GBL Halts All Sports for a Week

The Greater Boston League has ceased all interscholastic sports activities, including practices, for this week (January 3-7) because of the high prevalence of the COVID-19 virus in the GBL schools and communities.

The full announcement from the league that was issued on Monday (January 3) is as follows:

“Due to the current spike in Covid cases, and with the safety of our student-athletes in mind, the Greater Boston League unanimously has agreed to put a temporary halt on all athletic events.

“Effective immediately, there will be no athletic competitions or practices for the remainder of the week. Practices can resume on Saturday, January 8, with competitions resuming on Tuesday, January 11.

“It is the hope of league officials that this stoppage will allow our member schools to focus on policies and procedures for all student-athletes and coaches, to ensure that we can continue to provide the safest possible environment for competitions.

“Each district will create their own policy specific to spectators at competitions. The visiting team will adhere to the host team’s spectator policy.”

EHS Sports Schedule for next Week

If the Greater Boston League resumes its 2022 winter season next week, here’s the schedule for the Crimson Tide teams:

Boys Basketball:

Coach Stanley Chamblain and his squad stand at 3-0 in the Greater Boston League and at 4-2 overall after splitting its contests last week against non-league rivals Belmont (a 54-50 victory) and Brookline (69-62 loss) in the annual BBAC/Slades Bar and Grill Holiday Classic tournament last week.

The Crimson Tide are set to resume play next Tuesday when they host GBL foe Lynn English at the EHS gym at 7:00.

Girls Basketball:

Coach Riley Dunn’s squad came close, but fell short in a hard-fought 46-44 loss to former Greater Boston League rival Arlington last week. Kayley Rossi led the Lady Crimson Tide in the scoring column with 21 points. Emilia Babcock reached double figures with 12 points.

The EHS girls are scheduled to travel to Lynn English next Tuesday.

Track:

Coach Jehu Cimea’s EHS boys and girls indoor track teams will be looking to get back on track next Wednesday (January 12) in a meet with Lynn Classical.

Hockey:

The co-op team of Everett, Malden, and Revere under the direction of coach Alex Naumann are scheduled to get back on the ice next Wednesday, January 12, at Somerville.
