EHS field hockey rips Malden, 7-0

The Everett High field hockey team delivered a strong, two-way effort to claim a 7-0 victory over Greater Boston League rival Malden recently.

This match featured several impressive goals, including two from Stephano Orleus and two from Lindsey Sylva. Ivy Walker also shone, scoring in the second quarter and providing an outstanding assist in the first. Additionally, Ildha Fevrier and Justin Contreras each scored their first career goals, with Ildha netting one in the first quarter and Justin scoring at the game’s conclusion.

The Crimson Tide then traveled to meet three non-league opponents, and though they came up short, they fought hard in all three contests.

“We faced a challenging week, playing away against Marblehead, Hamilton-Wenham, and Saugus,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. “Unfortunately, we lost all three matches, with scores of 0-3 against Marblehead, 0-2 against Hamilton-Wenham, and 1-3 against Saugus.

“Despite the losses, the team showcased commendable effort, with strong defensive plays and standout performances from our junior goalie, Wilins Julien, who made multiple crucial saves in each game,” Jones said.

In the match against Saugus, Stephano Orleus notched the Tide’s lone goal, contributing to an overall strong performance characterized by excellent passing and stick work.

“The team is preparing for a busy schedule ahead, with three games each week until the end of the season,” added Jones. The Tide were set to meet Waltham this past Monday and will trek to Revere today (Wednesday). They will host Hamilton-Wenham on Friday, Northeast Regional next Monday, and Marblehead next Wednesday.

EHS boys soccer earns a win & a tie

The Everett High boys soccer team enjoyed a successful week, earning a win and a tie in its two matches last week against Greater Boston League (GBL) opponents Lynn Classical and Somerville.

In the contest with Classical last Tuesday, the Crimson Tide seized the momentum from the outset, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission, and never looked back en route to a 3-0 victory.

“We had a day of building confidence and generating chances,” said EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde. “We got off to a great start, maintaining possession and being aggressive early on.”

Senior captain Gabriel Garcia was the lead playmaker for the Tide. “Gabriel took over the left wing and was adamant in controlling the game and applying pressure to the Rams’ defense,” said Landaverde.”

Sophomore Jonathan Hernandez was also very aggressive in the midfield. Jonathan’s hard work paid off when he delivered a strike early in the first half from the left corner of the 18-yard box into the top corner of the Rams’ net to give Everett a 1-0 lead. It was his second career varsity goal, assisted by Whitney Pereira.

The Tide opened the second half with a 1-0 lead and were still maintaining possession, as junior captain Rene Lainez,  junior Whitney Pereira, and sophomore Jason Santos were key pieces in feeding passes and moving Everett forward.

“On defense, our sophomore duo, Pedro Pascoal and Pedro Romero, were solid in the backline and kept us from being scored on,” noted Landaverde.

Late in the second half, sophomore Christopher Lopez Rivera sent an over-the-top ball to senior striker Kerim Memic, who ran onto the ball and dribbled past the goalkeeper to notch his first career varsity goal to give the Tide an insurance marker.

A couple of minutes later, Memic earned a penalty kick, which captain Garcia delivered into the back of the Ram net for the 3-0 win.

Tide goalkeeper Edwin Menjivar Carbajal earned his second clean sheet of the season.

This past Friday, Everett hosted Somerville at Rivergreen (after a location change from Everett Stadium).

“It was a tight matchup, which resulted in a 0-0 draw,” said Landaverde. “We created a couple of key chances and saw Rene Lainez, sophomore Daniel Henriquez, and sophomore Saymon Coelho come very close to scoring, but they could not finish. Freshman Miguel Santos also had great minutes up top and gave us a lot to build off.

“It was a difficult game for us to finish tied, after having been very dangerous on their half of the field,” Landaverde added, “but we saw a lot of things that we need to continue instilling at training and games to continue improving.

“Halfway through the season, I am proud of the work coming from the underclassmen who have stepped up and given the team quality minutes in a variety of positions,” said Landaverde. “We’re looking forward to an exciting second half of the season.”

