Softball team falls to Revere
The Everett High softball team came up on the short end of a 13-7 decision to Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Revere last Wednesday at Glendale Park.
The contest was a see-saw battle through the first five innings. After Revere grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Crimson Tide responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
After Arianna Osorio-Bonilla reached on an error and stole second, a base hit by Olivia Dresser brought Arianna across the plate. Successive base hit by Juliette Romboli and Kylegh Ridlon delivered Dresser and Romboli scored on a passed ball.
Revere regained the lead with two runs in the second and added another in the third, but Everett rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 5-5. A ground-out by Ridlon that scored Romboli and a base hit by Meghan Comerford that brought in McKenzie Rivera, who had singled, accounted for the Tide’s runs.
After Revere forged ahead with a solo marker in the fourth to make it 6-5, Everett’s starting pitcher, Mia Allen, was forced to leave the game when she was struck by a line drive to her leg in the fifth. Three walks and a hit produced two runs for Revere, to make it 8-5, and the Lady Patriots put the game away with five runs in the sixth thanks to a combination of walks, errors, and hits to increase their advantage to 13-5.
Everett got two back in the bottom of the sixth on base hits by Osorio-Bonilla and Dresser, who eventually came around on Revere errors, for the 13-7 finale.
“It was a close game until we had to pull our pitcher due to injury,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “Our bats showed up and we put together some solid offense, but too many defensive errors ended up costing us. We fought hard, just came up short in a 13–7 loss.”
The Tide, who overwhelmed GBL foe Lynn English this past Monday by a score of 24-11, will make the short trip across the Parkway to GBL opponent Chelsea today (Wednesday) and will travel to GBL adversary Medford next Tuesday afternoon.
Girls lacrosse defeats Malden
The Everett high girls lacrosse team split its two contests in its season-opening week.
Last Tuesday, coach Nicola Jones’s crew came up on the short end of a 12-1 decision to Somerville. Amanda Verteiro scored the Tide’s only goal in a hard-fought effort.
“We faced a tough challenge in our season-opener at Somerville,” said Jones. “Despite the lopsided score, the team demonstrated resilience and identified valuable areas for improvement while executing several positive plays throughout the game. captains Nicole Damaceno, Amanda Verteiro, and Lindsey Cherichel-Paul led by example, maintaining their energy and commitment to teamwork and refusing to give up, regardless of the scoreboard.
“This game helped set the tone for the season: we aren’t here simply to win — we’re here to play our hardest, work together, and support each other on and off the field, all while having a little fun along the way,” Jones added.
That mind-set prevailed in the Tide’s next contest with Malden two days later when Jones’s squad secured a dominant 10-5 victory.
The offensive attack was led by Verteiro with four goals, followed by Damaceno with three goals and two each from Isabela Bicalho and Isabella Jimenez.
Defensively, goalie Bri Sequeira made several impressive saves, while defenders Samantha P. Lemus, Lindsey Cherichel-Paul, Fanny Lopez, and Annia Raccie Blaise provided strong protection throughout the game.
“Our attack and midfield unit, featuring Melissa Meireles, Damaceno, Verteiro, Bicalho, and Aguirre Jimenez, controlled the tempo and created numerous scoring opportunities,” said Jones.
“The team demonstrated excellent cohesion and maintained high energy from the opening draw to the final whistle, setting a positive tone for the season,” Jones said. “We look forward to a season filled with hard work, fun, and team camaraderie as we continue to build on this impressive start.
“While we will always push to lead on the scoreboard at every game, the team understands and demonstrates that being a team is about so much more than winning — their leadership, resilience, and perspective have already established a strong foundation for a truly meaningful season ahead,” the coach added.
Jones and her crew were scheduled to host Revere yesterday (Tuesday) before traveling to Medford tomorrow (Thursday). They will return home to 7-Acre Park to entertain Lowell next Tuesday morning and Somerville next Thursday morning with the opening draws set for 10:00.
EHS boys volleyball team battling hard
The Everett High boys volleyball fought hard, but dropped two matches this past week, first falling 3-0 on the road to Lynn Classical and then coming up short at home against Lynn English, 3-1.
