Everett Honors Fallen Firefighters at Annual Memorial Ceremony

On Sunday, June 14, the City of Everett joined the Everett Fire Department and the Everett Fireman’s Relief Association for the annual Everett Firefighters Memorial, honoring firefighters who have passed away and recognizing their service and sacrifice.

The Everett Fireman’s Relief Association has long played an important role in supporting firefighters, preserving the department’s history, and strengthening the bond between the fire service and the community.

Led by Everett Fire Captain Derek Perretti, the ceremony included opening and closing prayers from Bishop Robert Brown and remarks from Fire Chief Joseph Hickey, Mayor Robert J. Van Campen, State Senator Sal DiDomenico and State Representative Joe McGonagle. Musical performances by the Everett High School Choir and Band accompanied the program.

“A firefighter’s legacy is not measured only by years of service, but by the lives touched along the way—family members, friends, fellow firefighters, and the countless residents who benefited from their commitment, often without ever knowing their names,” said Mayor Robert J. Van Campen. “From putting out devastating fires to helping a neighbor open up their car, firefighters exemplify what public service is all about. We remember those that have passed away and thank the countless firefighters who continue to run towards danger so others don’t have to.”

As part of the ceremony, a roll call honored firefighters who passed away during the past year: Deputy Chief Lawrence F. Mazzie and Lieutenant Thomas J. Green. Retired firefighter Joseph “Jay” A. Andreotti and active-duty firefighter Paul Messana, who lost his battle with cancer, were also remembered.

“We join together on this solemn day to remember the firefighters we have lost and the lasting impact they had on this department and our community,” said Fire Chief Joseph Hickey. “Today, we honor their service, reflect on their sacrifice, and ensure their memories continue to live on within the Everett Fire Department.”

Following the roll call, members of IAFF Local 143 placed memorial wreaths in honor of the fallen. The ceremony concluded with an invitation for attendees to gather inside the Ferry Street Fire Station.

Firefighter Memorial Sunday is observed across Massachusetts on the second Sunday of June each year to honor departed firefighters and reflect on the sacrifices they made in service to their communities. The Everett Fire Department proudly continues this tradition, ensuring the dedication, courage, and legacy of its firefighters are never forgotten.
