EHS boys edge Revere 59-55 in season-opener; host Somerville On Friday
Cristian Vasquez took some deep breaths and then calmly sank two clutch free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining to seal an exciting 59-55 triumph for the Everett High boys basketball team in the Crimson Tide’s 2025 season-opener at Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Revere this past Thursday.
The free throws capped a superlative performance by Vasquez, who finished with a game-high 24 points and four steals on the night. Cristian provided a spark for coach Gerry Boyce’s squad from the moment he came off the bench in the opening period, hitting a three-pointer that erased a 10-7 Revere lead and then hitting a short jumper and another trey that helped propel Everett to a 19-13 advantage at the end of the first period,
When the home-team Patriots made a run to start the second period, Vasquez drained another triple and hit a soft jumper from the wing to maintain the Tide’s edge at the half, 30-25.
Boyce’s crew came out firing after the intermission, quickly enlarging their advantage into double digits, 40-29, thanks to a nice reverse move by Geordiell Luna Morales off an offensive rebound, a hoop by Richardson Lamerique, and a pair of treys by Tyson Chunn and Vasquez. When Adam Aitmessaoud snuck away for a layup on a fast-break outlet pass and was fouled for a three-point play and Vasquez swished a mid-range jumper to increase the Everett bulge to 45-29, the Tide appeared to have the game well in hand.
However, the Patriots proved to be a pesky opponent, scoring the final six points of the period to stay within striking range, 45-36, at the third buzzer. A nice move inside off the glass by Luna Morales re-upped the Everett lead to double-figures at 47-36 to start the final eight minutes, but Revere soon went on an 12-1 tear, led by their senior all-star Ethan Day, and the Patriots brought the contest back to level at 48-48 with 4:50 to go.
The Tide’s Richardson Lamerique stopped the Revere momentum with a nice bucket inside with 3:40 to play and Aitmessaoud sank two key free throws to make it 52-48 with under three minutes to go.
Two free throws by Revere’s Day were offset by another bucket down low by Lamerique, leaving matters at 54-50 inside of two minutes remaining. Revere then turned the ball over on its next two possessions. However, two misses at the FT line by Everett and a Revere bucket left mattersat 54-52 with 15.8 on the clock.
After an intentional Revere foul, Jayden Alsaindor stepped to the charity stripe and sank both shots to make it 56-52 with 15.0 to go. After an end-to-end drive by Revere’s Day closed the gap to 56-54 with 7.6 remaining, Vasquez hit one-of-two FT shots with 6.7 on the clock. A Revere player then did likewise (after an Everett foul underneath after Vasquez’s free throw), making it 57-55 with 6.0 to go, setting the stage for Vasquez’s clinching free throws for the 59-55 finale.
As much as the contest demonstrated Everett’s offensive prowess both inside and from long-range, the Crimson Tide’s ballhawking and trapping defense resulted in numerous takeaways that prevented Revere from effectively mounting a consistent offense and proved crucial in thwarting Revere’s comeback effort down the stretch.
“The team showcased a mix of determination and teamwork in the victory against Revere,” said Boyce. “Adam Aitmessaoud and Jayden Sanchez emerged as defensive dynamos, applying relentless ball pressure that disrupted Revere’s offensive flow. Their ability to force turnovers and challenge passes energized their teammates and demonstrated their commitment to defensive fundamentals. Together, they also contributed significantly to setting up scoring opportunities, with Jayden S. providing crucial assists that reflected his understanding of teamwork.
“Rebounding played a pivotal role in keeping Everett competitive, with Henrique Pinto (who scored the Tide’s first points of the season on a nice drive on which Henrique drew a foul for a three-point play) and Geordiell Luna Morales stepping up to secure crucial boards,” Boyce continued. “Henrique’s ability to fight for both offensive and defensive rebounds helped maintain possession, while Geordiell’s hustle added depth to the team’s rebounding efforts. Their combined work on the glass highlighted the team’s tenacity and commitment to controlling the pace of the game.
“Cristian Vasquez and Richardson Lamerique led the charge on offense,” Boyce added. “Their performances were instrumental to the team’s overall success. Cristian demonstrated his scoring ability (24 points) and defensive skills (4 steals), leading the team in points and steals, while Richardson provided valuable support with his scoring (10 points) and rebounding. Their leadership on the court helped galvanize the team, encouraging younger players to push their limits and strive for improvement.
“Despite challenges, the Everett team’s spirit and teamwork serve as a foundation for future success,” Boyce added. “As they refine their skills and build on their strengths, fans can look forward to seeing this group grow and improve as the season progresses. With the right mindset and continued effort, the Everett basketball team is poised for a bright future.”
Boyce and his crew were scheduled to host the Lynn English Bulldogs, who always are among the top dogs of the GBL and with whom the Tide engaged in two epic battles last season, last night (Tuesday). They will entertain GBL foe Somerville on Friday evening at 5:00.
The Tide will compete in a holiday-week tournament on the Friday and Saturday after Christmas at King-Philip Regional. They will face Lincoln-Sudbury on Friday.and an opponent to be determined on Saturday.
EHS girls hoop hosts Lynn Classical Thursday evening
The Everett High girls basketball team will be seeking its first victory of the season when coach Riley Dunn and her crew host Greater Boston League (GBL) foe Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday) evening. The opening tip is set for 6:00.
The Lady Crimson Tide dropped their season-opener last Thursday at the EHS gym to GBL rival Revere, 42-27.
Senior Emilia Maria Babcock turned in a fine, all-around performance with a team-high 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Junior Nicole Damaceno came off the bench and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Kylee Nord saw her first varsity minutes and pulled down three boards and played solid defense.
“It was a tough loss to a strong Revere squad,” said Dunn, whose squad trailed by just five, 15-10, at the half. “Despite the outcome, it was a very promising start for our young team as they worked hard and hustled the entire game.
“Offensively, we shared the ball and got a lot of great looks,” Dunn added. “I’m excited to continue to work with this team and build that team chemistry. We’ll be looking to get our first win against an always competitive Lynn Classical team.”
After the contest with the Lady Rams, the Lady Tide are off until December 28 when they will travel for a non-league contest to Acton-Boxborough.
