The Everett High baseball team will open its 2012 season Tuesday when the Crimson Tide travel to No. Shore Tech for a non league contest.
Although Coach Joe Marchese’s squad lost a number of key players to graduation who played a pivotal role in leading the Crimson Tide to a sterling 17-3 record in 2011 that included a GBL title and a win in the state tournament, Marchese does not view the upcoming campaign as a rebuilding year.
“We have a solid nucleus of returning starters and a group of newcomers whom we think are ready to step in to make a big contribution,” said the coach.
The Crimson Tide will be led by the senior captaincy triumvirate of catcher Chris McCarthy, shortstop Matt Cafarella, and pitcher/first baseman Chris DiNapoli. The other seniors are outfielders Michael Yebba, infielder/pitcher Ted Feble, and outfielder John DiBiaso.
Junior Reardan Sweeney figures to man the bag at first base when DiNapoli is on the mound; junior Mac Singleton will hold down second base; and junior Zerif Pijazetovic will handle the chores at the hot corner when he is not pitching.
Junior Shawn Doyle will add depth in the outfield and junior Matt Pothier will be counted upon to provide significant innings in the pitching department. Other spots on the roster are still to be determined.
The Tide have participated in a number of scrimmages against the likes of Chelsea, Wakefield, Central Catholic, and Triton Regional thus far this spring and have a few more on tap before the season opener.
“We’ve played well overall and we got a chance to get a good look at everybody,” said Marchese, who predicted that the GBL will be a well-balanced league this season. “We’re hopeful that we’ll have a good year.”
