Madeline Mendez-Rivera

Of East Boston, formerly of Chelsea

Madeline Mendez-Rivera of East Boston, formerly of Chelsea, died unexpectedly in her home on January 25.

She was 59 years old.

Born in Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Fernando and Bonafacia Mendez. She attended schools in Puerto Rico and spent 40 years living in Chelsea before relocating to East Boston six years ago. A loving wife and mother, she spent her life caring for her family.

She was the beloved wife of 38 years of Ignacio Rivera of Everett; devoted mother of Abraham Rivera of Philadelphia and Ignacio Rivera of Revere.  She is also survived by three brothers in Puerto Rico. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers.

Domenic ‘Tommy’ Cataldo

Domenic J. “Tommy” Cataldo of Everett died on February 2.

A US Army veteran, he was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Cataldo; dear brother of Joseph A. Cataldo of Chelsea, Margaret Avakian and Mary Cataldo of Everett and the late Angelo J. and Amoreso Cataldo; loving uncle of Ellen Cataldo of Chelsea and several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Rita Alongi

Former Everett Beauty Shop Owner

Eleanor Rita (Carangelo) Alongi of Saco, Maine died peacefully in the presence of her loving family on January 29. She was 93 years old.

She was one of 13 children born to Ferdinand and Philomena Carangelo in Boston’s North End on August 28, 1917. She married the late Joseph Aiello, resided in Revere for many years and owned and operated a beauty salon in Everett. After retirement, she married Sebastian Alongi and lived in York Beach, ME and Ft. Myers, FL.

She is survived by three children and a step-daughter: Lawrence Aiello and his wife, Patricia, of Andover, Frederic Aiello and his wife, Margaret, of Turner, ME; Jo-Ann Pack and her husband, Frank, of Kennebunk, ME; and Lucille Alongi and her husband, Rudy, of Gardena, CA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held in the spring and announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco. Carmella ‘Mella’ Creilson

Carmella A. “Mella” Creilson of Everett died at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on January 30.  She was 86 years old.

Born and raised the North End of Boston, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Clementine (Repucci) Rizzo. As a young child, her family moved to Everett and she had been a lifelong resident ever since. She attended Everett High School and after graduation, she attended the Chandler School in Boston. She worked outside the home in the US Naval Hospital throughout the 1940s and 1950s. She also spent time working in Laverde’s Market on the M.I.T. Campus on a part time basis for 10 years until her full retirement in 2005.

“Mella” enjoyed shopping and traveling with a circle of friends. A proud Bostonian, she loved exposing new generations to Boston culture.

She was the beloved wife of 64 years of Lawrence C. Creilson of Everett; devoted mother of Larry Creilson Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Snellville, Georgia, Linda McNamara and her husband, John, of Ireland and Susan Dascoli and her husband, Frank, of Saugus; dear sister of Joseph Rizzo and the late Lena Bonito; cherished grandmother of Andrea Connolly and her husband, Gareth, Michael Dascoli, Gina Dascoli, Alexander Creilson and Nicholas Dascoli; adored great grandmother of Charlotte and Isabelle Connolly.

Domenic Squadrito of Malden died on February 1.

Margaret E.(Conley) Almon of Everett died on January 31. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Almon was an avid bowler, a member of Morning Glories Bowling League and St. Therese Ladies Sodality.

The beloved wife of the late Ignatius G. Almon, she was the loving mother of Mary Sordillo of Melrose, Richard Almon of Andover, Barbara Ciano of Melrose, Robert Almon of Amesbury, Jacqueline Leavitt of Newburyport, and the late Gordon and Stephen Almon. She is also survived by eight cherished grandchildren.

Jose J. Santos Jr. of Arroyo, Puerto Rico, formerly of Chelsea, died unexpectedly at home on January 16.

Born in Malden, he was the beloved son of the late Jose Santos Sr. and Amelia (Cordero) Santos; beloved brother of Brena Cotto of Webster, Tommy Santos of Revere, Avein Santos of Spencer, Miguel Santos of Everett, Fredy Santos of Spencer, Milaros (Santos) Diaz of Chelsea, Minerba Santos Cordero and the beloved uncle of many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Service were held in Puerto Rico. He will be sadly missed.

James Suozzo

Self Employed Marketing Entrepreneur

James R. Suozzo of East Boston died January 26 at his home surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 53 years old.

Born in Winthrop on June 1, 1957, the son of the late Wilfred Suozzo and Joyce E. Sullivan, he attended Boston public schools and Saugus High School. For many years, Mr. Suozzo was a self employed marketing entrepreneur, involved in the pharmaceutical industry.

He leaves a daughter, Terese Suozzo Kacandes and her husband, Christopher, of Boxford and a son, James R. Suozzo Jr, of Everett; two granddaughters, Isabella and Lilianna Kacandes; his aunts and uncle, Dorothy DeGruttola, of Saugus, Verna Sullivan and James Sullivan and his wife, Ruth, of East Boston, and Jesse Suozzo, of Stoneham.

She was the beloved wife of the late Alexander L. Monteforte; devoted mother of Margaret Wohrle and her husband, Hans, of Stoneham, Lucille Collings of Malden, Leah Miller and her husband, Stephen, of Brentwood, NH, Louis Monteforte and his wife, Janice, of Everett and the late Alexis M. Giangrande; loving grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; loving sister of Mary Tzannos and her husband, Nicholas, of Bourne, Frances Bent and her husband, Arthur, of Wilmington, Lucille Winship of Plymouth, William Balliro and his wife, Linda, of Revere, Anthony Balliro of Boston’s North End and Bruno Balliro and his wife, Dee, of Florida.

June (Shannon) Morse of Everett died on February 5.

The daughter of the late James and Margaret, she was the sister of the late Marguerite Shannon and James E. Shannon and is survived by two nieces, Tara Welsh and Elizabeth Medeiros, one nephew, Michael Shannon and seven grandnieces and grandnephews.

Carmella A. “Melinda” (Magro) Quartarone of Everett died on February 6.

She was the beloved wife of the late Frank C. Quartarone; dear and devoted mother of Linda Marie Baniewicz and her husband, Richard of Everett and Ronald Quartarone and his wife, Gail of Medway; sister of Gloria LaSala and her husband, Tony of Everett and John Magro; loving grandmother of Charles and Joseph Quartarone.
