On Saturday, September 19, the City of Everett partnered with the Eliot Family Resource Center (EFRC) to host the City’s first Sensory-Friendly Touch-A-Truck event at the Everett Recreation Center.
Families enjoyed sensory-friendly games and activities while children had the opportunity to get an up-close look at fire trucks, police cruisers and other first responder vehicles.
The event offered a quieter, more accessible version of a traditional Touch-A-Truck for children and adults who may be sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights or large crowds.
“It was great to see so many kids and families come out for Everett’s first sensory-friendly Touch-A-Truck,” said Mayor Robert J. Van Campen. “Everett is home to people with different needs and experiences, and it’s important that the events and programs we offer reflect that. Every family should have opportunities to participate, feel comfortable and enjoy being part of our community.”
Acting Director of Youth Development and Enrichment Roberto Velasquez said the event was an important step toward offering more inclusive programming for Everett families.
“It was amazing to see kids and families enjoying a Touch-A-Truck experience designed to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable,” said Velasquez. “We’re excited to build on this event and continue finding ways to make our programs more accessible to families across Everett.”
The City of Everett was proud to partner with EFRC, Everett Public Schools, the Everett Fire Department, the Everett Police Department and other community partners to create a welcoming environment where children could explore, learn and have fun at their own pace.
