The Everett High girls track team claimed their first triumph of the season with a 65-53 victory over Medford on Monday.
"This was a nice victory and it was good for the girls to get that first win," said EHS head coach Shelanda Irish.
A trio of Lady Crimson Tide led the way for Irish’s squad with double victories in their events. Maeve Kernan triumphed in both the two mile and mile in times of 14:29 and 6:38; Katie Steeves sped to victory in the 400 in 1:09.9 and landed the top triple jump with a personal record (PR) of 27-2; and Sashae Walls led the field in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 1:29.5 and with a high jump of 4-2.
Sashae also garnered a second in the 200 dash in 29.0 to finish with 13 points on the day, while Steeves took a third in that event in 29.2 to give her 11 points.
The other first place finisher for Everett was Darryl Colson with a discus throw of 75-9.
A number of Lady Crimson Tide came through with fine second place performances to add an important three points to the Everett score sheet: Jessica Mangan in the two mile in 15:06 and the mile in 6:52; Guerdie Valmont in the 100 dash in 14.0; Delmis Urquiza in the 800 in 2:58.7 and the shotput with a toss of 20-7; and Serina Welch in the 400 in 1:10.8.
Earning single points for their third place finishes were: Welch with a long jump of 10-6.5; Melissa Michel with a PR of 15:52 in the two mile; Brenda Sant Ana in the 800 in 3:05.6; Angel Louis Jean in the shot with a heave of 15-10.5; and Bebhinn Kernan with a discus throw of 44-1.
The week before, the girls dropped a 64-55 decision to St. Mary’s of Lynn. Steeves captured three events, the 200, the 400 and the long jump, while also adding a third in the triple jump. Urquiza won the 800 and Colson took the 100 high hurdles;
Adding second place finishes were Colson in the discus; Valmont in the 100 dash; Mangan in the mile;
Chipping in with third place efforts were Naeva Richemond in the 100 dash; Valmont in the 200 dash; Sant Ana in the 800; Colson in the shotput; and Bebhinn Kernan in the discus.
The girls will meet Lynn Classical today (Wednesday). Steeves will represent Everett at the State Coaches Meet Saturday in Somerville in the 200 dash.
