Mayor Carlo DeMaria and James Errickson, Director of the Department of Planning and Development, recently announced that full design for Everett’s portion of the Northern Strand Community Trail – also known as Bike to the Sea – has been completed. The trail, which is just under a mile long, runs along the former MBTA rail from West and Wellington Streets to Wyllis Ave on the Malden line. The design was completed by FST of Burlington, MA with guidance from Brown, Richardson, and Rowe and includes a fully paved pathway, a new entrance at West and Wellington Streets, and new landscaping and benches. The City is also still working with abutters, such as the Madeline English School and Britney Place Condominiums, to incorporate more entrances along the trail.
The Department of Planning and Development were able to secure state grant funds through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA), which covered the entire cost of the design and will also contribute $120, 000 toward construction costs. Construction costs and budget are currently being finalized. Once complete, the project funds can be allocated, and then sent out to bid.
