EHS boys volleyball defeats Lynn Tech

The Everett High boys volleyball team earned its fourth win of the season with a 3-0 victory over non-league opponent Lynn Tech this past Friday.

“This was our most complete, full-team effort of the season,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “It felt especially good to get the win after falling to Chelsea 3-1 on Monday and Lynn Classical 3-0 Wednesday.

“We had defeated Lynn Tech on the road a couple of weeks ago, 3-1, but the sets were close and our roster was a bit different, so we expected it to be another battle,” noted Fineran.

The first set showed right away that Everett would need to step up its game. Senior outside hitter Matheus Fernandes had two aces to cut into an early Tech lead, making it 10-9. His brother, sophomore setter Danilo Teixeira Fernandes, followed that with an ace of his own to give Everett a 14-13 lead.

Junior Akush Gurung was next up and served eight in a row with two aces to move the Tide into a 22-17 advantage, but Tech went on a run of its  own to tie matters at 24-24.

However, senior setter Gustavo Franca served the final two points for a crucial 26-24 win. Junior middle Donart Maksutaj had a kill and three blocks in the set on his way to three kills and five blocks for the match. Freshman Miguel Rodovanski filled in as the other middle hitter and had six kills and two blocks in the match.

The second set was just as tight, Danilo Teixeira Fernandes had another ace and two kills, his brother Matheus had three aces and five of his game-high 12 kills, and senior captain Victor Rosa had an ace and a kill en route to a 25-21 win.

Rosa was effective all match, finishing eight for nine serving with three aces and five kills from the right side. Everett’s other senior captain, libero Christian Ramirez, returned to action after missing the matches against Chelsea and Lynn Classical and was six for six serving with two aces.

“We finished the match with one of our best sets of the year, keeping the pressure up to take away any chance of a comeback,” said Fineran.

Senior Gustavo Neto set the tone on defense, neutralizing Lynn Tech’s crafty servers and digging their best attacks. Three serves from Maksutaj, who delivered  16 serves without a miss, gave Everett an early 8-5 lead. Rosa had three serves, an ace, and three kills to expand the Tide’s advantage to 12-6.

The Teixeira Fernandes brothers combined for five kills, and Rodovanski had two kills and a block in the 25-15 win.

“We’ve had different people in and out of the lineup this season for various reasons, and players would be strong one day and struggle the next,” Fineran said. “This was the first time that we were all clicking throughout the match, and the results speak for themselves.”

Fineran and his crew were scheduled to travel to Greater Boston League (GBL) foe Lynn English this past Monday and will host GBL rivals Somerville today (Wednesday) and Revere next Monday.

Mixed bag for EHS softball team

It was a mixed bag for the Everett High softball team, which won two of its five contests this past week.

The victories came vs. Malden (27-9) last Wednesday and Watertown (9-7) last Friday, with the losses coming to Cambridge (14-13) last Tuesday, Triton (11-0) this past Saturday, and Revere (14-7) this past Monday.

In the runaway triumph vs. Malden, a big second inning, keyed by a two-run double by Olivia Dresser and an RBI double by Kyleigh Ridlon, propelled the Tide into a 7-2 advantage.

Everett scored five runs in the fourth with a two-out rally. Bianca Moran-Leal delivered two teammates with a base hit, as did Meghan Comerford with a two-RBI double. Juliette Romboli also accounted for an RBI with a base hit that scored Ridlon, who had started the rally with a base hit.

Doubles by Dresser and Ridlon and an RBI base hit by Moran-Leal produced two more runs in the fifth, setting the stage for a 13-run Everett outburst in the sixth that  was aided by walks and errors.

“We swung the bats well in the second inning and took advantage of some opportunities,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “We were not trying to run the score up — just played the game the right way. Credit to Malden, they kept battling and put the ball in play. Our starting pitcher, Victoria Cutler, worked through some tough spots, and Mia Allen came in and did a great job shutting things down at the end. We had some nice defensive plays, but we also made mistakes we still need to clean up.”

In Friday’s 9-7 triumph over Watertown, the Tide trailed through the early innings after spotting Watertown a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Ridlon had a hit and an RBI in the top of the first, and Arianna Osorio-Bonilla delivered a two-run double and then stole home (on a delayed steal) to account for three runs in the second that made the score 4-4.

Everett took a 7-5 lead in the third thanks to an RBI base hit by Mckenzie Rivers and Watertown errors, and the Tide added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Mia Allen and another in the fifth on an RBI double by Osotio-Bonilla that brought in Morgan Salvi, who had walked.

“We gave them too many runs with walks and errors, but the girls kept fighting,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Mia Allen stuck it out for all seven innings, and we got some big hits when we needed them. Arianna, Kyleigh, and Mia’s bats were consistent this game which helped us when runners were on.”

Last Tuesday’s loss 14-13 to Cambridge was the continuation of a game that had been halted by rain at the start of the season with Everett leading 9-6 in the third inning. The Tide held a 13-12 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but Cambridge scored two runs, with the game-winner coming across on an error.

As for Saturday’s 11-0 loss at non-league opponent Triton, poor fielding plagued the Crimson Tide, who managed only five hits on the day.

“We just didn’t play our best,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Too many of their runs came from our errors, and that’s tough knowing we’re better than that. We need to clean things up and be ready to go to the next game. We also did not have quality at bats.”

After dropping a 14-7 decision at Revere this past Monday, Poste-Schiavo and her crew stand at 6-6 overall and 5-4 in the GBL. They will host Lynn English today (Wednesday) and then travel to Watertown on Saturday morning. They will entertain Chelsea next Monday and Medford next Wednesday.

EHS flag football continues to improve

Although the Everett High flag football team came up short in its contests with Revere and Pentucket last week, head coach Duane Sigsbury saw a number of good signs from his team, which is in the inaugural season of the flag football program at EHS.

“The team played great and has gotten so much better since the beginning of the year,” said Sigsbury. “Kathleen De Souza played quarterback and was great playing the position for the first time. Ashley Aguilar also stepped up and has played center and every snap has been perfect.

“After the two losses last week, we’re looking forward to getting back to our winning ways in two big games vs. Bishop Fenwick and Chelsea on Cinco De Mayo in Winthrop,” said Sigsbury, whose squad stands at 4-4.

The Tide will trek to Salem’s Bertram Field next Tuesday evening to face Winthrop  and Arlington Catholic.

EHS girls lacrosse tops Malden, 11-9

The Everett High girls lacrosse team posted an exciting 11-9 victory over Malden last Tuesday. The Crimson Tide attack was powered by strong offensive performances from Amanda Verteiro, Nicole Damaceno, and Isabela Bicalho, while Laura Alves added a milestone moment with her first varsity goal.

Defensively, Bevena Milfort, Fanny Lopez-Portillo, and Lindsey Cherichel-Paul shone for the Tide and goalie Briana Sequeira had a number of fantastic saves, leading the team from the net.

On Thursday, Everett battled Revere in a tough matchup, falling just short in a 5–4 loss. The Tide came out strong with a 3–0 lead in the first quarter, but Revere rallied in a tightly-contested game. Everett’s goals came from Amanda Verteiro, Nicole Damaceno, and senior Saline Duck, who netted  the first goal of her career.

“Despite the setback, the team remains focused as we head into the second-to-last full week of the season,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. The Crimson Tide were scheduled to play at Saugus this past Monday and host Medford yesterday (Tuesday). They will make the long trek to Lowell today (Wednesday).