The Tide played both matches without captain Christian Ramirez, but senior Travis Phay stepped up and made a number of key digs.
“We had a number of people step up against Classical,” said head coach Michael Fineran.
Junior middle Adam Bousbaa served 11 of 12 in and added a block. Senior outside hitter Matheus Teixeira Fernandes was five-for-six serving and led the team with seven kills. Junior Akush Gurung was seven-for-eight with two kills, and senior captain Victor Rosa was three-for-four with a kill.
“However, we could not match their firepower and lost in straight sets,” noted Fineran.
“We concentrated on blocking better in practice, and we felt good about our chances playing at home Wednesday against Lynn English,” Fineran continued. However, the Tide fell into an early hole,18-6, in the first set, though five serves from Bousbaa and five kills by Gurung and Teixeira Fernandes made the final score a bit more respectable, 25-16.
“That gave us confidence that we brought to the second set,” said Fineran.
Matheus’s brother, sophomore Danilo Teixeira Fernandes, served seven times with two aces. Bousbaa served eight times with a kill, and Rosa had two kills from the right side. The set was competitive throughout, but the Tide came up just short, 26-24.
Rather than give up, Everett played even better in the third set, getting four aces, three blocks, and 10 kills in a 25-19 win. Senior Isaque Agostinho had one of the blocks and was a disrupter in the front row. Junior Donart Maksutaj had another block and chipped in with two serves. Freshman Miguel Rodovanski had two of the kills, and senior setter Noel Lopez Ardon added an ace.
Lopez Ardon had a string of serves in the fourth set that brought Everett back from an 18-10 deficit to tie the set at 18-18. Although Agostinho had three kills and Bousbaa had a block and a kill, Everett still fell short, 25-22.
“It is frustrating to lose, but I liked seeing the fight we showed when we were down,” said Fineran. “We are still trying to work in new varsity players, and I saw glimpses of our identity start to emerge. But we’re a quarter of the way through our season, and it won’t get any easier with Somerville and Revere coming up next week.
“We know we are capable of playing better,” Fineran added. “We need to bring the enthusiasm and energy from practices onto the court in games, and we have to limit our mistakes. We know it. We just have to do it.”
The Tide were scheduled to travel to Somerville this past Monday and will trek to Revere today (Wednesday). They will travel to Lynn Tech tomorrow (Thursday) before returning home to meet Medford next Tuesday morning at 11:15. They will hit the road to Malden next Wednesday.
EHS girls tennis is in full swing
The Everett High girls tennis team opened its season this week with three non-league matches against Lowell, Saugus, and Mystic Valley, showcasing a mix of returning experience and new talent eager to grow.
This year’s roster features four returning players alongside many newcomers who are quickly learning the game and gaining valuable match experience.
The season began last Monday with a road match in Lowell, where the Tide fell 0–5. Despite the result, the match provided an important early test for the team.
On Wednesday, the team hosted Mystic Valley at Rosetti Park for its home opener. Junior captain Brigette Parada led the way at first singles with a strong performance, earning a 6–4, 6–1 victory. At second singles, junior Trina Le competed in a tough match, but came up short, 4–6, 0–6.
At third singles, Thy Phanhang delivered a standout moment for the Tide, earning her first varsity win. After taking the first set 6–4 and dropping the second 0–6, Phanhang showed resilience by battling back to win a tightly-contested third-set tiebreaker, 7–5.
In doubles play, Amelia McNally and Ashley Pineda competed at first doubles in their first match together, falling 1–6, 1–6. At second doubles, newcomers Luna Sepulveda and Abby Falkowski impressed in just their second match experience, showing strong effort despite the loss.
The Tide returned to action Thursday against Saugus, but fell 0–5.
“Although the team is still finding its footing, there is a lot of potential throughout the lineup,” said coach Courtney Meninger. “With continued hard work and player development, we look to grow stronger as the season progresses.”
Meninger and her crew were scheduled to meet Greater Boston League rival Medford this past Monday and will make the short trek to GBL foe Malden today (Wednesday). They will entertain GBL adversaries Somerville this Friday; Lynn Classical next Tuesday; and Lynn English next Wednesday.
