The only EHS Basketball Team to ever win the Tech Tourney when the Tech Tourney was the place where championships were made was the 1959 team, which was honored last week.
After winning the Tourney, this talented team got into the New England Tournament and went to the final game – which they lost 66-61 versus Hill House, a Connecticut team.
Nearly all the members of the basketball team went on to the American Legion Baseball National Championship in Arizona. They lost in the finals. But these guys were champions.
All the team members except for three who have passed away got together last week at a dinner held for them and their families and the cheer leaders and their families from 1959 before the Cambridge game.
At half-time they received their plaques.
The outpouring of local interest and response was extraordinary.
Many former classmates attended.
It was a wonderful time that caused everyone who attended to feel extremely proud that they would always be a part of this great city and social experience.
This event would not have taken place were it not for the hard work and follow-through, and the general great care given to detail that Gina Grande brings to her work for the Everett School Department.
Thank you, Gina.
