The Everett High baseball team opened its 2025 season on a high note with a 20-8 victory over non-league opponent Mystic Valley this past Friday at the Malden Catholic field.
Coach Malik Love and his Crimson Tide crew are scheduled to travel to non-league foe Greater Lawrence tomorrow (Thursday) and to Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Chelsea next Monday and Lynn Classical next Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide will face all seven of their GBL foes (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Chelsea, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) twice each and meet non-league opponents Mystic Valley, Greater Lawrence (2), Charlestown (2), and Belmont to complete their 20-game schedule.
EHS softball team seeks to return to tourney, win GBL title
The Everett High girls softball team is scheduled to open its 2025 season today (Wednesday) when veteran coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo and her crew take on non-league opponent Cambridge at 4:30 at Glendale Park.
The Lady Crimson Tide are coming off a banner 2024 campaign in which they compiled a sterling overall record of 18-3 to win a share of the Greater Boston League title and qualify for the post-season MIAA state tournament (where they dropped a first-round contest to Belmont).
The 2025 edition of the Lady Crimson Tide saw 25 girls try out for the team, with 14 making varsity and 11 on the JV team. The assistant coaches with Post-Schiavo this season will be Jenn Nigro on the varsity and the duo of Danielle Nadeau and Bridgit Cifuni for the JV squad.
“After just one week, the team has developed good chemistry, with players excelling in fielding, throwing, and hitting mechanics,” said Poste-Schiavo. “Strong pitching and overall improvement in hitting and defense are also expected to be strengths this season.
“In terms of areas for improvement, we need to focus on consistency in hitting throughout the lineup, especially in terms of pitch recognition, timing, and contact,” Poste-Schiavo continued. “There’s also an emphasis on improving swing mechanics and our mental approach at the plate. Additionally, players in new positions are working on improving their defensive skills.
“The team has seen some players who may not have had the spotlight last season stepping up and improving in key areas such as hitting, defense, and pitching,” added Poste-Schiavo, who is entering her 27th season at the helm of the EHS softball program in which she has compiled a Coaches Hall of Fame resume of 348 wins and 195 losses. “Players in new positions or roles have also exceeded expectations, showcasing their adaptability and skill.”
Members of the varsity squad are: Freshman Arianna Osorio-Bonilla; sophomores Olivia Dresser, Mia Allen, and Graziella Foster; junior Juliette Romboli; and seniors Talyciah Arrington, Jayla Davila, Kassidy Rivera, Mia Oliva, Emma Salvi, Ashley Seward, Alexa Uga, Luiza Velev, and Peyton Warren.
Captains have not been selected yet, giving the coaches the opportunity to observe which seniors naturally step up to lead during the season.
“Our goal this year is to be more consistent with hitting and supporting our pitching,” said Poste-Schiavo. “We would like to win the league and move further into the playoffs.”
Poste-Schiavo and her crew will face all seven of their GBL foes (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Chelsea, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) twice each and meet non-league rivals Cambridge (2), Whittier, Lowell (2), and Swampscott to round out their 20-game schedule.
After today’s opener, the Lady Crimson Tide will travel to Cambridge on Friday. They will return home to host GBL foes Chelsea next Monday and Lynn Classical next Wednesday. The opening pitch for both of those contests at Glendale is 4:00.
Boys volleyball opens with win
The Everett High boys volleyball team opened its 2025 season on a winning note with a 3-1 victory over the Pioneer Charter School of Science this past Friday in the EHS gym.
EHS senior captain Henrique Franca set the tone in the opening set with a string of serves to build an 8-1 Crimson Tide lead. Lopez Ardon later had a run of his own to break open a 13-10 game into a 21-10 lead. Franca added five kills, Soares Gomes had four kills and a block in the 25-16 win.
Franca had four more kills in set two, and Queiroz had three, but the Tide did not serve as well in that set, and came up short, 25-20, to leave the match deadlocked at 1-1.
“It was not a surprise,” said EHS head coach Michael Fineran. “Pioneer plays us tough every time, and we’ve seen their current seniors get stronger these past few years, so we knew we’d be in for a battle.”
The third set proved tight throughout, but Ramirez was 6-for-6 serving, Umana had a kill and a block, and Franca served the last two points in the game, including an ace, to end it, 25-19. The Tide then put the game away in the fourth set. Aces from Sidney Valentim, Franca, Jefferson Umana, and Bryan Soares Gomes helped build a 14-9 lead, and Soares Gomes tallied five kills en route to a 25-16 win to end the match.
