Baseball team set to open 2010 season

Although he has only four seniors returning from his 2009 team that compiled a sterling 14-6 record last year, EHS head baseball coach Joe Marchese said his team is ready to go for the 2010 campaign.

“We have a young team, but we’ve been working hard during the off season and the team is excited about the coming year,” said the coach, whose squad opened its season yesterday (Tuesday) at Xaverian.

The Crimson Tide will be led by a trio of senior captains: Second baseman Frank Cafarella, first baseman Dan Concannon, and DH Mike Russo, who earned GBL all star honors last year.

Other key returnees are sophomore and GBL all star catcher Chris McCarthy, junior southpaw Joe Saia, senior outfielder Nick McCarthy, and junior righthander Shaun McGrath, who was set to earn the season starting nod against Xaverian yesterday.

Sophomore Matt Cafarella will be the starting shortstop, where he will be hoping to turn double plays with older brother Frank. Matt Costello figures to see a lot of action on the mound in relief.

After the Xaverian contest, Marchese and crew will host Marblehead tomorrow and Wilmington on Monday.
