EHS softball defeats GBL foes English, Chelsea

The Everett High softball team’s bats exploded to propel the Lady Crimson Tide to a pair of victories last week over Greater Boston League rivals Lynn English and Chelsea.

In a 24-11 victory over English last Monday, Everett was unable to shake the pesky Lady Bulldogs until the sixth, when the Tide erupted for nine runs to break open what had been a 15-11 contest and end the game via the mercy rule.

Victoria Cutler tossed all six innings for Everett in which Victoria allowed only four hits and struck out three. However, 10 bases-on-balls allowed English to tally nine earned runs.

The Tide grabbed a 5-0 led in the top of the first thanks primarily to four walks, a number of passed balls, an error, and a base hit by Lindsey Sylva that turned into a triple, but the Lady Bulldogs responded with five of their own in the bottom of the frame with a similar scenario of walks, errors, and one hit.

Everett posted four runs in the second, with the key blow coming on a three-run homer by Juliette Romboli that cleared the fence.

The Tide tacked on five more in the third with a two-out rally highlighted by McKenzie Rivera’s two-run double. Everett’s defense then came through in the bottom of the inning to quell a one-out, bases-loaded threat by English. Third baseman Meghan Comerford grabbed a grounder and fired home to catcher Arianna Osorio-Bonilla for the second out and shortstop Olivia Dresser made the final out.

Everett appeared to be cruising at that point with a 14-5 lead, but after a 1-2-3

inning in the top of the fourth, English rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning to draw within 14-11.

Everett added a solo tally in the fifth when Breann Jasmin reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI base hit by Bianca Moran-Leal. The Tide defense and Cutler once again faced a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth, but Dresser caught a pop-up to end the threat.

That set the stage for Everett to finally put a leash on the Bulldogs in the sixth with a nine-run outburst that was keyed by an RBI-double by Jasmin, a two-RBI base hit by Osorio-Bonilla, an RBI-base hit by Dresser, and a two-RBI hit by Romboli. Cutler then set down English in the bottom of the inning to end the game thanks to the 10-run rule at 24-11.

“Victoria really gave us everything she had,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste. “Early on, when they were hitting the ball, we struggled a bit to settle in, but I’m proud of how the team found its groove as the game went on. We faced some adversity when a player had to leave with a sprained ankle, and we had to move people around and make adjustments on the fly. The response was great to see. We got big hits from Ariana Osorio-Bonilla, Olivia Dresser, Juliette Romboli, McKenzie Rivera, Bianca Moran-Leal, and Lindsey Sylva — everyone stepped up when we needed it.”

Two days later the Tide ended another contest thanks to the mercy rule with a 27-1 win over a Chelsea squad that entered the game with a 3-1 record, with the lone loss coming to Revere in a closely-contested game, 4-1.

The Tide took control from the outset, scoring five runs in the top of the first, nine in the second, six in the third, four in the fourth, and three more in the fifth. Mia Allen, who had been injured on a line drive two games ago, started and tossed two innings in which Mia struck out four, allowed no hits, and no earned runs. Cutler came in for the final three frames and pitched impressively, allowing just three hits and no earned runs while fanning two and walking none.

Osorio-Bonilla set the tone for the game when she led off with a home run. Arianna also started the big rally in the second with a lead-off triple (her first of two on the day) and later in the inning delivered a two-RBI base hit. She also drew two walks and threw out a Chelsea runner at second on an attempted steal.

All of the Everett lineup contributed to the offense. Among those contributing RBI hits were Kyleigh Ridlon, McKenzie Rivera, Mia Allen, Meghan Comerford, Olivia Dresser, and Juliette Romboli.

“We came out swinging and set the tone right away,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Arianna’s leadoff home run got us going and the bats stayed hot from there. I thought we did a good job being patient and taking advantage of what they gave us. Mia gave us a solid start in the circle, and Victoria came in and finished it off strong. Defensively, we made the plays we needed to.”

The Tide have a pair of key games on tap this week against tough GBL foes to start a busy stretch of five games in 10 days. They took on first-place Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and will travel to Lynn Classical tomorrow morning (Thursday). They will host Somerville next Monday, travel to non-league foe Cambridge next Tuesday, and trek to Malden next Wednesday.

EHS flag football team doing well in its first season

The newly-formed Everett High flag football team has opened its first season with two victories in its first four contests.

