Garcia’s four goals, Carbajal’s clutch save beat Chelsea, 4-3

Senior captain Gabriel Garcia scored four goals — one of only four EHS soccer players ever to do so in one game — and junior goalkeeper Edwin Carbajal stopped a penalty shot in the final minute with an incredible leg save to lead the Everett High boys soccer team to an exciting 4-3 victory over Chelsea last Tuesday at 7-Acre Field

After the Crimson Tide conceded two goals to the visiting Red Devils In the first 10 minutes, EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde called a timeout that ignited a fire under his team.

“I called a time-out to settle them and emphasize that we were still in the game and needed to regroup our core principles and stay disciplined,” said Landaverde. “After that, a new side was on the pitch and we started going.”

Garcia began to aggravate the Chelsea defense, pushing each ball forward, and bagged his first goal on a long ball from Whitney Pereira, chipping the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Garcia received a great through-ball from Saymon Coelho to bring the game back to level at 2-2.

Then, just before the half ended, Garcia earned a penalty kick and sealed it to end the first half with a hat trick for a 3-2 Crimson Tide lead.

The second half was very back and forth, with both teams being aggressive and creating chances, but the Tide controlled the play. With about six minutes to go, Chelsea earned a free kick about 40 yards away, and were able to place a header off the cross to tie the game 3-3.

However, with two minutes remaining, Garcia, after receiving a nicely-placed throw-in from Kevin Renderos, turned on the Chelsea center back and slotted away his fourth goal of the night.

That set the stage for keeper Carbajon’s heroics in the final minute to preserve the win over a Chelsea team that is in second-place in the Greater Boston League.

Two days later the Tide hosted first-place Revere.

“They caught an early lead in the first game off a set piece, but it did not deter us,” said Landaverde. “Our midfield and defense were holding down the lines and combining really well to create chances all game.

“Entering the second half with a 1-0 deficit, we continued to challenge Revere and hold them at bay, while being dangerous on their side of the field,” Landaverde said.

The Tide’s pressure eventually paid off with 16 minutes remaining when junior captain Rene Lainez sent a through ball to freshman Miguel Santos, who sealed it away on a half turn past the keeper to make it 1-1.

The Everett defense continued to hold Revere away, but gave up another set piece on which the Patriots converted for a 2-1 lead. Revere added an insurance goal for the 3-1 finale.

“This was a disappointing loss that did not reflect how we actually played,” said Landaverde.

This past Saturday the Tide made the trip to Dorchester to take on BC High, which is ranked fourth in the Division 1 power ratings.

“It was a very tense matchup in our last non-league game against a ranked #4 team,” said Landaverde. “We travelled with a small squad, but were able to create many chances and put up a fight.”

However, BC got on the board early off a long throw-in that proved to be the Eaglets’ only clear shot they had on net throughout the first half.

“Junior Diego Teixeria was in net for us and was able to hold his own for a majority of the game,” noted Landaverde. “Kevin Renderos had a great game, along with sophomore Jason Santos, who put in strong tackles and did not let BC players off that easily.”

With about 15 minutes left, BC generated a chance in the box, and an Eaglet was able to sneak in a second goal of the game for the 2-0 finale.

Landaverde and his crew hosted Lynn English last night (Tuesday) in a contest that was highlighted by Senior Night festivities to which all soccer alumni were invited. They then will trek to Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday), to Somerville next Tuesday, and to Medford next Thursday in their season finale.

The Tide, who stand at 4-6-4, need to win three of those final four contests in order to qualify for the post-season state tourney.

Two wins for EHS field hockey

The Everett High field hockey team turned in an outstanding week, bringing home two wins in three contests last week.

The Crimson Tide started strong with an 8-0 win against Northeast Regional and finished with a 3-1 triumph over Haverhill. In between, the Tide came up short to Marblehead, 1-0.

“We played a super good game against Marblehead with a tough loss,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones, “but we ended the week with a hard-fought and well-deserved win against Haverhill.”

In the Northeast victory, captain Stéphano Oreleus scored four goals, Lindsey Sylva added two, and both Dadspencer Racine and Wilins Julen celebrated their first goals.

“Isadora Da Silveria stepped up and took the role as goalie for the second half, keeping the ball out of the net with some great saves,” said Jones, “Our starting goalie, Wilins Julen, took his skills out onto the field as an offensive player which led him to his first goal.”

