EHS boys soccer takes measure of Malden
The Everett High boys soccer team opened its Greater Boston League (GBL) season in successful fashion with a 3-1 victory over Malden last Tuesday night under the lights at Everett Stadium.
“It was an exciting night to get back under the lights and face a familiar rival,” said EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde. “We had an exciting start possessing the ball and finding each other on the field. “
After conceding a goal from a corner kick about 20 minutes into the game, the Crimson Tide struck back quickly. Freshman Miguel Santos scored the tying goal after the Malden goalkeeper fumbled a ball to make it 1-1 at the intermission.
Everett continued the swing in momentum in its favor after the break. “In the second half, we came out much more organized and began combining more together,” said Landaverde. Junior Kevin Renderos earned a penalty kick, making it 2-1, and shortly thereafter, sophomore Saymon Coelho got a loose ball in the box and was able to put it away for a 3-1 advantage.
“For the remaining 20 minutes of the game we controlled the ball and were able to finish strong and seal our first win,” said the coach. “All three goal-scorers netted their first varsity career goals.”
Two days later last Thursday, the Tide made the short trip across the Parkway to Chelsea, but this time 3-1 did not prove their lucky number.
“It was a very difficult game for us to get started,” said Landaverde. “From the beginning we struggled to possess the ball and could not find each other like we usually do with our pass combinations and midfield rotations. In addition, Chelsea was fortunate to counter when our backline was off balance and took advantage of each opportunity. “
The result was a 3-1 deficit for Everett at the half, with the lone goal for the Tide coming from junior Whitney Pereira (Whitney’s second career varsity goal) off a free kick from junior Kevin Renderos.
“We played a bit better in the second half, but we still had a tough time putting plays together and the game ended in a disappointing 3-1 loss,” added Landaverde. “The team did not play to our strengths and we paid for it. Now we look forward to some more away trips across the GBL and to get more wins under our belt.”
Landaverde and his crew were scheduled to trek to Revere yesterday (Tuesday) and to Lynn English today (Wednesday) before returning home to host non-league opponent Methuen Saturday at 3:00 at the stadium.
They will entertain Lynn Classical next Tuesday at 4:15 at 7-Acre Park.
EHS field hockey tops Northeast, 4-1
The Everett High field hockey team earned a 4-1 victory over Northeast Regional last Wednesday.
Senior captain Stéphano Orleus was key, scoring the first goal, assisted by junior Ivey Walker, and finishing with another goal, assisted by senior Jane’e Saintvil. Walker also had a great game, scoring two goals, one coming in the second quarter assisted by Orleus, and another in the third quarter assisted by Justin Contreras.
“That win really highlighted how much we’ve improved, especially in keeping the ball wide and working together as a team,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. “I saw significant improvement and resilience from the athletes on the field hockey team.”
The triumph was a nice bounce-back victory for the Crimson Tide, who came up on the short end of a 9-0 decision to Waltham two days previously.
“Despite the score, our defense showed great effort, and goalie Wilins Julien stood out with a strong performance,” noted Jones. “This week demonstrated significant growth for the team, and we are excited for our upcoming game at Marblehead.”
Jones and her crew were scheduled to travel to Marblehead this past Monday and to host Malden today (Wednesday) before trekking to Hamilton-Wenham tomorrow (Thursday).
EHS girls soccer edges Chelsea, 1-0
The Everett High girls soccer team earned its first win of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Chelsea last Thursday evening under the lights at Everett Stadium.
Odalis Sandoval slotted the ball past the Chelsea keeper for the winning goal by crashing the net when the ball was loose, where it was a free-for-all in front of the Chelsea goal.
“Overall, the team played better and stepped up,” said EHS head coach Dom Persuitte. “Each game we are getting better and more comfortable with one another.”
Kaylyn Rivera recorded the first shutout of her goalkeeping career. “Kaylyn is making strides in learning the new position,” said Persuitte.
“Gisele Erazo played well,” Persuitte continued. “Her free kicks were on point, and of the three she took, two were nearly a goal. Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, Casey Martinez, Kayla Andrea, and Liv Simon all played well in their respective positions, Sofia in the CAM, and Casey as a center-back controlling the flow of the game.
“As always, we have a lot of work to do if we really want to show the GBL that Everett is a force,” Persuitte added. “We are improving every game, and I am pleased with that.”
The Lady Crimson Tide came up short by a score of 3-1 in their season-opener with non-league opponent Lowell two weeks ago. “We had a very slow start to the game, and things were not clicking for us until the very end of the match,” said Persuitte. “Our freshmen got their first taste of the varsity level, showcasing the intensity of the game.”
The lone Everett goal was scored by Gisselle Lemus, assisted by Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, on a placed-kick out of the box. After a few deflections off the goalkeeper in the 18-yard box; Giselle slotted the ball past the Lowell keeper.
“This game showed we have much to work on, but I am very optimistic about this season after our performance,” Persuitte said.
Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide took on another non-league opponent, Waltham, and came up short by a score of 6-0.
“We had a very strong start,” said Persuitte. “The team was pressing and being very aggressive to the ball in all aspects of the game. However, some simple mistakes led to a few breakdowns, and Waltham took advantage of that.
“Gisele Erazo had one of her best games to date,” Persuitte continued. “Her free kicks and crosses were on point, and she had a few shots on net. Kayla Andrade, Lavina Simon, Casey Martinez, and Gabby Lones all played their positions to the ‘T’. Despite the score, Kaylyn Rivera did a good job in net, as she is still learning the new position.”
