EHS volleyball team opens season today

The Everett High volleyball team will open its 2024 season today (Wednesday) when long-time head coach Michael Fineran and his squad host Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Malden on the court at Everett High.

“We had a great turnout, with over 90 students registering for tryouts,” said Fineran. “We have a deep varsity team, with 16 players led by two captains: our setter Victoria Rodrigues, who has played all four years on varsity; and our libero Sonia Flores, who has been on varsity since her sophomore year.

“They are two of nine seniors on the team, including two players who are returning to volleyball this year: Ashley Seward and Clarice Alexis,” said Fineran. “Both are great athletes, and we will look to them to fill the void left by last year’s all-star middle hitters, Nicole Brandao and Kaesta Sandy.

“We will also rely on senior Tanessa Duvilaire and returning juniors Juliette Romboli and Amanda Verteiro to build off of their experience in the tournament last year,” Fineran continued. “Shaeendra Hall and Lindsey Cherichel-Paul have the potential to score a lot of points for us, too. On the defensive side, transfer Cassandra Tayag and sophomore Kiana Flores add speed and hustle to a stellar group that includes seniors Kayleigh McMahon, Murielle Campo, Trinh Dang, and Emill Nogueira.

“As always, our goal is to earn a spot in the state tournament, and to do so, we will need 10 wins,” the coach noted “It will not be easy, since every team in our league is competitive, and we have strong non-league opponents from Lowell, Lawrence, and Saugus. The experience of playing in the tournament last year should give us the confidence knowing we have what it takes, and I know that none of us felt satisfied with the 3-1 loss to Westford Academy.”

The Lady Crimson Tide will play their seven GBL rivals (Somerville Medford, Malden, Chelsea, Revere, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical) twice each and non-league foes Lawrence (twice), Lowell, and Saugus.

“Andrea Kendrick and Charlotte Mezoff return as assistant coaches,” Fineran added. “With their help, the future looks promising: we carry 27 players on two junior varsity teams, including 20 ninth graders.”

The varsity squad members are: Senior captain Victoria Rodrigues, senior captain Sonia Flores, senior Murielle Campo, senior Trinh Dang, senior Tanessa Duvilaire, senior Kayleigh McMahon, senior Clarice Alexis, senior Ashley Seward, senior Emilly Nogueira, junior Nicole Damaceno, junior Amanda Verteiro, junior Juliette Romboli, junior Lindsey Cherichel-Paul, junior Shaeendra Hall, sophomore Kristina Tayag, and sophomore Kiana Flores.

The Junior Varsity team will be led by coach Andrea Kendrick. The members of the team are: junior Zoe Massiah; sophomores Maria Jose Cardenas (captain), Melissa Mereilesm, Qiong Qiong Chen, Samantha Pacheco Lemus, Keilyn Molina Martinez, and Nayma Jean; and freshmen Elora Philippe, Tatiana Chacon Tejada, Abigail Falkowski, Jane Maharjan, Cece da Silveira, and Habiba El Sharkawi.

New season, new coach for EHS boys soccer team

The 2024 edition of the Everett High boys soccer team will feature a new head coach, former Crimson Tide star Rodney Landaverde, when the EHS squad opens its 2024 season tomorrow (Thursday) at Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Medford.

“We are excited to get the season rolling,” said Landaverde, a member of the EHS class of 2018. “Our tryouts went well. We had 150 kids participate in the week-long tryouts and had a lot of great talent competing for roster spots. We have finalized our three squads and are definitely looking to build on that and compete for a playoff spot this season.

“We have a mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen on the varsity side who are starting to work well together and understand our team principles,” Landaverde continued. “There are some returning varsity players who I am confident will lead the team with their experience.

“We have a brand-new coaching staff in assistant varsity coach Carlos Andres Ruiz, junior varsity coach Joshua Crespo, and

freshman coach Matt Lerret (who is a substitute teacher at the Keverian School). We are building a culture in Everett that promotes team-play, discipline, and exciting soccer,” Landaverde added.

The members of the varsity team are: seniors Santiago Arredondo, Jefferson Carballo, Kareem Drissi, Anthony Fontes, Luvens Hector, Bryan Ribeiro, David Severe, Antony Henriquez, Henrique Pinto, Timothy Villanueva Figueroa, Jared Valdivieso Arias, and goalkeeper Douglas Landaverde; juniors Gabriel Garcia, Lucas Rabelo-Araujo, Daniel Pinho, and goalkeeper Adailson Souza; sophomores Kevin Renderos, Efrain Ramos, and Rene Lainez; and freshmen Jonathan Hernandez and Higor Lima.

The Crimson Tide will play an 18-game schedule with 14 contests against their seven GBL rivals (Somerville, Medford, Malden, Chelsea, Revere, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical) and four matches vs. non-league opponents Lowell, Marblehead, B.C. High, and Boston International.

After tomorrow’s opener with Medford, the boys will play at Malden on Tuesday and will host archrival Chelsea next Thursday.
