Two wins for EHS girls soccer
The Everett High girls soccer team posted a pair of victories this past week.
In a 7-1 win over across-the-Parkway-rival Chelsea last Tuesday, Yelsa Garica netted four goals for the Lady Crimson Tide, two of which occurred after the ball deflected off a Chelsea defender and Yelsa was in perfect position to control the ball and slot it past the Chelsea keeper.
Defender Tiffany Aguilar Pineda and Connie Paz-Hernandez assisted Garcia on her two goals.
Emilia Maria-Babcock, who played the first half in the net and kept a clean sheet, played in the field in the second half and scored a hat trick. Three different Lady Tide players, Garcia, Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, and Nicole Germano Lemus, provided assists on Emilia’s goals.
“Overall, the team played much better in the second half,” said EHS head coach Domenick Persuitte. “We were slow in the first half, but everything clicked in the second half. Ashley Health also stepped into the net for the second half and had a solid outing.”
Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide celebrated Senior Night in appropriate fashion with a 3-1 victory over Revere: Garcia played a role in all three goals, sending two balls into the back of the Lady Patriot net. Alondra Flores provided an assist on the first goal and captain Casey Martinez assisted on the second goal, delivering a nice pass with a solid strike down the middle of the field that split the Revere defense and placed the ball on Garcia’s foot.
Garcia then provided an assist on the third EHS goal, delivering Gisele Erazo a pass over the top of the Revere defense on which Gisele ran onto the ball, just poking it past the keeper around the 20-yard mark, with the ball rolling over the goalline.
“Other players who had a massive impact were Lavina Batista Simon and Tiffany Aguilar Pineda, playing in the CMD role, alongside senior Alondra Flores, who has been having a stellar season keeping the middle of the field under control,” said Persuitte.
“Emilia Maria-Babcock had a solid night in between the pipes, playing a high line so she came out to send balls over the top to Garcia and Erazo,” added Persuitte. “Emilia, just like every game she has played as a keeper, turns away almost every shot and is quick to come off her line to grab the ball.
“Mariana Rodrigues played well too, at the CAM position, controlling and distributing the ball to the wingers,” Persuitte continued. “Gabriela Lones Rivera stepped up and played well on the outside wing. Sofia Arana-Quintanilla played a lockdown defense on her side of the field, not allowing Revere to get by. Sofia Arana-Quintanilla played a solid game at her left-back position.
“Overall, the entire team came together, played extremely well, and stepped up to play and win for the seniors, who we are truly proud of and are going to miss,” said Persuitte. “Every single one of them brought something special to the table and their commitment to this program was something very special. This was a massive win.”
Persuitte and his crew, who stand at 6-7 on the season, need to win three of their final five games in order to attain the .500 record needed to qualify for the post-season state tournament. They were scheduled to take on Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) and will travel to Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday). They will host non-league rival Lowell Saturday at 10:00 at 7-Acre Park and travel to Somerville next Tuesday. They will conclude their regular season next Thursday at non-league opponent Beverly.
EHS boys soccer nips Chelsea, 2-1
The Everett High boys soccer team earned an important 2-1 victory at archrival Chelsea last Tuesday.
“We traveled to Chelsea and played a tough game against them,” said EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde. “We dominated possession very well and created multiple chances, but struggled to find the back of the net early on.”
However, the Crimson Tide broke the scoreless deadlock when senior midfielder Santiago Arredondo sent a through-ball to Luvens Hector, who ran onto the ball and slotted it home. Shortly thereafter, EHS captain Kareem Drissi sent a ball between Chelsea’s defensive line, splitting the Red Devils’ defense once again, and Luvens Hector beat the last defender to net his second goal of the night, bringing Luvens’s total to five goals on the season.
Chelsea scored a goal late in the second half and mounted a comeback effort, but the Tide’s defense was able to hold it down and seal the 2-1 win. EHS keeper Douglas Landaverde had a solid performance with three saves.
Last Thursday, Everett made the slightly-longer trip to Revere, the undefeated, first-place team in the Greater Boston League, whom the Tide had tied in their first meeting a few weeks ago. However, the Crimson Tide fell short in the rematch, 5-0.
“We were not able to get any momentum throughout this game,” said Landaverde. “Revere did well possessing the ball and getting our players out of position and beating us on the long ball. They were very successful and had a 4-0 lead at halftime.
“Throughout the second half, we did better connecting passes and moving up the field, but we were not successful at getting chances on-frame,”Landaverde continued. “We ended up losing 5-0, but a lot was learned from that day.”
