S.T.E.A.M. City Corp. is proud to announce that it has awarded a special scholarship of $1800 to Everett student Mackenzie Gomez for her internship at Pathway Initiative. S.T.E.A.M. City worked with the Eliot Family Resource Center in Everett and Pathway to place Gomez into the intensive program at Tufts Medical Center which puts High School students in real world medical training.
“Eleanor Gayhart (director of the Eliot FRC) was instrumental in making our collaboration with Pathway Initiative come together, since we had a very short time frame to place a student in the program.” S.T.E.A.M. City interim director Sioux Gerow said. “She was able to identify MacKenzie and put her in touch with the Pathway Initiative for evaluation and they enrolled her right away.”
According to Mackenzie. “The Pathway Initiative was an amazing opportunity that allowed me to step outside of the classroom and experience what working in STEM and healthcare research can actually look like. Throughout the program, I learned how to research real scientific topics, analyze information, work with others, and turn complicated research into something people can understand. My project focused on BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and how they can affect breast cancer risk, treatment, and fertility, which allowed me to explore a topic that has a real impact on people’s lives. I also gained confidence in public speaking by presenting my research and answering questions about my findings. Beyond the research itself, the program helped me strengthen my communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Pathway showed me that STEM is not just about science in a textbook—it is about asking important questions, finding answers, and using what you learn to make a difference.”
As a follow-up to this success, S.T.E.A.M. City intends to maintain an annual Scholarship toward The Pathway Initiative program in support of outstanding students in Everett who are interested in Medicine.