“The team is doing great,” said head coach Duane Sigsbury. “Our record is 2-2 and we have been very competitive in all of our games. It’s been a lot of fun for the team practicing and getting to know one another.  The best is yet to come for the team. We just want to have fun and learn the game of flag football.”

Flag football teams compete once per week with a doubleheader format in which every team plays two, 45-minute games. Although flag football is not an officially sanctioned varsity sport by the MIAA, it has been growing in popularity in recent years under the aegis of the New England Patriots organization.

And with flag football for both men and women scheduled to be an Olympic sport for the 2028 summer games in Los Angeles (and with the NCAA designating  women’s flag football as an Emerging Sport for Women across all three divisions), flag football is certain to continue to grow in popularity at the high school level in the coming years.

The members of the groundbreaking 2026 Crimson Tide team are: Kathleen Desouza, Daisy Matthias, Emelly De Jesus, Juliette Romboli, Ariana Rouse, Amanda Verteiro, Lindsey Sylva, Katherine Venegas, Ashley Heath, Nicaea Legal, Taniya Mobely,  Kylee Nord, Tiffany Aguilar, Julianna Rivera, Lavinia Batista Simon, Gabrielle Alexandra, Ferlanda Augustine, Briana Desir, Elizabeth LaRoche, Isabell Mitrano, Sheneida Pierre, and Jacqueline Pineda.

Sigsbury and his crew were scheduled to take on Woburn and Excel Academy yesterday (Tuesday) and will travel to Pentucket next Monday to face Pentucket and Revere.

EHS boys volleyball tops Lynn Tech

The Everett High boys volleyball team claimed its second victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph over non-league opponent Lynn Tech last Thursday. The contest was the third road match of the week for the Crimson Tide, and the third time proved to be the charm after previous losses to Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Somerville and Revere on Monday and Wednesday.

“We’ve been inconsistent in most of our matches this year,” said EHS head coachMichaek Fineran. “Against Somerville, we lost the first set 25-10, but almost took the second set, falling 27-25. Sometimes it’s a slow start, other times it’s a string of four or five plays in a row that don’t go our way.

“Against the competition we face, those lapses are too much to overcome, so we focused Thursday on starting strong and playing loose throughout the match,” Fineran said. “For the most part, we were successful and came away with the win.”

The victory over Tech did not come easily and proved to be a hard-fought battle all the way. Everett was up, 15-14, in the first set until seniors Matheus Teixeira Fernandes and Christian Ramirez combined for five aces in nine serves to seal the set, 25-15. Additional  key contributions came from Teixeira Fernandes, who had four kills; freshman Miguel Rodovanski with three kills; and junior Adam Bousbaa, who had three kills and a block in the set.

The Tide then had one of those aforementioned lapses early in the second set. After Everett missed a serve down 6-4, a blink later it was 18-8. Sophomore Danilo Teixeira Fernandes had a string of seven serves with an ace to cut the deficit to 22-21, but Everett dropped the set, 25-22.

“We were chasing them in the third set as well, and found ourselves down 15-7,” said Fineran. “During a timeout, I told them that we’ve seen this play out too many times already this season — too many times this week — but we had an opportunity to chip away at the lead and get back to playing fundamentally sound volleyball. It certainly wasn’t anything I said, but they did turn it around.”

Bousbaa had six kills and a block and Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had five kills and four serves, including an ace, that tied it at 22-22. Senior Noel Lopez Ardon had two kills, a block, and the final two serves of the set, acing the set point, for the 27-25 win.

In the fourth set, junior Samir Dervisevic had two of his three blocks and hit all seven of his serves in. Junior Akush Gurung had two of his five kills. Rodovanski had a block and a kill after moving to the middle. Matheus Teixeira Fernandes had five more kills, giving him 17 for the match. Senior Isaque Agostinho had a kill and made key plays defensively that helped the Tide eke out a 25-23 win to take the match.

Fineran and his crew were scheduled to host GBL foe Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and will play at GBL rival Malden this morning (Wednesday). They will entertain GBL adversaries Chelsea next Monday and Lynn Classical next Wednesday.

“We are 2-6 as we approach the midpoint of the season,” Finmeran added. “There will be no easy victories. We will have to play smart and stay aggressive to dig ourselves out of the hole.”
