Edward Leyden, Jr.
Retired Lithographer
Edward F. Leyden, Jr. a 56 year resident of Everett, formerly of Revere, passed away on Sunday, February 2 after a long illness at The Villages at Willow Crossing in Mansfield, MA. He was 95 years old.
Mr. Leyden was born, raised and educated in Revere and was a graduate of the Revere High School Class of 1938. He entered the United States Navy in June of 1943 hoping to serve his country proudly overseas. But, due to a medical condition, he was honorably discharged shortly thereafter that same year. After leaving the service, he worked several jobs before beginning a 30 plus year career as a lithographer at Buck Printing Company.
Mr. Leyden married his love, Barbara A (Herron), in 1948. The couple settled in Everett and started their family. Mr. Leyden was known to be a “quiet man” but his actions spoke volumes of the man that he was. He was very industrious and was known to build homes and he could fix anything. He was a testament to the “Greatest Generation.”
He and his wife were very proud parishioners and supporters of Our Lady of Grace Church. He retired at age 65 and continued to stay busy with one of his biggest joys in his life – his 11 grandchildren.
In 1990, Mr. Leyden lost his daughter, Kathleen to a battle with cancer and on December 26, 1991, he lost his dear wife, Barbara. He continued to stay faithful and active and occupied his time with his children and grandchildren, often spending summers with his family on Cape Cod. He was also a past member of Knights of Columbus Council #179.
He was the beloved husband of 43years of the late Barbara A. (Herron); loving father of Edward F. Leyden, III and his wife, Norma of North Reading, William P. Leyden and his wife, Jenne of Medford, Carol Leyden-Otto and her husband, David G. of Mansfield and the late Kathleen A. Leyden; the cherished grandfather of: Michael Leyden, Michelle Coscia and her husband, David, Daniel Leyden, Scott Leyden, Brian Leyden and his wife, Amanda, Kristine Leyden, Christopher Otto, Kevin Otto, Sean Otto, Caitlin Otto and Ryan Otto, He was the adored great grandfather of Lilly Leyden and Jonah Coscia; the brother of Joan Derba of Lexington and the late Frederick V, Leyden, Alice Harney and Phyllis L. Miller. He was the brother in law of Marilyn B.“Marney” Leyden and is also lovingly survived by many loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, February 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., in the Vertuccio and Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107) Revere. His funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, February 7 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Grace Church, 59 Nichols St. Chelsea at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
