Girls lacrosse edges Revere
The Everett High girls lacrosse team posted its second victory of the season with a hard-fought 5-4 triumph over Revere.
The win proved to be a bright spot in a difficult stretch of games over the past two weeks for the Lady Crimson Tide, who came up short in contests with Cambridge Rindge & Latin, Medford, Lowell, and Somerville.
“Despite the results, the players showed strong effort and determination throughout,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. “Captains Nicola Damaceno, Amanda Verteiro, and Lindsey Cherichel-Paul led by example on and off the field, setting a high standard with resilience and grit.
“Goalie Briana Sequeira stood out with several impressive saves, never backing down under constant pressure,” Jones continued. “Second goalie Allia Polynice also stepped up, pushing beyond her comfort zone to contribute as a field player on defense.
“In midfield, Isabela Bichalho and MariaJose Cardenas worked tirelessly, covering the whole field and stepping up defensively when needed,” Jones added. “Isabella Aguirre Jimenez and Jacky Ramos made key contributions as well. Isabella filled in at midfield, while Jacky excelled on defense.
“Although the midseason stretch was frustrating, the team’s effort, adaptability, and leadership stayed strong,” Jones said. “With three weeks left in the season, they remain positive, keep their heads up, compete hard, and support one another.”
The Tide were scheduled to play at Malden yesterday (Tuesday) and will travel to Revere this evening (Wednesday). Next week they will play at Saugus on Monday, host Medford on Tuesday, and travel to Lowell on Wednesday.
EHS softball team tops Somerville
The Everett High softball team got back on the winning track with a 16-3 victory over Somerville this past Monday at Glendale Park.
Trailing 2-1 after two frames, the Lady Crimson Tide exploded for eight runs in the third and never looked back. Key hits in the rally included a three-run homer by Mia Allen, an RBI double by Olivia Dresser, RBI base hits by Kyleigh Ridlon and Bianca Moran-Leal, and a two-RBI base hit by Arianna Osorio-Bonilla.
Everett put the game away in the fourth, tacking on another seven runs. RBI doubles by Meghan Comerford, Ridlon, and Lindsey Sylva; a two-RBI base hit by Dresser; and an RBI-base hit by Juliette Romboli did most of the damage for the Tide.
Allen picked up the win, tossing four innings in which Mia allowed only one hit and one earned run while striking out seven Lady Highlanders. Victoria Cutler came on for the fifth frame (the contest was called after five innings because of the mercy rule), allowing no hits and fanning one.
Allen helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 (single, double, HR) with four RBI. Arianna Osorio-Bonilla went 2-for-3 (single and double) with two RBI; Olivia Dresser was 2-for-2 (single, triple) and drove in three runs; and Bianca Moran-Leal had two hits and two ribbies.
“After a rough start, we finally played our game,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “Mia did a great job on the mound and had a big day at the plate, and we just kept the bats going. Victoria came in and finished it off for us. It was a good win — we just need to be a little cleaner early on.”
The Crimson Tide came up short in its contests last week with Greater Boston League rivals Medford and Lynn Classical.
In the encounter at Medford last Tuesday, a 24-3 loss for the Lady Crimson Tide, the Lady Mustangs took control from the outset, scoring nine runs in the first inning and 12 more in the second. “Medford hit the ball well in the first inning,” said Poste-Schiavo. “However, we also gave away runs by holding the ball and not making the right plays. In the second inning, they scored their runs with walks, errors, and hits.”
Everett got on the board in the third with three runs. Bianca Moran-Leal walked. With one out, Osorio-Bonilla singled to left field and advanced to second on an error. Both scored on a hit by Allen, and Allen herself eventually scored.
“We knew Medford was going to come out swinging, and they did their job at the plate,” said Poste-Schiavo. “But this one comes down to us. We made too many mental mistakes and gave away runs we can’t afford to. That’s the difference in a tough loss like this. When we settled down it was too late to catch up. Hopefully, when we see them again we will play to the potential we know how.”
Two days later, the Tide dropped a 12-7 decision at Lynn Classical. Everett struck first with a pair of runs in the second thanks to an RBI base hit by McKenzie Rivera and a bases-loaded walk by Comerford, but Classical responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Everett tied the game with three markers in the third. After Dresser led off with a base hit and moved to second on a ground-out, Ridlon delivered Dresser with a base hit. After successful bunts by Rivera and Moran-Leal, Osorio-Bonilla knocked in Ridlon and Rivera with a base hit to make it 5-5.
Everett forged ahead with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Classical put the game away with a six-run rally in the fifth on four hits and three errors.
