EHS girls tennis fights fiercely in three matches
The Everett High girls tennis team faced a grueling stretch of matches last week showcasing resilience, skill, and heart. Despite falling short in two out of three contests, the team delivered standout performances.
Last Monday, the Lady Tide traveled to Somerville for a pivotal GBL showdown. The match came down to the wire — as have almost all of the team’s matches this season — decided by a third set in the final match. Unfortunately, Everett fell just short in a 2-3 decision.
Nga Ho delivered the first point for the Tide with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles. Tracy Pham continued her strong season at first singles, edging her opponent in a hard-fought match. After a 7-2 tiebreak win in the first set, Pham clinched the victory with a swift 6-2 win in the second set.
The doubles teams of Kelly St. Forte and Khadiza Nishat at first doubles, and Sophia Melo and Anne Souza at second doubles, fought valiantly in close matches, but ultimately fell short.
Jessica Du at third singles drew a crowd with her tenacity, pushing her opponent to three sets in a thrilling battle.
Coach Courtney Meninger’s crew bounced back in style on Tuesday with a dramatic Senior Day win over Saugus. The non-league match proved just as competitive, coming down to the final match once again — but this time, the Tide prevailed.
Before the match, the team celebrated its seniors: Tracy Pham, Nga Ho, Jessica Du, Kelly St. Forte, Khadiza Nishat, Sophia Melo, Anne Souza, Brenda Vilhete, Kiara Noze, Elahni Cesar, Hanna Rharioui, and Gurleen Kaur all were recognized for their contributions to the EHS girls tennis program.
.Nga Ho opened the scoring again with a 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles. Tracy Pham added another win at first singles, triumphing 8-6 in a tiebreaker before sealing the match in the second set, 6-2. Jessica Du battled through three sets at third singles, but came up just short.
With the match tied, it all came down to the first doubles team of St. Forte and Nishat. Rising to the occasion, the duo delivered a decisive 7-5, 6-2 victory, igniting celebrations and capping Senior Day with a perfect ending.
The Tide hit the road again on Wednesday to face Lynn Classical, wrapping up a challenging three-match stretch. In another nail-biter that went the distance, the team narrowly lost 2-3. Jessica Du earned a straight-set win at third singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Nga Ho came from behind to win a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
At first doubles, St. Forte and Nishat took the first set 6-2 but couldn’t hold off a comeback from their opponents, falling in three. Melo and Souza at second doubles showed tremendous heart. Down 2-4 in the second set, they vowed to push it to a third—and did just that, winning a 7-3 tiebreaker. Despite their momentum, they eventually fell 1-6 in the final set.
As the final week of the season approaches, the Lady Tide were scheduled to face Lynn English this past Monday and Medford yesterday (Tuesday) before hosting Beverly in the season finale today (Wednesday) on the courts at Rossetti Park.
“With our team’s trademark grit and determination on full display, hopes are high for a strong finish and possibly three big wins to close out the season,” said Meninger.
