EHS boys soccer earns tie in opener
The Everett High boys soccer team battled Lowell (which is ranked #9 in the state by the Boston Globe) to a scoreless, nil-nil deadlock in the Crimson Tide’s season-opening contest last Wednesday at 7-Acre Park.
“It was a tough battle with a top-ranked team,” said EHS head coach Rodney Landaverde. “We did a great job holding down our defensive line and had a couple of dangerous opportunities on offense, but we could not connect to convert any goals. Lowell had a couple of chances as well, but also had difficulty finding the back of the net.
“Daniel Pinho and Jason Santos both did a great job commanding the line and staying disciplined in the back,” Landaverde continued. “Edwin Menjivar Carbajal earned his first clean sheet in his first start of the season.”
Two days later the Crimson Tide hosted Marblehead and came up on the short end of a 2-0 decision.
“We had a tough day moving the ball around and generating chances,” Landaverde said. “We dealt with some injuries throughout the game and had a tough time getting the ball to our front three and scoring goals.
“Marblehead was awarded a penalty in the first half and Edwin Menjivar made a tremendous save to keep us in the game,” Landaverde added. “In the second half we brought it together a bit more and created more chances that could have resulted in goals, but Marblehead kept us at bay. They were awarded another penalty and converted the PK this time, and in the final 20 minutes they scored another for the 2-0 final score.
“With our first two non-league games out of the way, we’re looking forward to opening GBL play this week,” said Landaverde, whose squad was set to host Malden last night (Tuesday) under the lights at Everett Stadium. “Malden is our longtime rival,” said Landaverde. “We’re expecting an intense game and we are looking forward to making our way at the stadium once again.”
After the match with Malden, Landaverde and his crew will become road warriors in the coming week, starting with a short trek across the Parkway to Chelsea tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon; traveling to Revere next Tuesday; and journeying to Manning Field to meet Lynn English next Wednesday.
EHS girls soccer to host Chelsea, Lawrence at stadium
The Everett High girls soccer team will host Greater Boston League (GBL) foe Chelsea tomorrow (Thursday) evening under the lights at Everett Stadium. The opening kick-off is set for 6:30.
The Lady Crimson Tide will be back at the stadium two days later when they will entertain non-league opponent Lawrence on Saturday morning at 11:00.
Coach Dom Persuitte and his crew, who came up short in their opening contests of the season last week in non-league matches with Lowell and Waltham, then will host GBL rival Revere next Tuesday afternoon at 7-Acre Park at 4:15.
EHS girls volleyball looking ahead to season
Although the Everett High girls volleyball team came up on the short end of its season-opening matches last week with non-league opponents Lowell and Lawrence, coach Michael Fineran and his crew are looking forward to the coming season.
“We are deep and versatile,” said Fineran. “We have a lot of interchangeable parts. We are still trying our different lineups and learning to get comfortable playing with each other. We dropped the first two contests against Lowell and Lawrence, but we played better in the second match than we did in the first. If we can generate a consistent offense, we can be competitive in the Greater Boston League (GBL).”
The 2025 edition of the Lady Crimson Tide will be led by the veteran senior trio of
captain Nicole Damaceno and assistant captains Amanda Verteiro and Juliette Romboli.
“All three seniors are great athletes with three years of varsity experience,” said Fineran. “Nicole is a confident, mature leader and an obvious choice for captain. The team looks up to her on and off the court. As a setter, she is in command on the floor, and she is calm and confident no matter the situation.
“Amanda and Juliette are strong, dynamic hitters. Both can rack up aces with their powerful serves; the three of them have tallied nine so far over two games,” Fineran said. “Amanda is quick in the back row, and she is not afraid to dive on the court to save a ball. Juliette is always looking to get kills from the outside hitter spot.”
The Lady Crimson Tide will be counting upon a number of other team members to make a significant contribution this season.
“Lindsey Cherichel-Paul will patrol the middle of the net, providing much-needed blocking and an improved swing,” said Fineran of the 6’-1” senior. “She can be a difference-maker for us.
“Shaeendra Hall is solid no matter where she plays, and she has an innate feel for the game. She always knows where everyone needs to be and what the best play to make is,” Fineran said. “Fellow seniors Leliani Ros-Morales and Aya Selimovic provide depth and versatility up front, along with junior Maria Jose Cardenas.
“The back row is anchored by libero Cassandra Tayag and Kiana Flores, both juniors,” said Fineran. “QiongQiong Chen and Melissa Mereiles will split time at the setter position. Both are reliable servers and passers as well. The only sophomore on varsity, Elora Philippe, is poised for a breakout season at outside hitter.”
Fineran and his crew will take on their seven GBL foes (Medford, Somerville, Malden, Chelsea, Revere, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical) twice each, with non-league contests vs. Lawrence (2), Lowell (2), and Saugus.
They were scheduled to host Chelsea this past Monday and will travel to Lynn Classical today (Wednesday). They will entertain Lynn English next Monday and trek to Somerville next Wednesday.
Everett field hockey to host Malden in home-opener next Wednesday
The Everett High field hockey team will host Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Malden in their home-opener next Wednesday (September 17) at 4:15 on the 7-Acre turf field at Rivergreen Park.
Coach Nicola Jones and her crew opened their 2025 season last Thursday at non-league foe Lowell. Although the Crimson Tide came up on the short end of a 4-0 decision, Jones was pleased with her team’s effort.
“The 4-0 final score doesn’t tell the whole story,” said Jones. “I’m incredibly proud of how our team played. Our defense, led by captain Stéphano Orleus and Justin Contreras, had a strong game, constantly challenging the opposing offense. Our goalie, Wilins Julien was a standout, making several key saves that kept us in the game.
“While the final score wasn’t in our favor, the team’s effort and hustle were undeniable. We’re taking this as a valuable learning experience and are already looking forward to a busy week with two games on the schedule,” said Jones, who is being assisted this year by assistant coaches Taylor Woodbury (who is returning for her third season) and Jenna Freni, who is joining the team for her first season.
“The team has been looking strong heading into the new season, with a great mix of new talent and returning veterans,.” Jones added. “Our preseason has focused on integrating a lot of new players, and we’re seeing rapid and significant skill development, with the team getting faster and stronger every day. The leadership from our returning players has been a key factor in this progress, creating a cohesive and motivated group.”
Jones and her crew are scheduled to be road warriors ahead of their home-opener with Malden. They played at Waltham this past Monday and will trek to Northeast Regional today (Wednesday) and to Marblehesd next Monday.
The varsity roster for the 2025 edition of the team is as follows: freshmen Kelly Doe, Kimberly Ramirez, Emely Flores, and Brittany Valle; juniors Ivey Walker, Wilins Julien, and Justin Contreras; and seniors Lindsey Sylva, Stéphano Jean baptiste Orleus, Jane’e Saintvil, Jackeline Ramos, Isadora Da Silveira, Isabella Aguirre Jimenez, Wendy Rodriguez Ayala, Anayha Sunsin, Paula Castillo, and Ildha Fevrier.
