It’s always a good thing when reporters ask you to describe “your touchdown” and the player asks politely, ‘Which one?’
Thus was the response by junior Tyrese Baptiste as he commented on his outstanding 2-TD performance in Everett’s 27-21 victory over Xaverian Friday night.
Baptiste’s 74-yard punt return for a touchdown followed a sequence in which he was unable to haul in a long pass from quarterback Duke Doherty.
“I dropped a big pass before that and I told the coach before the punt return, ‘I got this,” said Baptiste. “I caught the ball, saw the middle, ran up the middle, used my blocks, cut outside, and made the last man miss,” said Baptiste.
As for his 63-yard touchdown run that all but sealed the victory, Baptiste credited Everett’s offensive linemen on the play.
“The offensive line made some beautiful blocks and I waited for my guard to pull and I just cut up the middle,” said Baptiste. “I trust my speed a lot.”
Baptiste said the team is playing with confidence.
“Last week we had some first-game jitters,” said Baptiste. “We’re like a family now. We’re preparing for St. John’s [Shrewsbury].”
