Senator Sal DiDomenico and his Chief of Staff, Christie Getto Young, were honored at an event by the Mass Reads Coalition and presented with awards for helping pass Massachusetts’ new evidence-based literacy standards. This summer, Governor Maura Healey signed Senator Sal N. DiDomenico’s landmark literacy legislation into law. This new law will transform how the Commonwealth teaches children to read to ensure every student learns this essential skill.
“I am honored to receive this award alongside my chief of staff, and it was a joy to celebrate with the advocates, parents, educators, and experts who fought for years to make these needed literacy changes a reality,” said Senator Sal N. DiDomenico, Senate Chair of the Conference Committee and the lead Senate bill sponsor. “I could not have gotten this bill passed without Christie, who worked tirelessly to draft this bill, lead it through the legislative process, and work out the final details in the conference committee. This new law will ensure all our students learn the essential skills of reading and writing, and early literacy curriculum will be evidenced based in every community throughout the Commonwealth.”
Mass Reads is a powerful statewide coalition of educators, parents, literacy experts, and policy advocates, driving the movement to ensure every child in Massachusetts reads on grade level. State Representative Simon Cataldo and State Representative Danillo A. Sena, who lead on this bill in the House, were also recognized at the event.