Last Tuesday the Everett girls dropped a 3-2 decision to GBL foe Malden in what Persuitte characterized as “a very intense game.” Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, the Lady Tide’s leading scorer, reached the back of the Lady Golden Tornadoes’ net for both of the Everettt goals.
Sofia’s first goal was a free kick, while her second goal was a PK from the penalty spot.
“Malden came out strong in the first half, which in turn gave us the spark needed for the second half,” said Persuitte. “We kept pressing Malden, which led to their mistakes and gave us the confidence we needed. Some notable players who held their own were Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, Kayla Andrade, Casey Martinez, Gissell Lemus, and Rosa Romero. All played their position perfectly well.
“We have seen significant improvement in our first four games, and we are finally finding our stride,” said Persuitte.
The Lady Crimson Tide were scheduled to entertain Revere yesterday (Tuesday) and Lynn English tomorrow (Thursday). They will travel to Lynn Classical next Tuesday.
EHS girls volleyball defeats Chelsea, 3-1
The Everett High girls volleyball team defeated Chelsea, 3-1, in their home-opener last Monday. Two days later, the Lady Crimson Tide came up short to a strong Lynn Classical team, 3-0.
“Classical has been at or near the top of the league for the past few seasons and they are deep, experienced, and talented again,” said EHS head coach Mike Fineran. “We were not able to build any momentum, but our effort never dropped.
“That has been one of our best attributes this season,” Fineran continued. “We keep playing hard and don’t pay too much attention to the score. We have 13 players on varsity, so we are able to stay fresh and hungry. “
Junior Kiana Flores and senior assistant captain Juliette Romboli led the team in the match with Classical with eight service points apiece. Romboli also had three aces and two kills, both team highs for the game.
Everett fared better in its home-opener two days earlier.
“It was Chelsea’s season-opener, and we took advantage of that to build an early 8-3 lead in the first set,” Fineran said.
Senior Shaeendra Hall had an ace, sophomore Elora Philippe had a kill and three service points, and junior libero Cassandra Tayag had two kills and two aces as the Lady Crimson took the first set, 25-18.
“We knew that Chelsea would iron out their mistakes, so we weren’t surprised when they came back to take the second set, 25-19, despite kills from Hall, Romboli, Phillipe, senior assistant captain Amanda Verteiro, and senior Leliani Ros-Morales,” said Fineran.
Verteiro had two aces in the third set, but Everett still trailed, 12-8. Hall went on a run, hitting four aces in a string of seven points in a row to give the Lady Tide a 16-12 advantage. Romboli and Philippe each had a pair of kills, and Philippe had an ace to close out the set, 25-19.
Phillipe had a pair of kills and six serves in a row in the third set that pushed Everett’s lead to 19-11. Hall had two kills and an ace, Tayag had two aces, and Romboli and Damaceno each tallied a block and a kill in the 25-16 clincher.
“It was a good team win,” said Fineran. “We don’t have any one superstar who will dominate the stat sheet, so we need to spread the attack across the roster and hope that different people step up to make plays. The more options we develop, the harder we’ll be to beat.”
Fineran and his crew took on Lynn English in their second (and last) home game of September this past Monday and will trek to Somerville today (Wednesday), to Medford next Monday, and to Revere next Wednesday.
EHS golfers get into the swing
The Everett High golf team has embarked on its 2025 season under the direction of new head coach Davd Peach.
“We are off to a solid start,” said Peach. “We have a lot of young players who are new to the game. We have three returners from last year who are helping guide the beginners in the right direction. So far we have a couple of losses under our belt for the start of the season, but we are using those to get our feet in the water and I expect it to be a quick turnaround. They are a talented team and as they gain more experience, they will continue to excel on and off the course.”
The EHS linksmen were scheduled to meet Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) at the Gannon Municipal Golf Course and Somerville tomorrow (Thursday) at Stoneham Oaks. They will return to Gannon next Tuesday to take on Lynn Classical.
Lucas Nunez sets course record for EHS cross country
The Everett High boys and girls cross country team opened their 2025 season with a meet against Medford last Wednesday on their home course at Rivergreen Park.
“The weather was perfect at Rivergreen Park and the runners all ran their best on our 3-mile course,” said EHS head coach Brendan Hahesy.
Although the Crimson Tide boys came up short in a closely-fought battle with the Mustangs by a score of 26-29, Lucas Nunez provided a highlight for Everett, winning the race in a time of 16:46 that set a new course record.
Lucas was followed by teammates Jeremy Whitlow (4th place in 18:02), Anthony Whitlow (6th, 18:37) Christopher Portillo Cruz (8th 19:08), and Carlos Pagan Landeo (10th, 19:39) to complete Everett’s scoring.
Other members of the team who ran well were Dominico Delle Rose (20:29), Wilmer Fuentes (20:53), Bryan Lewis (22:08), Praytush Darai (22:35), Anthoid Khanal (22:59), Michael Lemus Solis (25:05), and Brasesh Maharjan (34:53).
On the girls’ side, Akanshka Neupane was the top Lady Crimson Tide runner with a fourth-place performance in 23:53. Shashi Pokhrel took sixth place in 26:37 and Nathalia Dos Santos finished 10th in 29:49.
Hahesy and his crew were scheduled to host Lynn English today (Wednesday) and Chelsea next Wednesday.
