Tide boys hoop rolls past Malden, 56-30

The Everett High boys basketball team rolled to its sixth straight victory with a 56-30 triumph over Greater Boston League rival Malden last Tuesday, but saw their winning streak snapped with a 69-44 loss to Chelsea last Thursday.

“We went into Malden’s house and secured another important Greater Boston League win,” said EHS head coach Gerard Boyce. “We knew they’d come out fighting, but we stayed disciplined and executed our game plan, resulting in a solid victory.

“We’ve been working hard on our defensive rotations and communication in practice, and it is starting to pay off,” Boyce said. “On the offensive end, we started very slow then we started sharing the ball. It wasn’t about one individual; it was a total team effort, which is exactly what we wanted to see. Everyone who stepped on the floor contributed to this win.”

The Crimson Tide were led in the scoring column by senior captain Cristian Vasquez, who struck for 15 points. Emmanuel Nelson came off the bench and hit for 12 points and Adam Aitmessaoud made a solid contribution with eight points and eight assists.

The Malden victory lifted the Tide’s record to 7-5 after a 1-5 start to their season.

“This is great momentum, but we can’t get complacent,” Boyce noted afterwards. “We still have areas to improve and tough games ahead. We need to keep focusing on the fundamentals, maintain that defensive intensity, and correct our execution as we prepare for our next challenge.”

However, two nights later the Crimson Tide fell short to a Chelsea team that had started its season fast with an 8-1 record, but which had dropped two straight coming into the encounter with the Tide.

Everett started the contest well, thanks to the hot shooting of Vazquez (seven points in the period, including  three-pointer) and a hoop at the end of the period by Jayden Alsaindor that gave the Tide a 9-7 advantage at the first buzzer.

In addition, the Tide played staunch defense, creating a number of Chelsea turnovers and in the paint, Samir King-DaCosta was a bulwark, rejecting Red Devils inside.

However, a three-pointer to start the second period by Chelsea’s Geo Brito gave the Red Devils a 10-9 lead that they never relinquished. Although the Tide maintained their intensity on defense, they were unable to keep up on offense, as the proverbial “lid on the bucket” saw many makeable Everett shots either go in-and-count or circle around-the-rim-and-out.

Another trey by Brito before the end of the half boosted Chelsea into a 26-18 advantage at the intermission.

The Tide came out with intensity to start the second half. Two free throws and a hoop by Alsaindor brought Everett within five, 27-22, in the opening minutes of the third period, but the Tide were unable to sustain their momentum. Chelsea went on a 10-point run that enlarged the Red Devil margin to 15, 37-22, midway through the period.

The third buzzer saw Chelsea holding a 47-31 lead entering the final eight minutes, a deficit that the Tide were unable to overcome.

Everett now stands at 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the GBL. The Tide are tied for third place in the GBL with Somerville, one game behind second-place Chelsea and two games behind first-place Lynn Classical.

Boyce and his crew were scheduled to play at Classical last night (Tuesday) and will host Lynn English tomorrow evening (Thursday) for a 7:00 tip-off. They will entertain non-league opponent Durfee Saturday at 5:30 before hitting the road to Somerville next Tuesday.

EHS girls win two straight over GBL foes

The Everett High girls basketball team earned a pair of victories over Greater Boston League rivals Malden (50-28) and Chelsea (58-51) this past week.

The double-victories ended a four-game skid for coach Riley Dunn’s Lady Crimson Tide.

“We had a huge team win against Malden,” said Dunn. “I was so proud of the team’s relentless effort and execution of the game plan. It is extremely tough to lose four games in a row and to mentally stay in it and really just trust each other and get a great team win.

“They executed the game plan beautifully and played together. We had 10 assists as a team and I think that has been a focus area for us — to really share the ball and set up our teammates for success.”

Sophomore Julianna Rivera hit for a game-high 18 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line.

Senior captain Casey Martinez reached double figures with 11 points, pulled down rebounds, and dished six assists in a superb all-around performance. Fellow senior captain Kat Landaverde Vasquez came close to achieving a double-double with nine points, nine boards, and three assists.

Junior Kylee Nord and senior captain Nicole Damaceno controlled the boards with eight and 10 rebounds respectively..

“Every player made an impact in this game,” said Dunn. “It was a true team win and a great show of resilience. We set the tone from the beginning and maintained the intensity for four quarters — another goal we have been focusing on. We’re looking to get better one day at a time.”

Two nights later the Lady Crimson Tide defeated a tough Chelsea team, 58-51, in a contest that came down to the final minute.

Rivera once again topped the Everett scoring column with 20 points, knocking down five three-pointers and snaring five rebounds.

Landaverde Vasquez and Damaceno both turned in double-doubles, with Katerina scoring 18 points and pulling down 14 boards and Nicole hitting for 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

“This was the first time in my six years that two players have had double-doubles in the same game,” noted Dunn.

“We were excited to go 2-0 this week and grind out a win against a tough Chelsea team,” said Dunn. “Major credit to the Chelsea coach and his girls, who are relentless and work so hard. They are building a competitive program over there and the future is bright for them which is great to see as we continue to build girls basketball around our GBL cities.”

Dunn and her crew are scheduled to travel to Lynn English tomorrow (Thursday) evening and will host Somerville next Tuesday.
