According to the American Autism Association, every 11 minutes a child is diagnosed with autism in the United States. To update parents in the most advanced treatments, last week the Child Behavior Institute of Miami organized the first International Conference with Updates on Autism Treatment at Harvard University. Several mothers from Everett, led by Fernanda Rocha, president of EPS Special Education Advisory Council, were in attendance. The conference was organized for bilingual parents and designed for parents, caregivers, educators, pedagogues, psychologists, and child health professionals. Rocha, who is also president of the support group of Brazilian mothers of autistic children of Massachusetts (known as the Special Gift of Being a Mother Group), led a workshop on parents’ interaction with autistic children.
