Nine women’s teams participated in the Seventh Annual Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Glendale Park.
The tournament is a fundraiser, and it is held in honor of Kim Nicolo, a cancer survivor, and the late Carol Sikora, who passed away in 2021 after a courageous battle against the disease.
“Usually, we hold this tournament in September, but this year we decided to do it in August because my birthday and Peter Sikora’s mother’s [Carol Sikora] birthday is August 23, so we figured this would be a great weekend to host it,” said Kim.
Kim and Peter credited the assistance of board members Kristin Bairos, Paul Leone, one of the tournament’s umpires, and Paul Dobbins.
“Proceeds from the tournament go to families in the community that are in need,” noted Kim. “We donate to various charities.”
An Everett resident and a 1991 graduate of Everett High School, Kim, who said she has been cancer free for seven years, is in her 23rd year as a paraprofessional at the Madeline English School. Kim recalled the tremendous support she received from her colleagues at the school during her health battle. “They were amazing, a huge source of support. They were awesome,” said Kim.
