The Everett High football team saw its hopes for a state championship fall short to Xaverian High School, 29-0, in the Division 1 Super Bowl Saturday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
With most Everett fans heeding the forecast for snow and electing to stay home and watch the game on television, the Tide were unable to generate much offense against an experienced Xaverian team that came into the game with an undefeated record.
The weather – a cold, wet snow eventually covered the field while a swirling wind blew in to the stadium – hampered Everett’s usually potent offense and stymied Tide quarterback Jonathan DiBiaso and his top receiver, Matt Costello.
Everett also committed such uncharacteristic turnovers, but again the weather had a lot to do with mishandling the football, which even occurred on usually routine kickoff returns.
And the Hawks pounced on Everett’s miscues, turning them into points. Xaverian quarterback Alex Phelan and running back Joe Colton led the Hawks’ offense to 22 first-half points.
Xaverian added a touchdown in the third quarter and Everett was unable to mount a comeback in the second half.
Everett, champion of the Greater Boston League champion, finished its season with an 8-3 record. Xaverian finishes 13-0 and will likely be ranked No. 1 in the state in the two Boston newspaper polls.
With several players returning to coach John DiBiaso’s team, Everett could be back for another run at a state championship in 2010.

The only thing more pathetic than the effort of this team was the support of our town. There was less than 200 people there. I'm sure our boys came out and saw Xaverian's side packed and ours completely empty had a lot to do with the poor effort on the field. We call ourselves the greatest football city and there was zero evidence of it Saturday. We owe these kids an apology for abandoning them during the game of their lives. Gloucester had 2,000 people at their game so there's really no excuse other than when the time came to support these kids we stayed home on the couch.
