EHS softball team falls in state tourney

The Everett High softball team’s 2019 season came to an end with a 9-2 loss at Woburn this past Friday in a preliminary round contest of the Division 1 North Sectional of the MIAA state softball tournament.

The Lady Crimson Tide entered the tourney as the 19th seed of the 24 teams in the D-1 North with a 12-8 regular season record. Woburn was the 14th seed with a 13-7 regular season mark.

Everett got off to a nice start, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Maddy Duraes singled, followed by a double by Veronica Bento, to place runners at second and third.

Duraes scored on a ground out by Maddy Smith and Bento crossed the plate thanks to an RBI base hit by Ariana Garay.

However, the Lady Crimson Tide’s advantage proved short-lived, as Woburn responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the game back to level.

Woburn then pulled ahead with a four-run rally in the second and added extra insurance tallies in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.

Celeste Fuccillo tossed all six innings for Everett.

“We got our bats on the ball, but we hit it directly to their fielders,” said EHS head coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo. “We had our ups-and-downs this season, but I will say that I am proud of all of the girls’ accomplishments this year, both on and off the field.

“We are losing only one starter from this year’s team, so hopefully next year we can pick up where we left off this year,” added the coach.
