The Everett School Committee voted unanimously Monday night to schedule the public hearing on the fiscal year 2016 school budget for Tuesday, April 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with an operating budget of $70,201,385 dollars, plus an additional $3,500,000 in special education transportation and $19,466,565 in city charge backs.
The committee tabled all discussion of the budget and it accessory motions to the public hearing on April 21, which will include a presentation of the budget and year over year changes to the budget by Assistant Superintendent of Schools Charles Obremski and the members of the School Committee’s Finance Sub-Committee.
Following the public hearing on the budget, the School Committee will also conduct a public hearing on the School Choice program, before then opening a regular School Committee meeting.
Committee votes to approve request for Karate Club at EHS
The Everett School Committee unanimously approved a request by teacher Jodi Lava on Monday night to establish a Karate program at Everett High School.
According to Lava, the request came from the Malden YMCA, which serves Everett residents and has an active and growing Karate program. The Y program has become so successful, in fact, that they have outgrown their facilities and ability to offer classes.
They approached Everett High School with the idea of training interested Everett High School students during an eight-week session, which could then seed a program to have those youth teach younger children through the Y and the School Department over the summer.
The new EHS Karate classes will be taught on Friday night’s from 6 to 8 p.m. at the High School. Information on how to register will be made available through the school.
