team returning, so we have experience at the varsity level and we are looking to make a run this season,” said O’Donnell.
O’Donnell and her crew will make the long journey to non-league rival Haverhill tomorrow (Thursday) and then will play at St. Mary’s of Lynn on Monday.
The EHS volleyball team opens its season tomorrow (Thursday) at Medford. Coach Jen Spayne’s squad will stay on the road with matches at Triton on Friday and at Malden on Monday before hosting their first match on their home court next Wednesday at 5:15 against Chelsea.
