Vote on use of old EHS building postponed until Nov. 12 meeting

The City Council agreed with City Council President Robert Van Campen to postpone action on his two motions concerning the use of the former Everett High School building for expanded school purposes until the Nov. 12 meeting. In the first of two motions/resolutions that he had placed on the agenda at Monday’s council meeting, Van Campen requested the Mayor Carlo DeMaria Administration to provide the city’s lease, rental, and operating agreements for the Broadway Boxing Club and the Eliot Family Resource Center, two organizations that are currently housed in the old EHS building.

In the second motion, Van Campen sought an update on the ongoing efforts for the potential use of the building [for the seventh-and-eighth-grade academy proposed by Supt. of Schools Bill Hart], along with an update on the reuse and redevelopment of the former Pope John property.

“I am just seeing emails providing us with this information – I haven’t even had a chance to read the letter,” Van Campen told his colleagues. Van Campen added, “It really would be nice to get information before the night of our meeting, or an hour before our meeting, or 15 minutes before our meeting, so that the public, when they see the agenda package posted on the website, can actually see the communication we’re receiving and the information we’re receiving from the Administration.” Ward 2 Councilor Stephanie Martins, taking over the council president’s role during the matter, called for a voice vote on Van Campen’s request for a postponement and it was approved unanimously.
