EHS baseball wins two contests; hosts Charlestown Fri.
The Everett High baseball team has opened its 2025 season in successful fashion with victories of 20-9 at Mystic Valley and 11-6 at Greater Lawrence.
“It’s been a great start to the season,” said EHS head coach Malik Love. “Positive things I’ve seen so far include our chemistry, which is a lot better with nine returning players from last season, so the standard and expectations already were set. We’ve also brought nine other players, one freshman, six sophomores, and two juniors, onto the varsity.”
The Crimson Tide will host non-league opponent Charlestown this Friday in their home opener at Glendale Park at 4:00. They will travel to Greater Boston League (GBL) foe Lynn English on Monday and return home to meet GBL rival Somerville next Wednesday.
EHS Boys volleyball now 2-0 after 3-0 win
The Everett High boys volleyball team improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 victory over non-league opponent Whittier Tech last Friday.
“It was our first time playing them, so we did not know what to expect,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “They are a young program like us. The coach told me it’s their third year. They were athletic and kept sending the ball to our back row rather than setting up traditional attacks, something we had to adjust to.”
The first set was a close affair in which the Tide held a one or two point lead through most of the set, but had to rally to take the set, 26-24. Senior captain Henrique Franca had eight kills and two aces. Junior setter Noel Lopez Ardon closed the set with back-to-back aces.
Lopez Ardon opened the second set with two kills and a block, but Franca was unstoppable, putting up eight more kills and two blocks.
Senior Sidney Valentim served 10 points in a row en route to a comfortable 25-13 win.
“The third set was closer, but I liked seeing our other players step up,” said Fineran. Senior Jefferson Umana had three kills. Junior Travis Phay was 6-for-6 serving with two aces. Senior captain Bryan Soares Gomes had seven kills. Franca had three kills and a block. Lopez Ardon had a pair of kills and a pair of aces in the 25-19 win.
“We got solid contributions all match from junior Matheus Teixeira Fernandes, who played a different position in each set,” noted Fineran. “His brother Danilo, the only freshman on the varsity team, was 4-for-4 serving and set up a ton of kills. Junior captain Christian Ramirez anchored the defense and hit in all five serves. Senior Donald Vo had an ace and a block.”
Fineran and his crew have a busy week with five games vs. Greater Boston League (GBL) opponents in a 10-day span: at Chelsea this past Monday; home vs. Lynn Classical today (Wednesday) at 5:15; at Malden on Friday; at Lynn English next Monday; and home vs. Somerville next Wednesday.
“We will need to be at our best to make the kind of splash we hope to make in the GBL,” said Fineran.
EHS softball wins two contests
The Revere High softball team embarked on its 2025 season with a pair of victories over non-league opponent Cambridge last week.
The Lady Crimson Tide prevailed by a score of 22-19 in the season-opener last Wednesday at Glendale Park. After spotting Cambridge a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Alex Uga delivered a base hit in the bottom of the inning to bring in teammate Jayla Davila (who had walked) with the first run of the season for the Lady Crimson Tide.
The score remained at 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Everett exploded for six runs. The key hits in the rally, which was aided by walks and passed balls, were an RBI-base hit by Kassidy Rivera and an RBI-double by Davila.
Cambridge cut the margin to 7-6 with three runs in the fifth, but the Tide struck back with five markers in their half of the frame, all of which were scored with two outs thanks primarily to walks and passed balls. Peyton Warren came through with an RBI single and Davila stole third and scored after getting in a rundown.
Cambridge rallied in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 12-11, but Everett tacked on 10 runs (thanks again to a slew of walks and passed balls) in the bottom of the frame, the key hit being a triple by Ashley Seward.
Cambridge made things interesting in the top of the seventh before EHS pitcher Peyton Warren ended the contest with a strikeout on a change-up.
“This game was extremely cold and there was a feeling of frustration and pride,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “With it being our first game and new players in new positions, our defense was inconsistent, with errors especially in the sixth and seventh innings when Cambridge piled on runs. However, on offense we showed resilience, with players contributing key hits, and our baserunning was aggressive and effective.”
Two days later the Lady Crimson Tide trekked to Cambridge and returned home with a 21-9 triumph that was halted after six innings because of the slaughter rule.
Everett jumped out quickly with three runs in the top of the first with an RBI-triple by Seward that scored Olivia Dresser and an RBI-single by Graziella Foster being the key hits. After Cambridge got two back in the bottom of the inning, Everett struck for a pair in the second, the key blow coming on an RBI-triple by Ariana Osorio-Bonilla.
The Tide struck for four runs in the third, the big hit coming on a bases loaded double by Rivera that scored two runs. After Cambridge got two back in its third to make it 9-4, Everett put the game away with eight runs in the fourth before adding one in the fifth and three in the sixth for the 21-9 finale.
EHS pitcher Peyton Warren earned her second win of the season.
“The girls came out with their bats in this game,” said Poste-Schiavo. “We still made some errors, but we will work on these over the next week.”
The Lady Crimson Tide are scheduled to host non-league opponent Charlestown on Friday at Glendale at 4:00 and will travel to Lynn English on Monday before returning home to face Somerville next Wednesday.
Hard-fought battle for girls tennis in opener
Although the Everett High girls tennis team came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision at Saugus in their season-opening match last Monday, EHS head coach Courtney Meninger saw some encouraging signs from her team.
“Senior captain Tracy Pham carried over her success from last season at the second singles spot to first singles this season, beating her opponent 6-3, 6-2,” said Meninger. “Senior captain Nga Ho, who was a part of a very successful doubles team last season, is trying out her first solo attempt to start the season. She ended up falling short in her set, but took her opponent to a third set, 5-7, 6-4, 1-6.
“Sophomore Thy Phanhang played the first varsity match in her career, stepping up for her team after never having played singles before,” continued Meninger. “She played a great match against a tough opponent, coming up short 0-6, 0-6.
“At first doubles we had senior Jessica Du and senior Khadiza Nishat who came out victorious playing together for the first time, winning in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3,” Meninger added. “And to round out the match, we had seniors Anne Souza and Sophia Melo, who played varsity together for the first time. They fell short, 2-6, 1-6, but their match together shows a lot of promise for them this season.
“I am very excited for this season,” Meninger concluded. “We have a senior-heavy team and I’m hopeful for a fun season.”
Meninger and her Lady Crimson Tide crew are scheduled to host Medford today (Wednesday) and Lowell tomorrow (Thursday) on the courts at Rossetti Park. They will travel to Malden next Monday and return home to host Somerville next Wednesday.
Girls lacrosse opens season
The Everett High girls lacrosse team came up short by a score of 17-2 to Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Somerville last Thursday.
Senior Kayleigh McMahon scored the first Everett goal and junior captain Amanda Verteiro notched the second.
“Despite the score, the team showed strong communication and effort, leaving myself and Coach Kendrick extremely proud of them,” said EHS head coach Nicola Jones. “While the game highlighted areas for improvement, the girls played really well and have a positive outlook on this season.”
Jones and her crew are scheduled to host GBL foes Revere tomorrow (Thursday) and Medford next Tuesday. The opening draw for both matches at 7-Acre Park is set for 4:00.
