EHS flag football splits two contests

The Everett High flag football team continues to play impressively in its first season under the direction of head coach Duane Sigsbury.

The Crimson Tide split its two contests last week, rolling to a 28-0 victory over Chelsea and dropping a 12-0 decision to Bishop Fenwick.

In the Chelsea victory, “Senior Juliette Romboli was outstanding at quarterback, both throwing and catching touchdowns,” said Sigsbury. “Senior Amanda Vertiero also scored a touchdown and threw for another.

“Senior Katherine Venegas shone on defense with a couple of pulled flag sacks and an interception,” continued Sigsbury. “Sophomore Isabell Mitrano had some great runs and pulled some great flags all night.  Senior Kathleen De Souza was all over the field and had a huge run on a reverse to set up a touchdown.

“Freshman Schneide Pierre was once again our dominant rush player on defense, forcing the other teams into fast throws that helped us get some big stops,” Sigsbury added.

The Tide, who now stand at 5-5 on the season, were scheduled to meet Winthrop and Arlington Catholic yesterday (Tuesday) in Salem and will make the long trek to Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury next Thursday (May 21) to face St. Mary’s of Lynn and Essex Tech.

EHS softball celebrates Sr. Day with win

The Everett High softball team celebrated Senior Day in appropriate fashion with a 13-1 victory over Chelsea this past Monday at Glendale Park.

The Crimson Tide broke open a 3-1 ballgame with five runs in the third inning, powered by a three-run home run by Juliette Romboli and a two-run roundtripper by McKenzie Rivera.

Everett added three more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Bianca Moran-Leal and Rivera and an RBI base hit by Victoria Cutler.  The Tide tacked on two more in the fifth on a two-RBI base hit by Kyleigh Ridlon to end the game via the mercy rule.

Victoria Cutler went all five innings in the circle, allowing five hits and walking seven, to earn the “W.” Arianna Osorio-Bonilla turned in a nice day at the plate, scoring the first Everett run in the first after drawing a walk and then doubling home two teammates in the second.

“The girls came out with energy right away and stayed aggressive at the plate all game,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “Juliette and McKenzie both came through with huge home runs, and we had contributions up and down the lineup.

“Defensively, we made a lot of solid plays behind Victoria and stayed focused even with runners on base. Olivia made some big plays at short, Juliette tracked down key fly balls in center, and Kyleigh made plays at first to help us get out of innings. Overall, it was a great win on a special night for our seniors.”

In a contest at Revere last Monday, the Tide came out on the short end of a 14-7 decision. Everett jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Arianna Osorio-Bonilla led off with a double. After Arianna moved to third on a delayed steal and Lindsey Sylva walked, Kyleigh Ridlon smacked a base hit up the middle knocking in Osorio-Bonilla.

Juliette Romboli walked and a passed ball allowed the runners to advance.  Bianca Moran-Leal then reached first on a dropped third strike and the runners scored on an overthrow at first.

Revere got one back in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead in the second with four runs thanks to two hits and four walks. Revere added three more markers in the fourth behind a double, three more free passses to first, and an error to make it 8-4.

The Tide scored a run in the sixth when Juliette Romboli doubled and eventually scored on an error. However, Revere put the game away in their sixth with six runs, aided primarily by walks and errors.

Everett added two runs in the seventh on three walks and an error for the 14-7 finale.

“We gave them too many free bases,” said Poste-Schiavo. “We walked a lot of hitters and made errors that turned into big innings for them. We had some good moments offensively, but we didn’t put enough pressure on consistently.”

In their other contests this past week, the Tide defeated Lynn English last Wednesday, 27-12, but fell to Watertown, 20-8.

“We had beaten Watertown, 9-7, the week before, but they came out as a completely different hitting team this time around,” said Poste-Schiavo. “They were aggressive at the plate and put the ball in play all game. We had some good at-bats and still managed to score runs, but we gave them too many extra opportunities with walks and errors, and that turned into big innings for them. We know we need to play cleaner defensively and limit giving them free bases.”

Everett, which stands at 8-7 on the season, needs two wins in its final five games to qualify for the post-season state tourney. They were scheduled to meet Medford yesterday (Tuesday). They will travel to Winthrop tomorrow (Thursday), host Lynn Classical next Monday, trek to Somerville next Wednesday, and entertain Cambridge next Friday (May 22) in the season finale.

EHS boys volleyball fights hard in two matches

Although the Everett High boys volleyball team came up short in its two matches this past week with Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Lynn English and Someville, EHS head coach Michael Fineran was pleased with his team’s effort.

“Both Lynn English and Somerville are having strong seasons,” said Fineran. “They each had the height advantage over us. We hung in as well as we could, but ultimately could not pull off an upset.”

In the contest at Lynn English last Monday, the Crimson Tide were playing without the services of senior captain Christian Ramirez, but fellow senior Gustavo Neto filled in as libero and made a number of impressive digs throughout the match.

Neto also was perfect behind the line serving, as was senior Gustavo Franca, who has not missed all season. Seniors Noel Lopez Ardon and Victor Rosa hit in each of their six and seven serves, respectively.

