The Everett High School football team traveled to Westwood Friday to play defending Division 1 state champion Xaverian and the host Hawks proved to be worthy of their current No. 1 ranking.
Xaverian defeated Everett, 49-14, in an early-season matchup of undefeated teams.
“Xaverian is a well-coached, well-disciplined, highly talented team,” said Everett head coach Rob DiLoreto. “They performed that way against us in this game.”
Xaverian (3-0) led 28-0 at the half before Jamauri Dulin provided a definitive highlight for Everett with a 90-yard kickoff return in the third quarter. Quarterback Tyler Freni scored Everett’s second touchdown on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Everett had opened its season with impressive its victories over Medford and Lynn Classical as Coach DiLoreto began the Tide’s march back to the top tier of programs in the state.
“We are working hard to improve,” said DiLoreto. “We know what we need to do as a coaching staff and a program in order to improve and raise our level of performance. We have a plan in place at practice to work really hard and to address the areas of concern in all three phases (offense, defense, and special teams). We have a lot of bright spots to build on. Our players are giving every ounce of effort and energy and commitment to the program and to our improvement, and I’m very proud of that.”
Everett hosts Boston College High School Thursday at 6 p.m. at Everett Veterans Memorial Stadium. Senior Night festivities for the football team, cheerleading team, and marching band will precede the game as the seniors and their families will be recognized.