“We are hoping to have a successful season, which for us will mean getting back to the state tournament for the second year in a row,” said Fineran. “We have the talent and experience to do it, but of course it won’t be easy. We have a tough non-league schedule, with Arlington and Lowell looming at the end of the season.
“The talent in the Greater Boston League (GBL) is strong as well. Malden and Revere expect to be at the top of the league again,” Fineran continued. “Our matches against Lynn Classical, Somerville, and Chelsea always seem to go five sets. We’ve seen over the past few years that anyone can beat us, but I hope we’ve learned our lessons.
“This group is a special one, because the program started when this year’s seniors were freshmen,” said Fineran. “Captain and two-time GBL All Star Henrique Franca started every game in that first season when we went 8-2. He emerged in his sophomore season as one of the best hitters in the league and we will lean on him heavily this year.
“Jefferson Umana, captain Bryan Soares Gomes, and Sidney Valentim are also in their fourth year with us. Bryan just loves volleyball, and it’s almost like having another coach on the team,” Fineran continued. “He has developed into a formidable outside hitter as well. Jefferson Umana has power outside too, but we will often put him in the middle where he can be a disruptive blocker. Sidney is a consistent setter and his game has shown the most growth from the first time he touched a volleyball.
“Three other seniors will be key contributors and all of them joined the program in their sophomore year,” the coach said. “Captain Matheus Queiroz, Donald Vo, and Caleb Jackson bring power and versatility to our middle and right side attack. Junior captain Christian Ramirez and junior Travis Phay will be our defensive specialists (liberos). Noel Lopez Ardon is the returning varsity setter. Victor Rosa and Matheus Fernandes can play anywhere on the court, and freshman Danilo Fernandes is a setter who has already built chemistry with our hitters. We won’t have the height advantage in many matches, but we can score from either side no matter who gets the nod, and our defense should keep games close.
“We have four practices before our next game,” Fineran added. “We know we have things to work on, but we also know that if we play up to our potential, we can get back to where we want to be — playing meaningful games in late May and early June.”
The Crimson Tide will face their seven GBL opponents (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Chelsea, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) twice each and meet non-league rivals Pioneer Charter (2), Whittier, Arlington, and Lowell to comprise their 19-match season.
Fineran and his crew are scheduled to travel to Whittier Tech this Friday. They will make the short trek across the Parkway to Chelsea on Monday and entertain Lynn Classical next Wednesday.
EHS track teams open season Tuesday
The Everett High boys and girls outdoor track and field teams will open their 2025 season next Tuesday with a tri-meet at Chelsea against Greater Boston League opponents Chelsea and Medford.
Coach Jehu Cimea and his troops will face their seven GBL foes (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Chelsea, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) once each in dual-meet and tri-meet formats and then will compete in the All-GBL Meet at the end of the season. Members of the team also will compete in the various state and invitational meets throughout the spring.
EHS tennis teams get into the swing
The Everett High girls and boys tennis teams are set to open their 2025 seasons this week.
Coach Courtney Meninger’s Lady Crimson Tide squad were scheduled to travel to non-league opponent Saugus yesterday (Tuesday) and will play at Greater Boston League foe Revere tomorrow (Thursday). They will host GBL rival Medford next Wednesday on the courts at Rossetti Park.
Coach Greg Bluestein and the EHS boys open their 2025 campaign tomorrow (Thursday) vs. Revere at Rossetti and will travel to Medford next Wednesday.
EHS girls lacrosse to host Somerville in season-opener
The Everett High girls lacrosse team will open its season tomorrow (Thursday) with a contest against Somerville on the turf field at 7-Acre Park. The opening draw is set for 4:00.
“This year, we have a dedicated group of athletes, allowing us to field a varsity team and a developing junior varsity squad,” said head coach Nicola Jones. “We’re excited to have a JV game scheduled, with hopes of adding more throughout the season.
“This is my first year as head coach and I’m fortunate to have assistant coach Andrea Kendrick returning for her second year working alongside me,” Jones said. “Our leadership is strong, with senior captains Victoria Rodrigues and Trinh Dang, and junior captain Amanda Verteiro, all doing an exceptional job guiding the team.
“Our focus since the start of the season has been on building a strong foundation through rigorous conditioning and continuous skill development. Coach Kendrick and I are both enthusiastic about the season and look forward to witnessing the girls’ continued growth, both as athletes and individuals. We are committed to fostering a positive and supportive environment where they can thrive,” Jones added.
After tomorrow’s opener with Somerville, the Lady Crimson Tide will travel to Malden next Tuesday.