Freshman Miguel Rodovanski was eight-for-eight with his serves and added two kills from the middle hitter position. Everett’s other middle, Donart Maksutaj, was six-for-six serving with a block. Senior Matheus Teixeira Fernades was 12-for-13 serving with two aces and a team-high eight kills, including five in the competitive third set, which Everett  lost, 25-23.

In last Wednesday’s match with Somerville, Ramirez was back on the floor, but the Tide played without Maksutaj, which hurt Everett’s front-row presence against Somerville’s tall hitters.

Once again, Matheus Teixeira Fernandes was the Tide’s offensive leader, successfully delivering nine-of-10 serves with another two aces and nine kills. Matheus has tallied 122 kills and 24 aces so far this season.

Junior Akush Gurung was 11-for-12 serving and added six kills. Akush is second on the team with 58 kills. Rodovanski was eight-for-nine with two kills, and senior Isaque Agostinho was three-for -three and added two kills.

Sophomore Danilo Teixeira Fernandes, who is second on the team in aces with 19 (five behind his brother) had an ace in each match. Junior Anthoid Khanal was three-for-three serving with an ace in the hard-fought third set in which the Tide fell just short, 25-23.

“We’re close in some sets and we keep fighting to the end,” said Fineran. “Ultimately, we did not do enough, well enough to earn the win. We have four wins with five more matches to go. None of them will be easy, but we will keep battling to the end. We want to end on a high note and send our seniors off the right way.”

Fineran and his crew, who were scheduled to host first-place Revere this past Monday, will travel to Medford today (Wednesday) and then will entertain Malden next Monday in a match that will be highlighted by Senior Night festivities. They will make the short trek to Chelsea next Wednesday and make the longer bus ride to Lawrence next Friday (May 22) for their season finale.

EHS girls lacrosse is battling hard

Although the Everett High girls lacrosse team “faced a challenging stretch of three games in three days this past week, the girls are continuing to show resilience, growth, and determination throughout each contest,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones.

In a contest with Saugus last Wednesday, the Crimson Tide fell behind early and never quite recovered in an 18–1 loss.

Despite the score, there were several bright spots for Everett, with strong efforts from Nicole Damaceno, Amanda Verteiro, Isabela Bicalho, MariaJose Cardenas, and Melissa Meireles throughout the game.

A highlight of the day was Isabella Aguirre Jimenez scoring her first-ever varsity goal, marking an exciting milestone for the team.

Everett took on Medford the following day and came up on the short end of a 17–2 decision in another hard-fought matchup. Damaceno and Verteiro contributed offensively, while Lindsey Cherichel-Paul, Samantha Pacheco Lemus, and Allia Polynice showed strong effort and determination throughout the game as the team continued to battle until the final whistle.

The strongest showing of the week came in last Wednesday’s match with Lowell. “Although we came up short, 14–6, the girls played one of their best and most complete games of the season,” said Jones. “The team moved the ball seamlessly on offense with smart, clean passes and strong communication across the field. Goalkeeper Briana Sequeira came up with several impressive saves to keep us competitive throughout the game, while Ildha Fevrier, Cherichel-Paul, and Polynice anchored the defense with aggressive and disciplined play.

“The midfield and attack units kept constant pressure on Lowell from start to finish, refusing to let missed opportunities slow them down,” Jones continued. “Damaceno, Verteiro, Aguirre Jimenez, Saline Duck, and Laura Alves Dos Santos all made standout plays offensively.  Verteiro, Meireles, and Aguirre Jimenez combined to put six goals on the board.

“Closing out a demanding three-day game streak, the entire team showed tremendous grit, effort, and determination,” Jones added. “I am so incredibly proud of the amazing student-athletes who comprise this team. We are all looking forward to a well-earned stretch of rest before heading into our final two games of the season next week during which we will say goodbye to our 13 amazing seniors.”

Jones and her crew will host Malden tomorrow (Thursday) and Revere on Friday to conclude their 2026 season.

Nice win for EHS girls tennis

The Everett High girls tennis team turned in a performance that head coach Courtney Meninger termed “outstanding tennis against a solid Lynn English squad” to earn a 5-0 victory over their Greater Boston League rival this past Friday.

Sophomore Abby Falkowski and senior Luna Sepulveda led the way at second doubles with a dominant victory in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Trina Le at second singles added another point for the Tide with a strong 6-3, 6-1 win, followed by junior Brigitte Parada’s convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles.

With the match already secured, the final two contests went into exciting third-set tiebreakers. Junior Thy Phanhang battled through the third singles slot to earn the Tide’s fourth win, taking the match 6-2, 3-6, before winning the tiebreaker 7-4. Rounding out the sweep were the first doubles duo of juniors Sophia Hernandez and Lizzy Castro, who edged their Lady Bulldog counterparts in a thrilling match, winning 6-3, 5-7, and 15-13 in the deciding third set.

“It was a big win for our team and we hope to carry that momentum into the final week of the season,” said Meninger, whose squad was scheduled to travel to Lynn Classical yesterday (Tuesday), host Revere today (Wednesday), and travel to Peabody tomorrow (Thursday) before entertaining Mystic Valley next Monday in the season finale.