A number of Crimson Tide shone in the battle with Marblehead. “We had some huge and amazing great saves by goalie Wilins Julen and strong defense by Emely Flores, Justin Contreras,” said Jones. “Anayha Sunsin stepped up and played forward, a position outside of her comfort zone, and did a great job. Ildha Fevrier, Ralphy Raphael and Ferlanda Augustin all gave 110% of their effort to the whole game. Lindsey Sylva and Stephano Orleus did a great job leading the team as captains.”

In Friday’s win vs. Haverhill, Ivy Walker scored two goals and Spencer Racine added a solo tally. “Once again, we had some huge saves by Wilins Julen and good defense by Emely Flores and Britt Valle. The team also had some great assists from Ralphy Raphael, Lindsey Sylva and Stephano Orelus. Jacky Ramos did a great job on offense as well,” said Jones.

“We head into the last two weeks of our season feeling good and looking forward to our coming games,” Jones added. The Tide are scheduled to play at Malden today (Wednesday) and then will wrap up their 2025 season by hosting Haverhill this Friday, Saugus next Monday, Lowell next Wednesday, and Revere on Friday, October 24,

Crimson Tide girls edged by Chelsea

The Everett High girls soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Greater Boston League rival Chelsea this past week.

“It was a hard-fought game and I will give Chelsea all the credit,” said Persuitte. “They did very well to break through our defense to score their two goals. Some notable standouts for us were Rosa Ramero in the midfield, Odalis Sandoval in the striker position, and Melanie  Ribeiro on defense.   Gabriella Menjivar played well in the net as well, despite giving up the two goals.”

Persuitte and his crew, who stand at 4-6-1 on the season, were scheduled to play at Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday). They will travel to Revere next Monday evening and will return home to entertain Somerville next Tuesday.

EHS girls volleyball playing with a lot of heart

Although the Everett High girls volleyball team dropped its three matches this past week, Lady Crimson Tide head coach Mike Fineran was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We had competitive, spirited matches this week, but we ultimately came up short,” said Fineran, whose squad fell to Lynn Classical and Lawrence by scores of 3-0 and to Lynn English by a 3-1 margin in their last away game of the season.

“Our record is 2-12,” noted Fineran. “Obviously, we wish that was different, but I have been pleased by the players’ attitudes, which have stayed positive throughout this tough stretch. I have had difficult seasons in the past, and it is hard to keep up the energy and focus when you’re not racking up wins. But this group has stuck together, they’ve kept fighting, and that’s a credit to our senior leadership.

“Captain Nicole Damaceno has set the tone on the court,” Fineran continued. “As our setter, Nicole is involved in almost every play, and she has been a steadying force for us. Nicole is such a natural leader. She also leads the team in total serves and serving percentage.”

In Wednesday’s match against Lynn English, Damaceno served her 400th career serve and this season she has delivered 96% of her serves in play. Damaceno also notched her 50th ace and 50th kill in three years.

“Assistant captain Juliette Romboli has been our most vocal leader on the court and we feed off her energy,” Fineran said of Romboli, who surpassed 50 career aces in Friday’s match against Lawrence. “Juliette leads the team in kills. Her 72 kills are nearly 40 more than the second highest on the team.

“Our other assistant captain, senior Amanda Verteiro, has been dynamic on defense,” Fineran added. “Amanda is closing in on 150 made serves and 50 aces for her career as well.

“Other seniors who have helped keep our spirits up include Shaeendra Hall and Lindsey Cherichel-Paul,” the coach continued. “Shaeendra has served nearly a hundred times this season and she has tallied 33 kills while playing outside, middle, and back row at various times.

“Lindsey leads the team in blocks with 11,” said Fineran “Aya Selimovic and Leliani Ros-Morales add much needed depth to our front row, and both have been reliable servers when called upon.

“I’m disappointed for them that we haven’t been able to squeeze out a couple more victories,” Fineran concluded. “Our competition has been playing at a high level, but we also know that it’s more about our own performance than theirs. We either make plays, or we don’t. We haven’t made enough of them lately. But I have no problem with our effort or our heart. We have six home games over the next eight school days. I know we’ll keep fighting to the end.”

The Lady Crimson Tide were scheduled to wrap up their season with six home matches this week and next: Somerville yesterday (Tuesday), Medford today (Wednesday), Saugus on Friday, Revere next Monday, Malden next Wednesday, and Lowell next Thursday.

EHS golf team ends season on positive note

Although the Everett High golf team fell short in its final matches of the season last week to Malden/Revere, Somerville, and Lynn Classical, first-year head coach Dave Peach was pleased with his team’s effort this [ast season. “All in all it was a learning year and the team made a lot of progress,” said Peach. “Each player progressed quite well, each taking approximately 10 strokes off their handicap.”