The Tide, who now stand at 5-4-4 after dropping a 4-1 decision to Lynn English this past Monday, are in the final stretch of the regular season, with five games left on their schedule.
“We are looking forward to getting some more wins to solidify our ticket to the postseason tournament,” said Landaverde, whose squad needs four points (out of a possible 10 points) in order to achieve the .500 record needed to punch their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney.
The Tide are scheduled to host Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday) and will trek to Marblehead for a non-league matchup on Saturday at 10 a.m. They will entertain Somerville next Tuesday.
EHS field hockey defeats Gr. Lowell
The Everett High field hockey team earned a convincing 7-0 win over Greater Lowell last Monday at home.
Oliver Derozier, Ricardo Contreras Chacon, Stephano Orleus, Cephas Orleus, and Jonathan Scioletti scored the goals to propel the Crimson Tide to the victory.
Two days later on Wednesday, coach Nicola Jones and her crew traveled to Northeast Regional and battled to a hard-fought tie.
“Our defense held strong, with Anayah Susin, Luiza Velev, Jas Salvador, Isabella Lima, and Giovanna Edwards all making key contributions,” said Jones. “Midfielders Cephas Orleus, Stephano Orleus, Jasmin Thrower, and Allia Polynicealso played well, helping to generate scoring chances.”
This past Friday, Everett came up short in a tough, 1-0 loss at Malden. “It was a tightly- contested game that saw many players step up for our team,” said Jones. “Kenzie Portillo and Richardo Contreras Chacon led the way on offense, while the defensive line of Stephano Orleus, Jas Salvador, and Luiza Velev held down the net, stopping many scoring opportunities from Malden.
“Despite the loss and tie this past week, the team is still having a successful season,” noted Jones, whose squad stands at 6-4-1. “The players are working hard and enjoying the game, and they are looking forward to the final two weeks of the regular season.”
EHS cross country boys defeat Revere
The Everett High boys cross-country team observed Senior Day in fitting fashion with a victory over Revere on their home course at Rivergreen Park. The Tide are scheduled to face Medford today (Wednesday) and will compete in the GBL Meet next Wednesday at MacDonald Park in Medford.
EHS volleyball tops Lynn English
The Everett High girls volleyball team kept its hopes alive for a spot in the post-season state tournament with a 3-1 win over Greater Boston League rival Lynn English this past week.
“It was the second time in two weeks that we avenged an early-season loss,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “We need to win five of our last six matches to qualify, but we match up fairly well to everyone we have to play. There are no easy games on our schedule, and we have to battle for every point, but I am proud of the way we’ve climbed out of the hole we found ourselves in after dropping the first six games of the season.
“Playing meaningful games at the end of October tells you a ton about the character of this team. Digging ourselves out of holes is nothing new for us,” Finera added.
In the first set against Lynn English last Wednesday, the Lady Crimson Tide fell into an early hole, down 16-7, but aces from senior Ashley Seward and junior Nicole Damaceno made it a 20-19 game. Juliette Romboli, a junior outside hitter, had three kills, but the Tide lost the opener, 25-21.
In the second set, senior captain Victoria Rodrigues had three service points and three kills, Romboli had another three kills, and Damaceno served five in a row with the game on the line, powering Everett to a 25-23 win.
In the third set, junior Amanda Verteiro aced four of seven serves, Rodrigues had five service-points in a row, and Seward had two kills and an ace. Junior Clarice Alexis notched two kills and served the final two points in a 26-24 win.
In the fourth set, seniors Kayleigh McMahon and Tanessa Duvilaire led the way. Duvilaire came off the bench to provide a key spark, stuffing two blocks in addition to earning a pair of kills. McMahon was perfect serving and played excellent defense in the back row.
“Senior captain Sonia Flores, who is our libero, is out on the court for almost every play, doing whatever it takes to stop the other team’s offense. Sonia doesn’t get the stats that front row players get, but she is a very important player for us,” said Fineran.
“We are 5-9 on the season and 4-7 in the GBL,” Fineran added. “If we do make it to the tournament, it’ll be because our role players step up and our star players take charge. We don’t have much practice time left, but we know what we need to do. Now we just have to go out and do it on the court.”
Fneran and his crew took on Somerville yesterday (Tuesday) and will go to Medford today (Wednesday). They will host Lowell tomorrow (Thursday) and will travel to Revere next Monday, to Lawrence next Wednesday, and to Saugus next Friday for the season finale.
