The news that long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad successfully had crossed the Straits of Florida from Cuba to Key West this past weekend brought a degree of wonder and joy to all who learned of her accomplishment.
First and foremost, this had been Ms. Nyad’s life-long goal after four previously-unsuccessful efforts stretching over a span of almost 40 years. Her accomplishment this weekend is a testament to the idea that perseverance is a virtue.
Moreover, no doubt we were not alone in being a bit taken aback at the news that Ms. Nyad is 64 years of age. For the tens of millions of aging Baby Boomers, her feat speaks volumes for what can be achieved even in one’s supposedly golden years.
Amidst all of the negative news in the world today, Diana Nyad’s 110 mile swim across shark-infested waters was a true splash of joy. We thoroughly enjoyed reading of her exploits and we salute her for this tremendous achievement.