“We threw the ball around too much,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Offensively, we did a lot of good things — put the ball in play, moved runners, and stayed competitive through the middle innings. Defensively, we just gave them too many extra opportunities. Mia battled for us in the circle, and we had moments where we showed what we’re capable of, but we need to clean up the mental mistakes and be more consistent if we want to come out on the winning side.”
Everett, which now stands at 4-3 on the season, has a busy week with six games in nine days: The Tide were scheduled to meet Cambridge yesterday (Tuesday); travel to Malden today (Wednesday); entertain Watertown on Friday; trek to Triton Saturday morning; travel to Revere next Monday; and return home to host Lynn English next Wednesday.
Two victories for girls tennis
The Everett High girls tennis team enjoyed a successful week during the vacation break with a pair of victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Lynn Classical and Lynn English.
On Tuesday, the team hosted a tough Lynn Classical squad and came away with a 4-1 victory. At first singles, Brigette Parada fought through a tough three-set match, dropping the first set 3-6, bouncing back with a dominant 6-0 second set, and ultimately falling 2-6 in the third.
Trina Le picked up an important win at second singles, rallying after a 2-6 first set to force a third and closing it out, 6-4. Junior Thy Phanhang was in control at third singles, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles play, Sophia Hernandez and Lizzy Castro were dominant at first doubles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Luna Sepulveda and Ashley Pineda followed with a strong 6-1, 6-0 win at second doubles to help seal the match.
“The win was especially meaningful against a Lynn Classical team that has traditionally been a tough opponent,” said EHS coach Courtney Meninger.
The Tide stayed hot on Wednesday, sweeping Lynn English 5-0 in cold, windy conditions. With rain on the way, matches were shortened to pro sets.
Parada led off with a convincing 10-1 win at first singles. Le battled in a close match at second singles, coming out on top, 11-9. Phanhang delivered the most exciting match of the day, grinding out a 10-8 win at third singles.
Hernandez and Castro picked up their second win of the week with a 10-6 result at first doubles, while Amelia McNally and Abby Falkowski closed things out with a 10-4 win at second doubles.
“It is great to see the girls start to play like I know they can and to carry all the hard work they put in during practice to the matches,” said Meninger. “I hope that we carry this momentum into the second half of the season.”
Boys volleyball defeats Medford
The Everett High boys volleyball team turned on one of its best performances of the season to earn a 3-1 victory over Greater Boston League rival Medford last Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide started off strong, with junior outside hitter Adam Bousbaa aceing twice in a string of six serves that gave the Tide a 13-7 lead. Adam added three kills in the set, as did junior middle Donart Maksutaj. Senior Isaque Agostinho had four serves that pushed the lead to 19-9, en route to a 25-16 win.
Bousbaa had four service points and three more kills in the second set. Junior Akush Gurung had two kills. Senior captain Christian Ramirez had two aces, and senior Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had six kills in the 25-18 win.
Teixeira Fernandes and Bousbaa each had five kills in the third set, and sophomore Danilo Teixieira Fernandes served four in a row to give Everett the lead, 23-22, but the Tide ended up dropping the set 26-24.
However, Everett was not going to let this one get away. In the fourth set, Bousbaa had four kills and a block, Maksutaj had two kills and a block, and Agostinho and Gurung each had kills as Everett prevailed 25-20.
“I liked how we responded in the fourth set,” said Fineran. We got contributions from freshman Miguel Rodovansky, junior Samir Dervisevic, senior Gustavo Neto, and captain Victor Rosa.
“We have a deep squad, so getting people playing time can be a challenge. I’ve asked players to step up and play positions they aren’t always used to,” Fineran continued. “Rosa, Gurung, and Rodovansky have all played middle front, even though that is not their natural position. They have made the best of it and given it their all, which is all I can ask.”
Fineran and his crew, who stand at 3-7 at the midpoint of the season after a loss to Malden last Wednesday, were scheduled to meet Chelsea this past Monday. They will host Lynn Classical today (Wednesday) and Lynn Tech on Friday.
Next week they will travel to Lynn English on Monday and entertain Revere next Wednesday.

“Junior Ashley Heath has played great at cornerback and senior Kathleen DeSouza has played great on both sides of the ball. Junior Nicaea Legal has scored a touchdown in every game, Sophomore Julianna Rivera is a force on both sides of the ball. “We play two games this week and the girls are looking forward to both games,” added Sigsbury, whose squad stands at 4-2. “The team is coming together and really learning how to play the game as a unit. It’s been a lot of fun.”