Landaverde and his crew, who stand at 2-4-3 at the midpoint of the season, were scheduled to host Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and to travel to Malden tomorrow (Thursday). They will entertain Chelsea next Tuesday at Rivergreen.

Girls duel Classical to 0-0 deadlock

The Everett High girls soccer team dueled Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Lynn Classical to a 0-0 draw last Tuesday. “We had a strong showing from Kayla Andrade, Connie Paz Hernandez, goalkeeper Kaylyn Rivera, Melanie Ribeiro, and Emelly De Jesus,” said EHS head coach Domenick Persuitte. “All played their respective positions very well. “

Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide dropped a 6-0 decision to GBL foe Somerville. “In the first half we kept Somerville to a one-score game, and we were playing very well,” said Persuitte. “In the second half a lot of mistakes were made, and I’ll give Somerville credit; they capitalized on them.  Some notable standouts for us were Kathleen DeSouza, Kayla Andrade, Odalis Sandoval, and Jasmine Morias.”

Persuitte and his crew, who stand at a level 4-4-1 at the midpoint of the season,  were scheduled to travel to Medford yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Malden tomorrow (Thursday). They will make the short trek across the Parkway to Chelsea next Tuesday.

EHS golfers show improvement

Although the Everett High golf team came up short in its matches this past week, head coach Dave Peach saw improvement from his team.

“Although we were defeated by Lynn Classical on their home turf of Gannon Municipal Golf Course, the kids played a great round, yet were unfortunately defeated by the Lynn players,” said Peach. “It was a better run at Gannon this time compared to the Lynn English match the week before. We are gradually improving with each match.”

The Tide’s match against Malden/Revere on Thursday at Stoneham Oaks was rained out and will be made up on October 6.

Peach and his crew were scheduled to meet Medford yesterday (Tuesday), Lynn English tomorrow (Thursday), and Somerville next Tuesday, all at Stoneham Oaks.

EHS volleyball hosts Classical Monday

The Everett High girls volleyball team will return home after a stretch of six straight matches on the road when coach Mike Fineran and his crew host Lynn Classical this coming Monday. The opening serve is set for 5:30.

The Lady Crimson Tide came up short in both of its matches last week, falling at Medford last Monday and Revere last Wednesday, both by scores of 3-0.

“We don’t have a great record, but we are not playing poorly, and we aren’t giving up,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “We have been running into tough teams who have made more plays and fewer mistakes.”

In the opening set vs. Medford, Everett served well and tallied five kills, but the Lady Tide were never close. The set ended 25-11.

Five Lady Crimson Tide had kills in the second set, which was more competitive, with Everett coming up short  25-17.

In the third set, senior Shaeendra Hall had a string of seven serves in a row including two aces. Senior assistant captain Juliette Romboli had two of her four kills, and senior Leliani Ros-Morales had a kill, but Everett dropped the set, 25-15.

On Wednesday in Revere, Everett was crushed in the opening set, 25-6, in which the Lady Crimson hit three of their six serves out and scored only two kills.

But the Tide rallied in the second set behind sophomore Elora Philippe’s nine straight serves to give Everett its first lead of the match, 24-23.

Romboli had three kills in that span, and senior Aya Selimovic picked up a key block. Senior captain Nicole Damaceno had two kills and an ace, but the Tide ended up falling short, 29-27.

Everett matched up well in the third set, with Romboli, Damaceno, and Philippe all earning a pair of kills. Romboli and Philippe scored aces, and Damaceno served four in a row to pull within two, 20-18. Senior assistant captain Amanda Verteiro was outstanding in the back row and even got reps in the front.

“We had a chance to tie the game at 22, but Revere pulled away and took the set 25-21,” said Fineran. “The win gave Revere, who had recently beaten Medford in five sets, an 8-1 record on the season, which shows how strong the competition in the GBL is, and also how important it is to play our best from start to finish.

“Our season does not get any easier. After we travel to Malden, we start the second half when we play everyone a second time over a span of a little more than three weeks. We have to regroup quickly and keep fighting,” Fineran added.

After next Monday’s home match with Classical, Fineran and his crew (who were scheduled to play at Malden this past Monday and at Chelsea today) will trek to Lynn English next Wednesday.
