Stanley DeMartinis Jr. was a record-setting home run hitter at Bentley University and had an extended tryout with the Cincinnati Reds where he trained alongside another pretty good athlete named Deion Sanders.
DeMartinis, 39, still plays semi-professional baseball and coaches his two sons in Little League, but for the past twenty years he has also worked in the physical fitness and health industry. While a student at Bentley, he began helping his father, Stanley Sr., operate World Gym in East Boston which is now a Planet Fitness facility.
“We’ve seen a lot of the changes in the industry and all the new gym models and we were very fortunate enough to get involved with Planet Fitness back in 2006,” said DeMartinis.
And now DeMartinis is set to bring his two decades of experience and expertise to Revere as he opens a brand new Planet Fitness facility on an entirely redeveloped property at 270 Charger St. in the Northgate Shopping Center.
Beautiful. New. Spacious. State-of-the-Art.
Those are the descriptions that DeMartinis has been hearing from prospective members and visitors who have toured the 20,000 square-feet building that also has a new brightly lit, landscaped, parking lot with video surveillance.
Revere Councillor Arthur Guinasso, whose ward includes the Northgate Shopping Center, was among the local officials who stopped by to congratulate DeMartinis on the opening of his new facility.
“I took a tour and couldn’t believe how gorgeous it is,” said Guinasso. “It’s an absolutely beautiful place and I think people are going to love working out there.”
Councilor-at-Large Robert Haas said he intends to become a member at Planet Fitness.
“I understand it’s a tremendous facility and a first-class operation,” said Haas. “I wish the best to Stan. He’s a great business person.”
“This business is excellent for the city of Revere where a lot of people are in to health and exercise,” said Councillor-at-Large John Correggio.
Building a brand new facility from the ground up allowed DeMartinis the opportunity to implement his own unique ideas and vision for the specialized facility.
Members will have plenty of options for exercise. They can work out on one of 50 Cybex treadmills, 25 light fitness elipticals, 15 Cybex Arch trainers, or 15 stationary bicycles.
“The centerpiece of our gym floor is our 100 pieces of cardio equipment,” said DeMartinis.
Members can also participate in Planet Fitness’ unique circuits: a 30-minute express workout room with weights and step stations that will be staffed by a certified instructor; a 12-minute abdominal exercise area; and an MTS hammer strength area for advanced fitness workouts.
“Most importantly the point is that we have something for everyone here,” said DeMartinis. “And part of what our franchise organization does is offer free instruction to all of our members. A trainer will sit down with a member and ask what your goals are. We give more than 1,000 free classes a month. It’s unlimited free group training: PE (Physical Education) at PF (Planet Fitness).”
Members will also enjoy the tanning spa area at Planet Fitness that includes two hydro beds (full body massage tables), red light therapy (which is a rejuvenation system that increases melatonin in the skin cells and takes away aging and wrinkles), three sun tanning beds and three sun tanning booths.
The tanning spa area is free for members who also can bring in a friend free of charge. Energy drinks and cooler drinks are half price for members.
DeMartinis said he is proud of his family’s association with Planet Fitness. He also operates two PF facilities in the Atlanta area.
“Planet Fitness is the No. 1 health club in the country,” said DeMartinis. “They serve over three million people and members can use any one of our 550 locations nationwide.”
DeMartinis, whose brother, Sal, a WPI graduate, is assisting at the facility, is excited about the response to his new business in Revere. “New members are flying in the door. We’re happy. It’s been a long process to get to this point and we’re excited about being able to operate in this location for a very long time.”
There will be a grand opening event Monday when Patrick House from the “Biggest Loser” television show makes a celebrity guest appearance at Planet Fitness.
The new Planet Fitness is somewhat of a homecoming for Stanley DeMartinis. He grew up on Abruzzi Street across from St. Anthony’s Church. He attended Immaculate Conception School and played in the Revere Little League before taking his incredible athletic talents to St. John’s Prep where he became an All-Scholastic performer. At Bentley, he led the football team to 33 consecutive victories and hit 55 home runs for the baseball team in three seasons.
Planet Fitness will be open 24 hours for five days a week and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
