Desrameaux Wins GBL Shotput Title; Sets New EHS mark
Senior Darrynn Desrameaux capped a tremendous Greater Boston League (GBL) indoor track and field season with a victory in the shot-put at last Friday’s GBL Meet, which featured athletes from all eight of the GBL schools, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
Darrynn’s throw of 34’-11.25” easily outdistanced her closest competitor, Chelsea’s Kiara Ramirez, whose top toss was 31’-1.5”, a difference of almost four feet. In addition, her throw was a new school record (which Darrynn herself holds) and now ranks her eighth in Division 2 and 25th overall in the state.
Desrameaux paced the Lady Crimson Tide to a dominating performance in the shot-put event. Teammate and fellow senior Layla Betancur-Cardona (who has been battling Desrameaux for the school record throughout the season) finished in third place in the shot with a throw of 29’-8.5” and senior teammate Nicole Brandao finished fifth in the shot with a toss of 27’-5.75”.
For the versatile Brandao, the fifth-place medal in the shot-put gave her two medals on the day, the other coming thanks to her fourth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 10.39.
Other point-scorers for coach Jehu Cimea’s Lady Crimson Tide squad were:
— Senior Suzanne Maharjan, who won a sixth-place medal in the 2-mile run with a time of 15:41.22;
— Senior Nicole Brandao, who took home a fourth place medal in the 55 meter hurdles with a clocking of 10.39;
— The 4 x 200 relay quartet of junior Angelina Papa, junior Zyelle Cannon-Mathis, sophomore Isabella Pimenta, and junior Yelsa Garcia, who earned a fourth-place medal with their time of 1:57.71;
— The 4 x 800 relay foursome of junior Milena Antiono, senior Nicole Fonseca, senior Suzanne Maharjan, and senior Tiffany Escobar, who took fifth place with a clocking of 12:52.84.
Eveillard Shines for EHS Boys at GBL Meet
The Everett High boys indoor track and field team turned in a strong performance at last Friday’s Greater Boston League (GBL) Meet that was held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston.
Sophomore speedster Kayshaun Eveillard brought home three medals, two in individual events and a third in a relay. Kayshaun took second place in the 300 meter dash with a time of 36.82 and grabbed a third-place medal in the 55 meter dash with a sprint of 6.81 seconds. In addition, Eveillard anchored the Tide’s 4 x 200 relay team to a third-place finish, thus giving him his third medal of the day and personally tallying a team-high 15.5 points for the Crimson Tide column on the scoresheet.
Senior Khang Nguyen scored 9.5 points for Everett with his second-place performance in the long jump with a flight of 19’-3.25.” Khang also earned a second medal as a member of the Tide’s 4 x 200 relay team that finished in third place.
Senior Nischal Tamang scored four points for the Everett side of the scoresheet with his fourth-place performance in the 1000 meter run with a clocking of 2:59.27.
Seniors Dawens Germain and Donald Michel tied for third place in the high jump with a leap of 5’-6”. Michel earned another individual medal with his sixth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.63.
Germain just missed out on another individual medal in the 600. His seventh-place clocking of 1:33.26 was just 0.46 of a second behind the sixth-place time. However, Dawens earned a second medal by anchoring the 4 x 400 relay team to a fifth-place finish.
Jalen Jones earned two medals, grabbing a sixth-place medallion in the long jump and running the opening leg for the Tide’s 4 x 200 relay team that finished in third place.
Senior Jeremiah Jean-Louis earned a medal in the 55 meter event with his sixth-place finish in a dash of 6.99.
Sophomore Anthony Whitlow turned in a strong effort in the 2-mile run, finishing in eighth place in a time of 11:58.75, which was the second-fastest clocking among the sophomores in the field.
The Everett 4 x 200 relay quartet of senior Jalen Jones, senior Matthew LaMonica, senior Khang Nguyen, and sophomore Kayshaun Eveiilard took third place with a clocking of 1:36.85.
The Tide’s 4 x 400 squad of sophomore Adrien Reyes, junior JN Baptiste Orleus, senior Nischal Tamang, and senior Dawens Germain also medaled, coming across in fifth place.
Everett’s 4 x 800 all-sophomore foursome of Jeremy Whitlow, Dante Gell, Tyre Lule, and Lucas Nunez brought home a sixth-place medal and scored a point for the Everett cause.
The Tide finished the day with 46 points, which placed coach Jehu Cimea’s crew in fourth place among the eight GBL schools that competed at the meet.
EHS Girls Hoop Wins on Senior Night
The Everett High girls basketball team celebrated Senior Night in appropriate fashion with an exciting 39-37 victory over Greater Boston League rival Somerville last Tuesday.
Emilia Maria Babcock led all scorers with 21 points in a solid two-way effort in which Emilia made six steals and snared four rebounds.
Malaica Guillaume also turned in a solid contribution at both ends of the floor with five boards, four assists, and four steals.
“All team members contributed in some way or form to get a tough and gritty win against Somerville,” said EHS head coach Riley Dunn.
Two nights later, the Lady Crimson Tide came up on the short end of a 51-30 decision at Revere, which is tied for first place in the “Revere is a very tough team,” noted Dunn. “Our defensive effort was there, but we just couldn’t seem to connect on the offensive end. The girls hustled until the very end and never gave up. We will bounce back and learn from this game. “
Emilia Maria Babcock once again was the top scorer with 12 points and made three steals. Malaica Guillaume hit for double figures with 11 points and pulled down four rebounds and had two steals.
Sonia Constanza Flores, Manal Bouhou, Taisha Alexandre, and Casey Martinez all had two steals in the Tide’s tough defensive effort.
Dunn and her crew will wrap up their GBL season at home with Medford tomorrow (Thursday). at 6:00. They will entertain non-league opponent Lawrence next Monday at 6:30 and then will trek to non-league foe Lowell next Thursday.
EHS Boys Hoop Clinches Tourney Spot; Hosts Chelsea This Sat.
The Everett High boys basketball team will host Greater Boston League rival Chelsea this Saturday evening in the EHS gym. The opening tip is set for 5:30. The contest is a make-up game of their encounter that was postponed in mid-January because of the weather.
The Crimson Tide presently stand in second place in the GBL with a 9-2 record (10-4 overall), trailing only Lynn English, which has only one loss in the league (that coming to Everett).
The Everett boys clinched a berth in the post-season Division 1 state tournament this past week with wins over Somerville and Revere, assuring the Tide of the .500 record that is needed to punch a ticket for a Journey to the Tourney.
Everett was scheduled to meet Somerville last night (Tuesday) and will travel to Medford tomorrow (Thursday) evening. They will entertain non-league opponent East Boston next Tuesday starting at 7:00.
